Reproductive physiology in the female cat

• Follicle growth occurs rapidly over a 2-3 day period just prior to the onset of oestrus.

• Basal serum oestradiol levels peaks of 40-100 pg/ml are attained by or before the onset of oestrus.• Ovulated follicles develop into CL that secrete progesterone within 24-48 hr after ovulation and 2-3 days after mating

• Cat sperm require 1-2 hr for capacitation in the female reproductive tract

• Oocytes remain fertile for about 48 hr

Implantation

• The embryo becomes a morula and enters the uterine horns 5 days after copulation

• Implantation occurs 12-13 days after copulation

• Oviductal transport of fertilized oocytes takes 4-5 days

• Blastocysts migrate in the uterine horns for 6-8 days

The follicles retain the capacity to ovulate in response to a sufficient copulatory stimilis, at least for the first 4-5 days of oestrus

Bring the queen to the male

The animals should not be separated before the 3rd day.

Some cats: Sufficient release of LH in response to copulation only by the 4th or 5th day.
