HOW NOW, BROWN COW?

Year of the Bull? Hardly. And as for this being the Year of the Ox, it’s more

likely to be remembered as the Year of the Axe. The reality is that most of

2009 will be a Cow of a year, by name and by nature.

A few months back, when markets were crashing faster than Niagara Falls, one

of our analysts remarked, not entirely in jest, that not only had investors given up on

fundamentals, they’d even come to despair of the arcane waverings of chartists. It

had reached the point, the analyst reckoned, where investors were pretty much only

taking calls from their feng shui advisors. What better time, then, to breathe the vital

lifeforce back into our much-missed and disconcertingly popular CLSA Feng Shui

Index, which over the years has been the bane of sensible analysts and investors by

correctly calling the market uncannily often on the basis of not much more than wind,

water, a bunch of fanciful farmyard animals and frequent recourse to spirits.

This year, the divining duties of our venerated Wicked Witch of the East fall to

Vonnie Chan, ethereally assisted by her market-mystic brace of Wand-bearers, Alex

Cheuk and George Chan. So, what has 2009 got in store for us? Well, despite it

shaping up as a Cow of a year, the index shows there’s no cause for udder despair.

Admittedly, we’ll all have to plough hard for our pennies during this Year of the Brown

Cow (‘brown’ because of the prevailing earth element and ‘cow’, rather than bull or

ox, because of the yin, or female, infl uence this cycle). However, there’ll be some

terrifi c money-making opportunities for the sage and the swift.

How to make the most of it? Obviously, this guide is a great place to start. Over the

following pages, we fi rst explain the background to the index and how to read it, then

give you a month-by-month guide to the year ahead, plus ready-reckoners for every

birth sign of the Chinese zodiac (including forecasts for a few famous faces), and tips

on how to sort out your home and offi ce to make sure the luck fl ows in. And, unlike

some forecasters, we deliver specifi c predictions for the year ahead.

We hope you enjoy our feng shui guide, bearing in

mind as always that it’s offered with our tongues

fi rmly in our cheeks. All the best for 2009 . . . and

may the old Brown Cow be with you!

WHAT’S THE STORY?

The CLSA Feng Shui Index started quietly enough as a

Chinese New Year card to clients back in 1992, the Year

of the Water Monkey. It was little more than a distilla-

tion of forecasts from a number of Hong Kong’s more

notable feng shui masters, along with the views

of our own consultant. To fl esh it out, we plot-

ted month-by-month forecasts for the Hang Seng,

according to whether the investment

omens were good, bad or indifferent.

The result was a contrarian-looking chart that was easy

to laugh off. But six months down the track, our Feng Shui

Index was proving to be remarkably accurate. And by

year’s end, it had managed to correctly call all seven

major turning points of the Hang Seng - unlike most

brokers and investors.

Over the years, the index hasn’t always proved

to be quite so prescient, but it’s got things right often

enough (probably far more often than it ought) to

make hard-working analysts despair.

Reading the index is relatively simple. We adopt

Li Chun, 4 February, as the traditional Spring start

to the year (and the month of the Fire

Tiger), regardless of when the

Chinese New Year is celebrated.

We use a fortune scale from +5

to -5 to indicate the relative size of

the Hang Seng’s likely movement

each month.

The overall pattern of the CLSA

Feng Shui Index is also important.

In technical terminology, the

year will open with a “pair of

horns”, which takes us through

to about the end of May (watch your step that

month). Our indications are that the index will then bot-

tom out into an “udder” running well into September,

before climbing gradually but determinedly into a

“cow’s gambol” for a strong fi nish to the year.

5

As well, we’ve marked the solstices and equi-

noxes as these indicate signifi cant changes of for-

tune that are often accompanied by periods of vola-

tility. The best advice at these times is to keep your

wits about you. There’s money to be made if you’ve

got your eyes open.

As well as the index itself, this guide provides

all manner of forecasts and advice to help you get

the luck fl owing in the right direction. According

to our prognostications, this Year of the Brown

Cow has got plenty going for it. And with

our guide in hand, you should be able to

milk it for all its worth.

PREDICTIONS ALL THE THRILLS AND SPILLS . . .

4 FEBRUARY - 4 MARCH

Sleeping tigers guard each of this year’s

bad-energy spots - and in terms of

money there are at least four to watch

out for. However, February’s Fire Tiger

is an animal of a very different stripe.

This frisky fellow promises to put a bit

of bite back in the market after the tur-

moil that marked the tail end of 2008’s

Year of the Dirty Rat. The Fire Tiger’s

golden glow may suggest a strategic

investment for those with a longer

time horizon. Take this time early in

the year to re-energise yourself, ready

for some potentially tough months

ahead. Watch your health - and go

easy on the fi rewater.

FEBRUARY FIRE TIGER MARCH FIRE RABBIT

5 MARCH - 3 APRIL

Don’t be a bunny. There’s no bounce

in this Rabbit; it’s heading back down

the earth burrow. Expect some sharp

market volatility this month and an

overall decline. Smarties will be con-

tent with what they’ve got for now.

If you plan meticulously early in the

year and build positions methodically,

your rewards will come, slowly, but

surely. At work, walk softly but be

ready to move quickly when opportu-

nity knocks. A confl ict between metal

and earth may cause irritability and

even tummy troubles. Eat slowly and

sensibly, and avoid too much meat.

Focus on family and friends.

4 APRIL - 4 MAY

The return of the Dragon promises

wealth for the watchful and the fl eet

of foot, so jump back in and fi ll your

boots. But beware: this month threat-

ens broken bones and even blows to

the head! Ward off these evils with

soothing, protective music. Metal

boosts water, which bodes well for

relationships; there’s a twinkle in the

Dragon’s eye. Now is also a good time

to focus on the intellect. Beauty and

brains may prove an irresistible blend.

At work, steer clear of the water cooler:

gossips are sharpening their Dragon’s

claws. Keep your heart open to kind-

ness from strangers.

APRIL EARTH DRAGON MAY EARTH SNAKE

5 MAY - 4 JUNE

Beware the slippery Snake! Many

pockets will be bitten hard this month.

Play it safe and consolidate. Buy lot-

tery tickets in bundles of eight. The

Brown Snake, with its combination of

fi re and earth, can be one of the most

treacherous signs. As summer’s heat

begins to build, keep a cool head, a

true heart and a healthy body. There

will be much sickness abroad this

month; respiratory and abdominal

problems, in particular, will lay low

many friends and colleagues. Seek

solace and protection in water and

music. Opportunities arise at work,

but can the Snake be trusted?

PREDICTIONS ALL THE THRILLS AND SPILLS . . .

5 JUNE - 6 JULY

Talk about the doldrums: don’t expect

thrills in equities this month or next.

However, metal means money . . . and

this Horse’s hooves thunder good luck

for the nimble-footed. As the Lone

Ranger was wont to cry: ‘Hi ho, Sil-

ver!’ Yet, just as this is not a year for

reckless risk, this is not a month to look

to the mane chance. Run steady. Pros-

pects are promising for those open

to romance, but beware the gossips.

Health and wealth may go hand in

hand, but be careful about the source

of your food and what’s got loose in the

kitchen. Tummy bugs will leave many

bed-ridden and worse.

JUNE METAL HORSE JULY METAL SHEEP

7 JULY - 6 AUGUST

Steer clear of the market this month:

keep your money safe and in sight.

Many will be tempted back into stocks,

but these are dreary doldrum days.

Worse yet, evil energies threaten on 7,

16 and 25 July and 3 August. Nonethe-

less, the confl ict between the Sheep

and ruling Cow strengthens earth,

which can produce extraordinary

good luck. Take no risks, but remain

alert and be open to opportunities

from unexpected quarters. Avoid cold

foods . . . and cold hearts. Now is not

the time to be pursuing objects of

desire. They may turn out to be wolves

in sheep’s clothing.

AUGUST WATER MONKEY

7 AUGUST - 6 SEPTEMBER

Watch this cheeky Monkey scamper

high above the earth, carrying a pouch

of metal money on his back. As ever

during this earth-bound year, be wary

of wild speculation. However, this

month holds great promise for those

who have been carefully and cleverly

building solid positions. As summer

slowly slides away, gold shines brightly

and oil may boil. Be particularly wary of

alcohol and rich foods: over-indulgence

at this time may have serious and rapid

ramifi cations for your health. You may

feel frisky as September opens, but keep

your powder dry: the Chicken knows

best what will fl oat your boat.

SEPTEMBER WATER CHICKEN

7 SEPTEMBER - 7 OCTOBER

Cold hands; warm heart. As the weather

slowly cools, passions will quickly rise.

The same holds true of the market, with

some spectacular feverish runs. Expect

volatility, as wood and fi re combine to

try to keep money metal in the earth.

Romance waxes strong all this month

and next, but ensure you get adequate

rest between engagements. The Cow

encourages consolidation and this

period, in particular, is one in which to

conserve your energies. As we move

deeper into the second half of the year,

events will occur that require sustained

displays of physical and mental prow-

ess. Don’t be caught napping.

8 OCTOBER - 6 NOVEMBER

This Dog’s bark is strong and hearty,

chasing the market higher. But look

before you leap: some ladders have

broken rungs. This has been a year for

the cautious, the clever and the nim-

ble-footed. As it draws towards a close,

more and more opportunities will

open for those who’ve put in the hard

yards. Continue to chart your path stra-

tegically in all spheres: look left, right

and even overhead and behind before

moving forward. Don’t borrow from

strangers - particularly not for specula-

tive ventures. Exercise your mind and

muscles regularly. Spend time with old

friends. The wooden Dog is a pack ani-

mal that likes rolling in the earth.

OCTOBER WOODEN DOG NOVEMBER WOODEN PIG

7 NOVEMBER - 6 DECEMBER

As the infl uence of this year’s heavy

earth element slowly weakens, the

market will strengthen and continue its

rise, with wood showing its solid infl u-

ence. However, at this stage, there’s

still confl ict and uncertainty, so move

carefully. This is not a peaceful period,

generally, in any sphere. Keep water

nearby, relax with calming music and

maintain a generous heart. The Dog is

gone, so don’t bite back at those who

annoy you, even though there are

many who will test your patience this

month. Consider travelling, but not too

far, to help boost your energy levels.

. . . WHAT THE OLD BROWN COW OF 2009 HAS IN STORE

7 DECEMBER - 4 JANUARY

This Rat loves the water, which earth

ordinarily shrinks from. However, both

the Rat and Cow have a strong earth

attraction this year, so the result is ben-

efi cial. In a nutshell: the market will

continue to rise. As ever, tread warily,

but the Brown Cow looks set to leave

us smiling - and certainly happier than

when we started the year. Consolidate

your gains and plan carefully for further

strength. Nonetheless, there may be

disappointments this month. Beware

of opposition at work, as well as last-

minute cancellations that may cost you

fi nancially and emotionally. Romantic

setbacks will turn to your advantage

next month.

DECEMBER FIRE RAT JANUARY FIRE COW

5 JANUARY - 3 FEBRUARY

Winter will come on strong and hard as

we head once more towards Chinese

New Year. The old Brown Cow disap-

pears into the swirling snows, and the

eyes of 2010’s Metal Tiger burn bright.

The market won’t retreat; but nor is it

yet ready to forge further ahead. Those

who have walked slowly and steadily

with the Cow throughout the year may

now sit contented by the fi reside, plan-

ning their future; those who rushed

ahead recklessly have only themselves

to blame if their pockets are empty.

Enjoy this special time: spend time

with family, eat well, rest well . . . and

look forward to an even more prosper-

ous period ahead.

SO, WHAT’S IN IT FOR US?

RAT PEOPLEChances are that last year was a stinker for Rats: under the

Chinese zodiac, we tend to have rotten years when our

sign matches the cycle year. So, life is now looking up,

particularly once Spring has sprung. But take it easy: this

is a time to recover, take stock and position yourself. The year should fi nish well.

CAREER The infl uence of two lucky stars means your hard work will be appreci-

ated; the problem is you probably don’t feel like putting in the hard yards. Carpe

diem, as the koi said to the goldfi sh. This is a great opportunity to show what you

can do. The lucky star Yu Tang brings help from powerful people.

MONEY Sorry, but you’re not going to make your fortune this year. Play safe and

cover your assets. In the market, you’re most likely to buy high and sell low. Your

business will go well, if you focus on consolidation, not high-wire acts. If you feel

like taking a punt, stick to lottery tickets - and don’t hold your breath.

LOVE The combination of the Rat and the Cow makes for beautiful music, believe

it or not, so your heart may skip a beat or two, particularly towards the end of the

year. The only cloud on the horizon is the lonely star Gu Chen: if you’re already

in a relationship, tread very carefully. And maybe get out of the house more.

HEALTH You shouldn’t have any major health problems this

year - but chances are that you’ll be bedevilled by snuffl es,

sniffl es and sneezes. Eat well, exercise hard and get plenty of

rest. And if you’re not feeling quite up to scratch, steer clear of

sick friends and funerals.

COW PEOPLEYes, it’s your year, Cows, but in name only. Under the

Chinese zodiac, having the same sign as the cycle year

means you’re opposed to the presiding god. D’oh! What

to do? Work hard and keep smiling. It gets better. And

there’s money to be made. Remember: The glass is half full.

CAREER Change is likely, which can be good or bad, depending on your situa-

tion. Powerful people are ready to help, but you’ve got to keep your spirits up.

And watch out for competitive colleagues. Keep your head down and play it safe.

The star Hua Gai may be benefi cial if you’re creatively inclined.

MONEY As in most other spheres this year, expect the unexpected. On the one

hand, there’s an unlucky broken star in your money fi eld; on the other, you can

make quick and easy money with the help of others. As much as possible, plan

your fi nances carefully. Then again, sometimes you can think too much.

LOVE Get set for an emotional rollercoaster: of course, that can be fun, depending

on who’s in the car with you. Distance is the enemy: show your loved ones how

much you care; and don’t let your lover stray too far. If you’re a single Cow right

now, you may well end the year over the moon.

HEALTH There’s more than enough worry to go around, so

watch your health. Vigilance is the key, even if you’re just out

for a stroll: the unlucky stars Jian Feng and Fu Shi have a habit

of tripping up the unwary. Avoid steak. Or, as Bart Simpson

would say: ‘Don’t have a cow, man.’

TIGER PEOPLEThank your lucky stars, Tigers - none more so than Hong

relationships, and this will spill into all spheres. Your

charm will knock their socks off. But play it by ear: the

best-laid plans can turn to dust. Go with the fl ow and don’t show those claws.

CAREER Thanks to the lucky sun star Tai Yang, you’ll shine all year - and your

bosses will be dazzled. So much so that they’ll give you more responsibility, if not

more money. A few words of warning, though: you need to focus hard and block

out emotional issues. Subdue your ego, too, and take nothing for granted.

MONEY Although no lucky stars infl uence your money sphere, with the help of

Hong Luan in your relationships, your prospects look bright. However, beware

any fi nancial dealings with close friends or relatives: they will end in tears. Also,

watch that you’re not deceived with investment advice. Don’t be greedy.

LOVE Settle down, Tigers! You’re looking great on the love front. Singles will get

lucky; lovers will get cosy (listen for wedding bells) and married Tigers will receive

lots of support from their spouses. But go easy with that animal charm: more than

one person will develop a crush on you. And the gossips may have a fi eld day.

HEALTH You’re as fi t as a fi ddle and as strong as an ox. The

only slight worry is a tendency to despondency, particularly in

the face of work pressure. Stay relaxed; consider meditation or

some form of stress relief. There are no injuries or health prob-

months of the year. This is defi nitely not the time for taking risks. Don’t get greedy

over the short term, despite one or two tempting offers. Your payoff depends on

you putting in plenty of hard yards early on.

LOVE You should have done pretty well with love last year, so don’t expect cham-

pagne and roses this time around. If you’re a single bunny, you’re likely to hook

up . . . but it won’t last. Those in long-term relationships will fi nish the year happy

and confi dent about the future, having overcome at least one major hurdle.

HEALTH You Rabbits are tough and you’ll come through this

year stronger than ever. But the infl uence of several unlucky

stars means you’ve got to be careful about your own health

and that of those you love. Watch out for injuries, too, particu-

larly muscle strain. Run, Rabbits . . . but warm up well.

YOUR YEAR AT A GLANCE

DRAGON PEOPLEYou Dragons tend to be dreamers, but this Earth year will

bring out your practical side. You’ll have the opportunity

to invest and learn - hopefully not from your mistakes.

One or more people will offer you support, but keep your

ideas to yourself. Curb your enthusiasm - and your fi ery temper.

CAREER You probably won’t feel too ambitious this year, but that’s no bad thing

considering the waning metal-water energy. Nonetheless, fi ght your tendency to

be passive and negative. Stay calm with your bosses and colleagues. The infl u-

ence of the star Tai Yin may bring you a strong female mentor.

MONEY New ventures or investments may do well, thanks to the lucky moon

star, but be careful how much you invest because there are as many opportuni-

ties to lose as there are to gain. With proper planning, you’ll accumulate steadily

throughout the year, and pick up some easy money along the way.

LOVE Although last year’s lonely star has faded, there’s no strong lucky infl uence

for single Dragons, so it may be another year of microwave meals for one at home.

For those already in relationships, it’s smiles all round. Just keep the nagging in

check and don’t breathe fi re every time things don’t go your way.

HEALTH What is it with you Dragons and your digestive prob-

lems? Expect more of the same this year, particularly from Sep-

tember onwards. That aside, you’ll generally feel great and look

good, too, so long as you get plenty of sleep. Which shouldn’t

be a problem for you singles by the sounds of things.

YOUR YEAR AT A GLANCE

SNAKE PEOPLEYou lucky devils! You’ve got the best money luck of all

the signs this year and the makings of a brilliant career,

thanks to the star San Tai. To top it all off, you’re in synch

with the presiding god. There’ll be plenty of opportunities

for clever Snakes, but you’ve got to know when and where to strike.

CAREER Two strong lucky stars mean you’re likely to shine this year. You’ll do

well for your company, particularly on a big project, and you’ll be well rewarded,

with a pay rise, promotion or both. What to watch for? Being too lackadaisical;

colleagues trying to block your promotion; and badmouthing and backstabbing.

MONEY With the wealth star Jin Gui riding high, you Snakes are looking fl ush.

However, this isn’t a windfall star: get out there and fi nd that money, because it’s

not going to fi nd you. Chances are good of signifi cant unexpected income, but not

from gambling. Still, it can’t hurt: buy yourself a bunch of lottery tickets.

LOVE You can’t win ’em all, and you’re not going to be winning any hearts this

year. Single Snakes had better get used to it: there’ll be plenty of dinner parties

and other social events, but you’ll probably be going home alone. Those of you in

relationships need to work extra hard. And enough with those hissy fi ts.

HEALTH Relationship frustrations may spill over into your health

sphere if you’re not careful. Try to get as much sleep as you

can because insomnia rules this year. Any little aches and pains?

Don’t worry about being a hypochondriac: take them straight to

the doctor. This isn’t the year to take risks with your health.

HORSE PEOPLENever mind the neigh-sayers, you Horses have got plenty

to look forward to this year, particularly when it comes to

money. Get off to a quick start, settle down to a steady pace,

and then romp home. Attention to detail is crucial, so read

the fi ne print. And keep your chin up: help is at hand from an unexpected quarter.

CAREER Several unlucky stars loom over your career, especially earlier in the

year, meaning you’ll have trouble focusing and projects will take far longer than

planned. Hang in there: it’s darkest just before dawn, and a strong fi gure will step

in and lighten your load. There’s even a chance of promotion on the horizon.

MONEY Horses have the second-strongest money luck of all the signs this year, so

there should be plenty of opportunities to make hay. Don’t look for any windfalls,

though, and you may have to share what comes your way. After one small fi nan-

cial loss, you should start to steadily fi ll those saddlebags.

LOVE You Horses are hot! Love is in the air big time in the form of the star Xian

Chi. It’s good news if you’re single: you’ll meet someone new or hook up with

an old friend. Unfortunately, it won’t last. Those already in a relationship need to

tread very carefully: the temptation to stray will be strong.

HEALTH The good news is that there’s no sign of injury any-

where for Horses. The bad news is that this threatens to be an

exhausting year on all fronts. The fatigue of the social whirl

alone could fell an ox. Despite the distractions, make sure you

get enough sleep and eat properly. And come November, it

wouldn’t hurt to donate blood.

SHEEP PEOPLEYou Sheep probably did better than most last year, but

you’re out of favour with the presiding god now. Don’t

fret, though: this confl ict will trigger signifi cant changes,

but most will be favourable. You’re going to have to work

harder, but it will pay off. Try to lead with your head rather than your heart.

CAREER If you’ve been thinking about a change - anything from a new job to start-

ing your own business - this may be the year to bring it on. If you’re happy where

you are, keep your head down and don’t try to be the hero. Chances are good that

you’ll come up with a cunning plan that will boost business, without even trying.

MONEY Watch your wallet: an ascendant broken star means you may have trou-

ble accumulating wealth, even if you’re raking it in. Keep a close eye on your

cashfl ow and brace yourself for unexpected expenditure. Invest for the longer

term, possibly in property. Keep clear of risky ventures and mahjong tables.

LOVE Talk about extremes: your love life will be either humdrum or hair-raising,

depending on whether change hits this sphere for you. If it does, it’ll be big: a new

beau, a new baby, a bust-up. Be careful that the pressures of work don’t fl ow over

too heavily into your home life. It’s likely to be tricky enough there anyway.

HEALTH Don’t let your work get on top of you, because it

threatens to affect your health, particularly towards the end of

the year. Minor aches and pains can turn nasty all too quickly,

so don’t be shy about running to the doctor to get yourself

checked out. Get as much sleep as you can squeeze in. And

watch out for tummy bugs.

MONKEY PEOPLEOh, you lucky Monkeys! You’ll be hard pressed to put a

foot wrong this year. Career, money, love . . . everything’s

looking good, and the second half of the year will be even

better. Beware of those who’ll be jealous of your good

luck. Lend a hand where you can: you’ll feel good and it’ll be worth your while.

CAREER If your prospects were any brighter you’d need shades. With three major

lucky stars lighting your way, there’s no stopping you - not even jealous colleagues.

You’ll have to work hard, but everything will fall into place. Everyone will love

your ideas and you’ll be rewarded, fi nding favour with powerful people.

MONEY Fill your boots by the light of your lucky money star. You should be well

in the money this year, but largely from hard work rather than any unexpected

windfall. A note of caution: Don’t show off your wealth, because there’s a strong

chance of a loss; nothing major, but enough to put a big dent in your day.

LOVE You Monkeys have got your charm machines turned up to No.11 this year.

You’re irresistible. Singles may fi nally fi nd The One; those in relationships may fi nd

themselves getting hitched; and for married Monkeys it just keeps getting better. But

watch that charm, you cheeky chimps: the temptation to stray will be strong.

this year. Although your health sphere looks excellent, extra-

CHICKEN PEOPLEYou Chickens should have done relatively well last year

and your luck will continue under the benevolent Cow.

Box clever and you’ll have something to crow about.

Although you shouldn’t have to work as hard as last year,

you’ll have to plan far better. And prepare for the unexpected.

CAREER You’re in harmony with the presiding god, so expect stability rather than

change this year. With two strong lucky stars in your corner, you’ll shine at work,

possibly through a business-development project. However, marshal your argu-

ments well: naysayers and jealous colleagues will try to show you up, otherwise.

MONEY There’s nothing chickenfeed about what’s in store for you in the money

sphere this year. Thanks to the strong infl uence of the lucky money star Jin Gui, you

should be well rewarded not only from your job but also through your investments.

Watch out though: you’ll be tempted to spend much more than you should.

LOVE Who knew? Chickens and Cows make for beautiful friendships. Unfortu-

nately, there’s an unlucky star that keeps upsetting the applecart and turning every-

thing pear-shaped (though hopefully not your partner). There’s plenty of opportunity

for misunderstandings and interference by third parties. Singles: Go hard early.

HEALTH Watch your step, literally. You Chickens are acci-

even if you do get yourself tripped up, you shouldn’t be out of

the two lucky stars Tian Jie and Jie Shen will often turn appar-

DOG PEOPLEKeep your head . . . and keep it down. You should come

out of this year in good shape, if you’re willing to work

hard, resist getting frustrated, and step out of your com-

fort zone once in a while. It’s all too easy to get into

distracting arguments, but you’ve also got plenty of support. Focus on your Dog

strengths of loyalty and perseverance.

CAREER There’s potential for plenty of misunderstandings on the work front, with

two lucky stars and two unlucky stars battling it out for infl uence. Your best bet is

to work hard, walk softly and focus on your people skills. That will keep the back-

stabbers and naysayers at bay. Autumn looks like being a good stretch.

MONEY There’s a lucky star on the horizon, but you’ll work hard for your money

this year. There’ll be opportunities to do well from investing, but think hard before

diving in. Greed isn’t good this time around, and risk is for the birds. Longer-term

looks the best. And watch your outgoings: expenses threaten to burn a big hole.

LOVE Sigh. It looks like being ‘only the lonely’ this year. If you’re already in a rela-

tionship, engage your brain before opening your mouth: nagging will only buy you

a big bag of trouble and arguments will get you nowhere. Try some sweetness and

light. And steer clear of temptation. Single? You may get lucky, but it won’t last.

HEALTH There are no major threats of illness or injury, but

lay off the deep-fried food and go easy on the booze. Learn to

relax and be on guard so that problems from work and rela-

PIG PEOPLE

This won’t be a snout-in-the-trough year, but if you play

it smart you’ll defi nitely bring home the bacon. Expect

plenty of change, with some particularly positive events

during the fi rst three months. Resist a tendency to lazi-

ness; if you put in a bit of effort you’ll be well rewarded. And you can rely on

plenty of support.

CAREER There’s a good chance you’ll travel more than you planned. Don’t

begrudge it, because it’s likely to be benefi cial. A lot will be expected of you at

work, so stay focused and put in the hard yards, even if there’s no immediate pay-

off. Ignore the backstabbers. Someone powerful will take you under their wing.

MONEY There’s an unlucky star glowering over your money sphere, but don’t

fret because there’s also some quick and easy money to be made with the help of

friends. Unexpected expenses threaten to hit you hard, so keep a few spare shekels

under the pillow. Beware of friends wanting a loan, and steer clear of property.

LOVE The good news is that there’s no really bad news, but it’s a little humdrum

on the love front, with no major sparks in the offi ng. Spend as much time as you

can with family and loved ones; they can offer plenty of support this year. Spend

time outdoors: it will work in your favour. Be on guard against third parties.

HEALTH You Pigs are in fi ne fettle and should be fi t as fi ddles

all year long. The main thing to watch is that you get enough

sleep: you can’t afford to be drowsy at work. And steer clear of

WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM HU JINTAO (HORSE) 21 DECEMBER 1942

Horses are a little on the outer with the

presiding god this year - not so much

that they’re in any serious danger,

but they can expect some signifi cant

changes. This may be telling for

China’s fortunes in 2009: not only

is the country’s mane man, President

Hu Jintao, a Horse, but so is his

Premier Wen Jiabao.

Filial relations will be a big

concern for Horses this year. And

in his role as father of the country,

Hu can expect quite a bit of trouble

from some of his millions of “youngsters” (par-

ticularly during November), given that so many are already out of work due

to the global economic slowdown and domestic restructuring.

Will Hu’s stimulus package and other measures come big and soon enough

to steer the economy through the troubled waters ahead? The feng shui signs

are certainly positive: Horses are in luck when it comes to fi nances this year,

with a focus on sharing their wealth with others. That may bode well for

Beijing’s bid to boost domestic consumer demand.

According to feng shui principles, joyful events fl ush out bad energy: thus,

in 2008, the Beijing Olympics are said to have helped safeguard China from

the troubles that have bedevilled other major economies around the world.

On that basis, New China should fi nish 2009 in great shape, with its 60th

anniversary celebrations in October and the 10th anniversary in December

of the handover of Macau.

Hu will certainly be tested this year (particularly during March, after a good

start), with the unlucky stars Si Fu and Xiao Hao threatening minor health

and wealth issues. But with Horses protected from danger by the lucky star

Yue De in 2009, he’ll come through stronger and more respected.

If Hu were a superstitious man, he’d be advised to keep a crystal or two on

the presidential desk. They help absorb bad energy, calm the mind and keep

you at your best - or feeling your oats, as Horses might say.

29

BARACK OBAMA (COW) 4 AUGUST 1961

Barack Obama will move into the Oval

Offi ce on the very cusp of his Chinese

astrological year. Unfortunately, that’s not

as good as it may sound. It may be the year

of the Brown Cow but, according to feng

shui principles, this means that people born

under the sign, like Obama, are offending

the presiding god - and that means plenty

of turmoil ahead.

Hardly news to Obama: he takes over

a US economy that’s so deep in the red it

makes the Texas Chainsaw Massacre seem

like a paper cut. He inherits a whopping

federal defi cit from the unpopular George W

Bush (Chinese zodiac sign: Fire Dog), and his big-spending economic-

recovery package is already valued at more than US$775bn.

With a mischievous broken star in his money fi eld, Obama is likely to fi nd

himself tagged the “trillion-dollar man” before the old Brown Cow is done

with him. And with little help this year from the element of fi re - a force that

spurs fi nancial activity - he’ll have his work cut out for him trying to staunch

the global economic haemorrhage.

To some, Obama has the charisma of Bill Clinton and the promise of John

Kennedy, but his budding relationships with world leaders will be sorely

tested this year. And a note to Obama’s secret service detail: the President-

elect is under threat of injuries, particularly in June and December. Obama’s

general health will need watching, too, with the dastardly stars Jian Feng and

Fu Shi potentially playing havoc: the Prez would be well advised to keep up

those intense gym workouts he’s known for.

If it all sounds a little gloomy for the most powerful man in the world,

bear in mind that the prospects for Cows in this diffi cult year depend to

a great extent on how mentally tough they are. And help is at hand when

things get nasty in the form of the lucky star Hua Gai, which encourages

creative genius. So, look to Obama to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Of course,

a tearaway market bull would be even better.

30

DONALD TSANG (MONKEY) 7 OCTOBER 1944

WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM

Basking in the light of the lucky rela-

tionship star Tian Xi, Hong Kong

Chief Executive Donald Tsang

Yum-kuen will continue to fi nd

favour with his masters in Beijing in

2009. As if that’s not good enough,

he’ll be blessed by the lucky stars

Gui Ren, which safeguards even the

most reckless of spirits from danger,

as well as Zi Wei and Long De.

It’s hard to see this Monkey putting

a foot wrong during the next

12 months.

Never mind the dreadful eco-

nomic outlook, Tsang’s wealth luck is strong this year. After all, he’s sit-

ting on a massive wad of cash in the form of the government’s Capital Works

Reserve Fund, and the signs are that he’ll spread the joy. We won’t be see-

ing any signifi cant slowdown in government building projects, particularly

along the waterfront, all of which should be good news for developers.

Tsang’s health outlook looks to be relatively trouble-free, but there’s a

threat of gastrointestinal and breathing problems for him and his family.

Given his role as Chief Executive, “family” may encompass the wider popu-

lation, and Tsang may want to get serious about his Action Blue Sky Cam-

paign to improve Hong Kong’s much-maligned air and environment.

His more-personal pet project, the HK$300,000 fi sh pond he built for his

beloved carp at Government House, will pay dividends this year: the water

will help ward off the evil feng shui from the worst slump since the Asian

Financial Crisis in 1998. The more water the better by the looks of things.

Tsang’s career prospects are good, but he’s going to have to work his fi n-

gers to the bone if he’s to benefi t. While recharging the drain on his energy

levels by communing with his koi, Tsang’s thoughts may well turn to what

should be his top priority: jobs . . . including his own. He may be in the good

books with Beijing for now, but unless he handles this issue well, next year

may be a different story.

31

REGINA IP (TIGER) 24 AUGUST 1950

Who says a tiger can’t change its

stripes? During the past few years,

the woman once known as Hong

Kong’s Iron Lady, controversial

former Secretary for Security Regina

Ip Lau Suk-yee, has reinvented

herself as a softer, gentler, born-

again democrat, complete with

new hairdo, smiles all round

and a guest appearance on

Macanese celebrity chef Maria

Cordero’s popular cable-TV

cooking show.

Ip’s much-vaunted political comeback, after a year of study in the US, has

been fairly subdued since she won a seat in the Legislative Council elections

late last year, but the ambitious Tiger’s career prospects look bright in 2009

and few doubt that she still has her eye on the top job in three years’ time.

Will Donald Tsang’s bowties be replaced by Ip’s stirfries?

The Year of the Cow will agree well with Tigers, and we can expect big

things from Ip in 2009, thanks to the infl uence of the powerful and lucky star

Hong Luan. This will benefi t her in almost every sphere, especially personal

relationships: the lady is likely to be networking big time, turning on the

Tiger charm and winning over some signifi cant and powerful backers.

However, there’s a possible fl y in the ointment in the form of the malevolent

infl uence of the unlucky star Tian Kong, which tends to disrupt the best-laid

plans. This will put Ip’s fl exibility, pragmatism and presence of mind to the

test. More than likely, she’ll come out of it unruffl ed.

Indeed, don’t be surprised if the one-time Iron Lady develops a seriously

golden glow: not only should she do well fi nancially, but romance is in

the air, with November being a particularly potent month for puckering up.

Watch for happy snaps of Ip and her new beau in the gossip mags later in

the year. As for the man, whether or not he’s tall, dark and handsome, he’ll

certainly need to be strong. Born under the infl uence of the metal element,

Ip is one mighty tough Tiger.

32

GILLIAN CHUNG (MONKEY) 21 JANUARY 1981

WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM

The good news for Canto-poppet

Gillian Chung Yun-tung, after a

horror Year of the Rat, is that things

are defi nitely looking up. The

seemingly sweet and innocent

Twins singer became better

known for vice than her voice in

2008, after photos of her and actor

Edison Chen Koon-Hei engaging

in monkey business appeared on the

internet. It probably wasn’t quite the sort of

exposure this little Monkey had in mind, with

many commentators predicting that the scandal

would sink her career. Her every public appearance

was met with protests and criticism and she was unceremoniously dropped

from the Beijing Olympics opening celebrations.

But that’s all behind her now, with three lucky stars shining down on chimps

like Chung this year. Her career is set to quickly get back on the fasttrack

from about April, with the support of infl uential people, paving the way for

a comeback around mid-year, when the hearts of fans will start to melt with

the rising temperatures. Although Chung looks likely to earn seriously good

money this year, she’ll have to work harder than ever. Given the way the

Twins are reportedly driven by their management, that’s tough indeed.

Monkeys are on the make in 2009, charming the pants off everyone they

come in contact with, thanks to the infl uence of the star of celebrations

Tian Xi. For singles, this means budding romances - especially for Chung,

given that she was born with phoenix eyes, which make her quite the male

magnet. Female Monkeys are likely to do best when it’s cold outside, at the

beginning and end of the year.

However, there’s a dark cloud on the horizon in the form of the unlucky

star Hong Yan, which has a knack for interfering with the good vibes of

Tian Xi, exposing Monkeys to amorous complications, gossip and scandal.

Which sounds alarmingly Britney Spears and Oops! I did it again. Keep your

head down and your nose clean, girl.

GET YOUR MOOVE ON

Feng shui is all about energy fl ows: ensuring the good stuff fl ows in and the bad vibes

are blocked. Given that we spend so much of our time in the bedroom and offi ce, the

optimal positioning and alignment of your bed and desk can make all the difference

to your luck throughout the year. What to do? Sketch fl oor plans of your offi ce and

bedroom, with north at the top. Then divide them into a direction grid of

nine sections. The general aim is to ensure you spend most of your

time in the most favourable locations: the southeast, southwest and

northwest. Below are a few specifi c tips (see overpage as well).

GOOD VIBES IN THE BEDROOM . . .

Your bedroom door shouldn’t

Make sure that no mirror in

Don’t position your bed’s

. . . AND GOOD LUCK AT THE OFFICE

Don’t sit with the offi ce door

It’s also important to be aware of the

These sectors shouldn’t be disturbed, which means no renovations
