There is not the slightest indication that the West, having lost

every trace of ethical wisdom, will be able to solve unaided even

its own economic and spiritual problem, not to speak of the

problems of all mankind. On the other hand, their is a lot of

indication to the contrary. True, Western civilization possesses

great physical and scientific power: but it is also true that this

power has reached its present peak at the expense of social

morality, and that it now threatens to transform the earth into a

wilderness; 'the whole social aspect of Western civilization - its

entertainments- is overshadowed by the desire to stimulate sexual

appetites and to make promiscuity appear "reasonable"; the crass

materialism and the worship of money expressed; 'and so forth;

and lastly, the ethical frustration evident in the lack of any

agreement about the meaning of Good and Evil , and the

submission, in all social and economic matters, to the rule of

"expediency"' that painted lady of the streets, willing to please

anybody, at anytime, whenever she is invoked: does all this (and

much more of the same kind) provides an indication that Western
