The Festival d’opéra de Québec is proud to welcome the French soprano Véronique Gens, a remarkable artist with exceptional musical presence and star of the European opera scene. Mrs. Gens has graced the legendary stages of the Paris Opera, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and the Berlin Philharmoniker to name a few, and has devised a program devoted to the arias of Mozart, Rameau and Gluck, three of her favourite composers. Les Violons du Roy and music director Jonathan Cohen will accompany Mrs. Gens for an evening that will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between.
“Her fiery presence and sharp diction infuse her teary low notes and heavenly high notes with meaning. She is no doubt one of today’s greatest dramatic sopranos. Her Iphigénie (Iphigénie en Tauride by Gluck) transcends time and thoroughly bewitches the listener.”

Mozart’s masterpiece The Magic Flute is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. Its divine music and magical story full of twists and turns have endeared this opera to a public of all ages since it was created in 1791.
This will be Robert Lepage’s first time directing The Magic Flute : the internationally acclaimed Quebec director will bring to it all the talent, spirit, and inventiveness he is known for. There is no doubt that the opera’s fantastical world will inspire Mr. Lepage with innovative ideas that would have certainly pleased Mozart himself.

THÉÂTRE LA BORDÉE
The Festival d’opéra is teaming up again this year with Jeunesses Musicales Canada to bring you Jacques Offenbach’s famous operetta, La belle Hélène.
The goddess Venus promises Pâris the love of Helen, the beautiful queen of Sparta, despite her being married to king Menelaus. This famous opéra-bouffe in three acts tells the story of Pâris’ ridiculous schemes to win Helen’s love, and Helen’s half-hearted attempts to elude the handsome prince’s advances. Together with Alain Gauthier’s wonderful staging, a cast comprising some of Canada’s finest young operatic talents will bring this chaotic, uproarious, witty production to life.

The Festival d’opéra de Québec is pursuing its mission to introduce young people to opera with a performance this year by Jeunesses Musicales Canada titled Opera- Candy: The Gourmet Adventure of Hansel and Gretel. This fun, whimsical concert revisits a tale adored by candy lovers everywhere. What better way to discover one of the most satisfying art forms in the world: opera!
Once upon a time there lived two cheerful singers who wished to tell the story of Hansel and Gretel through music. Their mischievous friend wanted to help, but he was so greedy and easily distracted that he kept putting his foot in his mouth—or was it candy? The two singers tried to think of a way to keep him focused, and then it came to them—what if they gave him an important role in the story?
