In the “Minoh City Information” section, important notices from Minoh City appear from the Momiji Dayori, the monthly newsletter published by Minoh City and distributed to residents in Minoh City. Cozy Place for Children with International Backgrounds – Introduction of “SAPORUTO” and “KODOMO MOTTO”

◆Activities to Date and Challenges

“Kodomo Hotto” was launched in 2004 as one of MAFGA’s projects for children with international backgrounds. The project originally focused on the following: (1) Study Support - helping children study Japanese and other school subjects (2) Create a Cozy Place - to provide a place where children with international backgrounds can find friends, play and confide in each other. However, even though these children all have “international backgrounds”, each child is unique. Some came to Japan because of their parent’s job or marriage/ remarriage, and cannot understand the Japanese language yet, while others were born and raised in Japan without any problem using the Japanese language, but one or both of their parents are non-Japanese. Each child has different issues and needs different kinds of support. Over the past few years, many children with different cultures have been visiting “Kodomo Hotto”. But we became unsure if this was really a place where all children can feel “Hotto (at home)”. Therefore, starting April 2017 it was decided that (1) “Study Support” and (2) “Creating a Cozy Place” would be divided into separate projects.

“SAPORUTO” is for children with international backgrounds going to Japanese local schools, and have problems with the Japanese language and/or school subjects. They will study with the volunteer staff.

(2) “KODOMO MOTTO” – Creating a Cozy Place (13:00-16:00 on Saturdays) Our goal is to provide a place where children with international backgrounds meet their friends and feel at home. Young people who used to come to “Kodomo

Hotto” will participate in the activity as “seniors” and support the children. While they are at “KODOMO MOTTO, the children are not told what to do, but can do anything they want. Children can choose to play, or study.

◆MAFGA’s Mission

Many people with multiple cultural backgrounds gather and interact at Minoh Multicultural Center. When different cultures meet, it can cause interesting “chemical reactions”. It can sometimes result in conflict, but can also lead to new discoveries. This is a very valuable thing to learn in childhood. We, MAFGA, will keep challenging ourselves so that children with different backgrounds can respect each other’s differences.

checkups for lifestyle-related diseases (high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) and screening for cancer (Stomach, Lung, Colon, Cervical, Breast, and Prostate). There are more than 50 medical institutions (Shitei Iryou Kikan) in Minoh City which provide such checkups. We highly recommend you to take this opportunity and go to both checkups. Please bring your ticket for the lifestyle-related diseases checkup and also your Health Insurance Certificate (Kenko Hokensho) when you visit the designated clinic/hospital. A special ticket is required for lifestyle-related diseases checkup. This ticket will be mailed to the eligible people by June. For details, please refer to the Minoh City website (https://www.city.minoh.lg.jp/kenkou/gankenshin.html) or the Kenshin Guidebook, which was delivered to each family together with April issue of the Momiji Dayori.

※A free ticket for the medical checkup of lifestyle-related

diseases will be sent to residents aged 40 to 74 who have Minoh City National Health Insurance as of Apr. 1, 2017. If you do not receive it by July 3, please contact the Community Health Office (Chiiki Hoken-shitsu).

※You can have the free cancer screening once a year

during fiscal 2017 (from Apr. 1 to Mar. 31, 2018). Please be aware that you may not be able to make an appointment during February and March which is a busy period annually. ●Absent Children Support Project (1) Minoh City offers support for children who are absent or reluctant to go to school for some reason, or are frequently absent. a. Classes to encourage the children to return to school The children can study and enjoy various activities including sports at classes held at Rightpia 21. These activities will help them to be active and have good relationships with others. b. Study supporters College students appointed as study supporters will visit the children’s houses and schools to help them study if they are needed. c. Educational counseling Clinical psychologists and professional staff will help the children and their parents to solve problems with their school support when requested. (2) Counseling at Education Center Children show signs of anxieties or worries by acting differently such as “getting up late”, “a headache or stomachache before going to school” or “smiling less”. ◆Hazardous area… These places have the risk of

mudslides (huge amounts of soil being washed away by heavy rain or earthquake). Because the hazardous area was thoroughly updated, please make sure to check new “Bosai Map”. The hazardous areas are classified as the red zones (the inside area of a red line) and yellow zones (the inside area of a yellow line). Red zone: There is a risk that buildings will collapse in the event of a mudslide. Both inside the house and outside the house are dangerous. The residents should quickly get away from there. Yellow zone: Buildings don’t collapse in the event of a mudslide. But there is a risk that soil and sand flow into the rooms from the windows.

◆“Hinanjo” (emergency shelter)…When your house is

in a dangerous area please evacuate to the “Hinanjo”. The “Hinanjo” is an elementary school of your school area “Kouku” (the inside area of a purple line). (However, the shelter for the area of Kita Elementary School is designated as Maple Hall, and that of the area of Kayano-Kita Elementary School is designated as Dai-ni Junior High School.) Please think of a safe route to the “Hinanjo” and practise walking there with your family.

“Bosai Joho” (disaster prevention information) on the

reverse side of “Bosai Map” is written about the preparation for big disasters which may come tomorrow. Please make sure to check once with your family.

※”Tameike Hazard Map” indicates predicted flood areas

The emergency information includes 3 phases of evacuation plans, “evacuation preparation information (Hinan-junbi: please prepare to evacuate)”, “evacuation advisory (Hinan- kankoku: please evacuate to the elementary school, etc.)” and “evacuation order (Hinan- shiji: you must evacuate immediately)”. This consultation is increasing. In order not to suffer such an injury, a multilingual video and pamphlet was prepared on the Japanese legal system for divorce and other examples of victims.
