2 Cliveden CloseThis attractive and individual four bedroom detached home, which has an integral double garage, is set in a sought after residential area in Ferndown.

“Twenty eight years ago, when the wooded grounds of an old mansion were being sold off, our sealed bid for the plot was unexpectedly successful and we had no ready plan for developing it,” remembers Robert. “Other nearby plots bought in this way had individual houses built on them and most haven’t changed hands since. Many mature trees that were once part of the grounds are still dotted around; at the bottom of our rear garden there’s an American oak, an English oak and a pine, while next door, there’s a Canadian redwood.”

“We saw a timber-frame house plan that we liked at an Ideal Home Exhibition and the architect altered it for us to allow conventional construction and to provide four bedrooms rather than five,” recalls Jennie. “We then brought all the trades together and had it built with top quality materials, including hand made clay bricks and paviours, 90 year old reclaimed clay roof tiles and hardwood double glazed leaded windows. We used the leftover materials to construct the outbuilding at the bottom of the garden in a similar style. The bespoke designed conservatory was added later, about fifteen years ago.”

“Reducing the bedrooms to four provided a large master bedroom with two windows, which has a dressing room, fitted furniture and an en suite shower room,” explains Robert. “The other three bedrooms are double in size, although one has fitted furniture for a single bed; another has built-in cupboards, while the third has an en suite shower room. The galleried landing provides a small open plan study area over the front door. All the bathrooms and the cloakroom have been renewed with modern white suites.”

“When the house was first built, we installed a German Bulthaup kitchen with light oak cabinets,” continues Jennie. “Later on, we did consider replacing it but we couldn’t improve on the quality and, as its shaker-style hadn’t dated, we just refreshed it by having the cabinets professionally hand painted and by replacing the worktops with granite. The lounge has double doors to the dining room and sliding patio doors to the conservatory, which together with the large patio and garden provides good entertaining space.”

“We have lovely neighbours and it’s quite a social community,” adds Robert. “For the Millennium we had a neighbourhood party, which involved going from one house to another for the different courses of a meal. We also have excellent local amenities including a Sainsbury’s, a Tesco and an Iceland, and there’s soon to be an M&S with a café. There’s a community centre and good schools for all ages. Bournemouth, Sandbanks and the New Forest, the M27 and the M3 are all within easy reach; many people here drive to Southampton Parkway – trains from there to London Waterloo typically take about an hour.”

“We enjoy living in Ferndown and don’t intend to move very far, but it’s time for us to downsize,” Robert and Jennie agree.*
