The King’s Court

Music lineup aims to pleaseFour musical acts span-

ning a range of tastes will provide the musical

foreground for the Festival of America at Grand Coulee Dam July 3 and 4.

From the Cruizers, a popular Spokane band that plays popu-lar songs, to a country duet, to a 60s folk singer to an Elvis im-personator, the enter-tainment is tailored to appeal.

• T h e h e a d l i n e r just before the July 4 Laser Light Show and fireworks, Steve Sogura, does a dynamite tribute to Elvis that seems to leave a lot of the audience either up on their feet or swooning.

He’ll start about 8:15 on both July 3 and July 4.

• The Cruisers, a popular cover band from Spokane, will

entertain from 5 to about 8 p.m. July 3.

• Scott and Kayla, each with talent show-winning gifts in their own rights, team up for some great country music from 5 to 6:30 p.m. July 4.

• A former New Christy Min-strel, William Florian deliv-ers a power-ful trip to the 60s with mu-sic that will make you feel good. Even if you don’t know who the New Christy Min-strels were, you’ll know their legacy

from the rebirth of folk that has influenced much of popular mu-sic since.

Entertainment in the park below the Visitor Center is paid for by the town of Coulee Dam’s hotel/motel taxes for the promo-tion of tourism.

This year’s Festival of America covers two days, Tuesday and

Wednesday, July 3 and 4.The festival is held at the

park below the Visitors Cen-ter and a convenient walkway will take you from the VC to the festival site.

Food and craft vendors will be open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. each day and free music will please the crowds from 4-9:30 p.m. both days.

Of course, on Wednesday, July 4, the highlight of the two-day festival will be fireworks off the top of Grand Coulee Dam.

The festival is co-sponsored by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce and the Coulee Dam Casino. The town of Coulee Dam provides the music through the use of hotel/motel taxes.

There’s food for most tastes, and of course, a number of ven-dors that specialize in treats to fill that empty space while you wait for meal time.

Arts and crafts vendors spe-cialize in handmade items and it’s a good place to pick up gift items for every occasion.

Bring the kids, spread your blanket and stay the day.

A variety of treats are offered at the festival.

Handmade arts and crafts make the perfect gift for every occasion.

FAMILYis why you do it all.Protect what you value the most. Let me, your State Farm agent, help build a solid foundation for you.

Laser show is a must seeOne of the things that

is a “must see” when you are in the Grand

Coulee Dam area is the Laser Light Show.

It’s the story of the dam by laser beams that are di-rected from the Visitor Center onto the face of the dam. The 35-minute presentation takes visitors through the history of the creation of the dam and the results afterwards.

Many visitors who repeat seeing the Laser Light Show say that it is different each time they see it. Of course it isn’t, but many visitors who see the show see something different each time they do.

You can watch the show from dedicated seating at the dam’s Visitor Center from across the river at Freedom Point Plaza, or even from up at the Crown Point overlook. If you are away from the main area near of the Visitor Center you can catch the story line (which is important) on the Bureau of Reclamation audio broadcast at 90.1 FM.

The Laser Light Show be-gins each night during July at 10 p.m. and lasts about 35 min-utes.

Starting Aug. 1, the show begins at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 1, the start time changes to 8:30 p.m. The Laser Show is shown through September. Visitors will have a special treat begin-ning in the summer of 2013, when the Laser Light Show will be completely new.

Take a Grand Coulee Dam tourGrand Coulee Dam tours begin from the east side of the

dam, where visitors go through security metal detectors before they begin.

The official name of the event is the John W. Keyes III Pump-Generating Plant Guided Tour.

Two highlights of the tour, according to director Ivan Snavely, is a visit to the Pump-Generator Station, and a 5-10 minute stop on top of the dam, where visitors can get out and look out over the spillway. The pump-generators play a key role at the dam. They pump water up 280 feet to Banks Lake to irrigate 670,000 acres in the Columbia Basin. And they can reverse the flow, using the wa-ter to generate electricity in times of high demand.

The tours are all controlled, but you are free to look over both sides of the dam, and have time to ask questions of your tour guide.

The tour ends at the same point where it begins.Snavely said tours begin on the hour at 10 a.m. each day and

continue through the final tour of the day at 5 p.m. Tours last from 50 minutes to an hour.

This year there will be a single bus and tours are limited to 40 people. Miss a tour, then there’s always the next one only about an hour away.

“We get a lot of good comments from people who enjoy stop-ping on top of the dam and looking over the spillway,” Snavely said.

Visitors are encouraged to spend some time in the Visitor Cen-ter prior to the main tour so many of their questions will be an-swered, or it will help them form additional questions they can ask while on the tour.

The Visitor Center opens daily at 8:30 a.m. and is open until 11 p.m. during July. In August the hours are 8:30 to 10:30. In Septem-ber the hours change to 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

tours include a stop on top of Grand Coulee Dam.

A tale of towers and birdsRepeat visitors to the area for the July 3-4 Festival of Amer-

ica may notice something different this year.Gone are the towers that used to anchor the northern

end of the park below the Visitor Center at Grand Coulee Dam and carry power lines from the Third Powerhouse across the riv-er.

Frequent visitors may remember the osprey nest that rested atop one of the towers.

It’s still around, but moved a few hundred feet to the north atop a 115-foot wooden pole.

Bonneville Power Administration took care in removing the nest prior to the dismantling of the high steel tower and put it in storage until they were able to place the new pole. Workers care-fully lifted the nest placed on a prepared platform and anchored it to the new pole.

The osprey couple were seen checking out the nest the very day it was placed on the pole, a few yards toward the river from the asphalt pathway that enters the park from the north.

Visitors will also see the beginnings of a new steel tower, this one about 350 feet high, being constructed on the hillside above the Visitor Center. It will carry power lines from the Third Power-house to the switchyards above the dam area.

It is all part of a $10 million project currently underway to relo-cate old lines that at present run inside the dam and up a tunnel to the switchyards.

In towers that no loger exist, last year at this time a pair of osprey hunker down in their nest. Their nest has since been placed on top of a 115-foot wooden pole placed espe-cially for them. It’s just north of the park below the Visitor Center.
