We are taught to be thankful. And it’s certainly right to deliver a word of thanks to some of the most insightful and dedicated workers in the arts who, through their unceasing efforts, have helped to shape Hong Kong’s musical landscape. In November and December, Radio 4 pays tribute to six of these iconic figures.

Darwin Chen, Barbara Fei, David Gwilt, Doming Lam, Lo King-man and Yip Wai-hong are all fervent visionaries in their many areas of specialty. Without their years of hard work and leadership, Hong Kong’s music scene today would be quite different. Tune in to My Life in Music to share their lifelong passion for the arts and to trace the pathways that they have taken over the past decades.

Radio 4’s first broadcast of Young Music Makers (YMM) dates back to December 1980. From then on, we invited many gifted young performers to share their artistry on air. In 2011, for the first time, YMM started receiving open applications, and successful candidates appeared on radio, TV, in a Final Concert broadcast live, as well as on CD recordings and special performance clips on the web.

It’s the fourth time that this longstanding project has called for applications. If you are a young talented musician, have a strong passion for the stage, and enjoy sharing your artistry on multiple platforms with others, please send in an audition tape and your application before the deadline. That’s 31 December 2016. You may become a ‘YMM 2017’! And you may like to know that as one of the extensions of the project, a number of successful candidates will go on a trip to Macau to give a joint recital!

One of the greatest conductors of all time, Neville Marriner, passed away last month. He was 92. Many music lovers have enjoyed watching his performances live on stage. Even more have been brought up by the very many recordings he made with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. He visited Hong Kong on a few occasions. His longest stay was probably in 2001 as Head of the Adjudicating Panel for the ‘Hong Kong Competition for Young Asian Musicians’, organised by RTHK, LCSD and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. The city’s final association with him was in November 2014 when he conducted the City Chamber of Hong Kong at Sha Tin Town Hall. With kind permission by the Orchestra, we will rebroadcast his last performance in Hong Kong in Live on 4 on 12 November. Another tribute to the Maestro will be a BBC recording that can be heard a few days earlier on 9 November in the same programme.

懂得感恩,更懂得欣賞身邊的好人好事。11和12月份,第四台

期待透過一系列式節目,感謝多位熱心的藝術工作者。他們別

具藝術觸覺,更孜孜不倦,多年來為香港的音樂發展作出努力和

貢獻。

陳達文、費明儀、紀大衞、林樂培、盧景文和葉惠康多才多藝,

在他們所熱愛的領域中更是高瞻遠矚,領導藝壇。他們數十年的

耕耘,為香港的音樂世界帶來不一樣的面貌。在耕耘集:我的

香港音樂故事中,你會感受到他們如何熱愛藝術,你更可以重索

在過去數十年,他們在香港文化藝術界的足跡。

第四台於1980年12月首次播出樂壇新秀。多年來,我們不斷邀

請好些年青優秀的表演者到電台錄音,透過大氣電波,展現他們

的音樂才華。2011年,我們首次以公開的方式,招募新秀。入

圍者除錄製電台節目外,更亮相電視節目和現場直播的閉幕音樂

會。我們亦為他們製作唱片和供網上分享的演出片段。

「樂壇新秀2017」已是我們第四次公開招募新秀。如果你是年

青表演者,熱愛舞台,並希望以不同形式與人分享你的音樂世

界,歡迎遞交試聽錄音和申請表。截止報名日期為2016年12月

31日。說不定,你就是下一位「樂壇新秀」。而部份新秀將獲

邀到澳門演出,作為「樂壇新秀2017」其中一項後軸活動。

偉大指揮家馬連拿於上月離世,享年九十二歲。不少樂迷曾一

睹他在台上演出的風采,更有不少從他眾多的唱片錄音中,欣賞

過他的精湛演出。馬連拿曾多次訪港,印象中,逗留最長的一次

可能是2001年。當時他擔任「香港亞洲青年音樂家大賽」評判

團主席,該比賽由香港電台、康樂及文化事務署和摩根史丹利

合辦。香港最後一次與馬連拿結緣,則是在2014年11月。當時

他指揮香港城市室樂團在沙田大會堂演出。得到樂團的答允,第

四台特別在11月12日的第四台音樂會中,再次播出這個珍貴錄

音。而在11月9日同一個節目中,我們率先為你播放來自英國廣

播公司的特輯,以紀念這位樂壇一代指揮巨匠。

杜格尊曾多次訪問馬連拿爵士。在本期第4至5頁中,他會分享

在香港和英國與大師接觸的回憶和感受。

A Gentleman Musician

My meeting with Sir Neville was an altogether quieter affair. He was at his

London residence in South Kensington, just a few minutes’ walk from Julian

Lloyd Webber. The main street-level entrance opened and the voice of Sir

Neville invited me to make my way up a couple of floors to his apartment.

Hushed and carpeted, the ambiance of the stairwell suggested a certain

level of wealth and standing, and that impression was reinforced when Lady

Marriner ushered me into the living room where Sir Neville greeted me with a

smile and a handshake. Good natured and friendly, he had the knack of putting

you immediately at ease. I was, I felt, in the company of a true gentleman. This

was somehow reflected in the elegant and rather traditional furnishing of the

room, presided over by a magnificent old grandfather clock, the sound of

which was curiously re-assuring, like an avuncular pat on the back.

Lady Marriner served tea and, once the recorder was running, Sir Neville

was a delight, witty and informative about the early days of the Academy

of St Martin in the Fields, how it began as a group of like-minded friends

making music in the front room with no great ambition to become the

institution we all know and love today. He was also quick to point out that he

had the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time. He and his

colleagues developed a sound that suited Mozart and the Academy became

the orchestra of choice to meet the surge in demand for Mozart recordings.

This demand culminated in the Amadeus soundtrack and a few years

later, in the big anniversary year of 2006. Marriner’s

other love, of course, was English music, and, as

he explained in the interview, Elgar was the natural

choice for the handover concerts, with Nigel Kennedy

playing the violin concerto and Julian Lloyd Weber, the

cello concerto. The major work in both the handover

programmes was Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

The chemistry between us had been warm and

friendly, but it still came as a very pleasant surprise

when, as he saw me out, he told me that whenever

I was in town I was welcome to look him up and pay

him a visit.

The Chaos of a Hong Kong Phonecall

My next encounter with Sir Neville was in 2001, when

he came to Hong Kong as the Chairman of the jury for

the 2001 ‘Hong Kong Competition for Young Asian

Musicians’. The jury line-up also included the pianist

Melvyn Tan, horn player Barry Tuckwell, and soprano,

Margaret Marshall.

I was saddened to hear of the death of Sir Neville Marriner. He

had, of course, at 92, had a few decent innings and, one

imagines, enjoyed a richer and more rewarding life than most

of us could reasonably hope for. Still, his passing feels like the

end of an era, and also, my own intermittent encounters with

him over the years were always vivid and memorable.

The first of these was in 1997. During a Spring break in

the UK I was asked to interview some of the prominent UK

musicians who would be performing during the handover

concerts in Hong Kong on 29 and 30 June. My meeting with

Sir Neville was one of several memorable first encounters that

also included interviews with cellist Julian Lloyd Weber and

percussionist Evelyn Glennie who was seated with curlers in

her hair and a couple of make up artists preparing her for a

photos shoot amidst a general scene of pandemonium.

Naturally I was keen to talk to Sir Neville and I was asked by the Competition

organisers to contact him directly. I left a voice message on his hotel

phone, leaving my mobile number to call back, but feeling that it was rather

unlikely such a celebrity would go to the trouble. Much to my delight, and

consternation, he did return my call. As it happened I was on the top floor

of a tram in Sheung Wan during rush hour when I was aware of my mobile

vibrating in my pocket. As I was being shoved and jostled in a tight pack of

shouting passengers I had to fight just to get to my pocket, getting angry

scowls from fellow passengers as I elbowed them to give me an inch of

space – and lo and behold, above the mayhem and racket of that rush

hour on the tram I could just about make out the impeccably cultured voice

of Sir Neville asking if this was Jonathan as he was returning my call. My

immediate reaction was to go slightly berserk, making desperate gestures

and facial expressions, accompanied with nonsensical Cantonese to get

the jostling, pushing, shouting passengers to ‘M’goi, sai sengdi! – denwa!! –

kéuih ho cheutméng!! Teng m’dóu kéuih góng matyé!!’ (‘Please be quieter!

Phone! Very famous man! I can’t hear what he’s saying!’) Amazingly, it

seemed to do the trick as my fellow passengers stared at me, keeping a safe

distance, clearly having concluded I was unhinged. Sir Neville, overhearing

a little of the hullabaloo, actually asked me if it was a convenient moment,

to which I replied that it couldn’t be better and we were able to arrange a

time for him to come into the studio in person to talk to me on air at 9:15

the following morning.

Music and Eccentricity

That meeting, too, proved memorable. Sir Neville just showed up like a

regular guy, with no special transport arrangements, sitting patiently in the

lobby. When I apologised for keeping him waiting he was quick to re-assure

me that it was fine – he just wanted to be in good time. This time we

focused mainly on the Competition and he was delightfully insightful and

entertaining on the subject of music competitions. I remember I pressed

him slightly on the sometimes controversial point about how to judge when

‘individuality’ becomes ‘eccentricity’, and it somehow became very funny

and we both ended up laughing heartily. Again, as I showed him out, he

invited me to visit whenever I was in London.

Our Final Talk

Sadly, I never did get round to taking up his offer, and

my final conversation with Sir Neville was just two

years ago when he was in great demand all around

the world in his ninetieth birthday year. I managed to

catch up with him on the phone when he was back

in the UK for a rare few days of rest, and, having just

received a Gramophone lifetime achievement award,

this was clearly an occasion for him to look back and

reflect on an exceptionally rich and rewarding life. His

voice was a little weaker but his remarkable energy

was undiminished and, even at the age of ninety, he

was clearly greatly enjoying a mind bogglingly busy

time of it. It kept him young, he said, and he was even

learning new scores!

To the end Sir Neville’s energy and curiosity never let

up, and it was this that, no doubt, kept him going, as

did the fact that, even in old age, he managed to be

young at heart and delight in life’s simple pleasures.

Ever kind and generous, he was probably the least

self-regarding ‘great’ musician I have ever met.

To commemorate and pay tribute to the passing of Sir Neville Marriner, a BBC episode, recorded in 2014 in Sir Neville’s home, will be broadcast in Live on 4 on 9 November (Wed) at 8pm. In the same Radio 4’s programme on 12 November (Sat), the recording of the Maestro’s final performance in Hong Kong with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong in November 2014, will be rebroadcast. Chamber music is an intimate form of performance. A small number of performers face each other and play music where

each player’s voice can be heard. Sometimes the voices chase and imitate each other, and sometimes they sing together in

harmony. The last episode of ‘Artist-in-Residence’ this year had featured violinist and violist Andrew Ling and pianist Michael

Mak, joined by cellist Richard Bamping, performing three very different duo and trio works: Bach’s Sonata for viola da gamba

in G minor, BWV1029, transcribed for viola and piano; Magnus Lindberg’s piece for clarinet and piano Acequia Madre, here

played on viola and piano; and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50.

本年度最後一次「駐台演奏家」邀請了凌顯祐(小提琴和中提琴)與麥柱

基(鋼琴),以及鮑力卓(大提琴)於9月29日在一號錄播室現場演出三首

風格迥異的室樂作品,包括巴赫的G小調古提琴奏鳴曲,BWV1029(為中

提琴與鋼琴改編)、連保的單簧管與鋼琴作品「亞絲罟•瑪達莉」(由中

提琴與鋼琴演出),還有柴可夫斯基的A小調鋼琴三重奏,作品50。一號錄

播室只能容納百多人,這個場地十分適合欣賞室樂演奏。

The aspiration of the ‘Music Beyond Borders’ project has always been to embolden cultural exchange. Since 2003, its music has taken us on many journeys – from Spain to Sweden, Austria to Australia, India to Italy. This year we revisit Italy and explore the region of Puglia and its folk

tradition with Kalàscima. Hong Kong’s Shaolin Fez will be taking us on a world tour of its own.

Founded by HK Philharmonic bassist Samuel Ferrer and launched in 2012, Shaolin Fez debuted with the album Calm Your Storm. This acid-jazz group will take us on a musical travelogue with visits to Latin America, Italy, China, Arabia, Spain, and the USA.

‘Young Music Makers (YMM) 2017’ started taking application

since last month and has generated much attention within the music

community. YMM offers multi-platform exposures to distinguished

young artists. Young instrumentalists and vocalists, soloists, and

ensemble players are welcome to showcase their talent.

Successful candidates will each be featured in a radio programme,

a TV programme, on RTHK’s website, and at the Final Concert. New

this year is the opportunity to perform in Macau in an exchange and

performance with students from the Macau Polytechnic Institute.

This summer, a group of YMM 2015 was invited to perform in the

Mandarin’s House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Macau. On 27

August, yangqin player Yuen Ka-yi, who received the ‘Adjudicator’s

Choice’ Award, was invited to perform at the Macau Cultural Centre

with the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of

Stephen Lam, in Wang Danhong’s Rhapsody. Her performance

The man who founded the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, who conducted many of the world’s leading orchestras, and who recorded the popular soundtrack to the movie Amadeus, British conductor and violinst, Sir Neville Marriner died on 2 October 2016 at age 92 at his home in London.

Born in England in 1924, Marriner began learning the violin and piano with his carpenter father before entering the Royal College of Music in 1939. Two years later, when World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Royal Navy. He went back to the Royal College of Music after his service and went on to study for a year at the Paris Conservatoire.

Marriner began his career as a violinst playing in a string quartet and trio, then in the London Symphony Orchestra where he was Principal Second Violinist (1954 - 1969). In 1958, he founded the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, aiming to form a top-notch conductor less chamber ensemble with London’s best players. Now it has probably become the chamber orchestra with one of the largest discographies, numbering over 500 albums.

Along with his founding of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Marriner also maintained an active role as a conductor beginning in 1969. He founded the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and was their first Music Director (1969 -1978) , and became the Music Director and Principal Conductor of both the Minnesota Orchestra (1979 -1986) and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (1983 -1989). He also worked with orchestras around the world including Vienna, Berlin, and Paris.

For his services to music, he was made a CBE in 1979, knighted in 1985, and was appointed a Companion of Honour by Her Majesty The Queen in 2015 in England. He has also been awarded honours in France, Germany, and Sweden.

Marriner’s last performance in Hong Kong was in November 2014, in which he conducted the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong in their season opening concert. 聖馬田室樂團創辦人和終身主席馬連拿爵士逝世

英國著名指揮家兼小提琴家馬連拿爵士,

於2016年10月2日在倫敦家中逝世,享年

92歲。他曾指揮世界多個著名樂團,更是

聖馬田室樂團的創辦人,亦為電影《莫扎

特傳》灌錄了十分暢銷的原聲大碟。

馬連拿1924年於英國出生,幼年跟隨木匠

父親學習小提琴和鋼琴。隨後,他入讀皇

家音樂學院和巴黎音樂學院,並以小提琴

開展他的職業生涯。在倫敦交響樂團擔任

小提琴手的第三年,他以凝聚倫敦最好的

樂手為目標,創立聖馬田室樂團。該團可

能已成為全世界灌錄最多唱片的室樂團之

一,合共超過五百款錄音。

除了指揮聖馬田室樂團外,馬連拿亦與

其他樂團合作無間。他成立了洛杉磯室樂

團,亦曾出任明尼蘇達樂團的音樂總監和

史圖格電台交響樂團的首席指揮。他的指

揮足跡遍佈全球,曾帶領維也納、柏林、

巴黎等地的樂團演出。

1979年,他因著對音樂的貢獻而獲英國頒

授CBE勳銜,1985年獲封為爵士,2015

年再次獲得英女皇嘉許;此外他亦得到法

國、德國和瑞典贈予勳銜。

馬連拿在2014年11月最後一次來港顯技,

以九十歲高齡指揮香港城市室樂團演出樂

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Ko Tin-lung, the Artistic Director of Chung Ying Theatre. He

mentioned to me that he was busy working on the Oral History Theatre Projects, in which seniors of Tin Shui Wai

come out and tell their own stories to the younger generation. This project was later extended to all 18 districts in

Hong Kong, so that each community has its own and unique narrative account. I thought it was a fabulous idea and

it was the birth of this two-month series, My Life in Music.

Hong Kong was described as a cultural desert in the 1960s. What makes it an important arts hub today? It was the

efforts of many arts practitioners who helped put the city on the cultural map now. Let’s hear a kaleidoscopic review

on the hard work and success stories from Darwin Chen, Barbara Fei, David Gwilt, Doming Lam, Lo King-man, and

Yip Wai-hong, in the first episode of the series on 7 November 2016.

記得多年前訪問中英劇團的藝術總監古天農,當時他正忙著天水圍社區戲劇計劃,找來祖父母輩的長者親身演

繹自己的經歷和故事。這計劃後來發展至香港的十八區,令每區都有屬於它們的口述歷史劇,讓文化得以承

傳。我聽著,覺得那是一個很好的意念,更可以套用在本地音樂界。可能基於商業因素的關係,記錄香港音樂

發展的書籍少得可憐。若我們不再把握時間跟業界的前輩進一步攀談,恐怕更難知道和了解本地音樂的發展。

幸運的是,在我身邊正好有一群音樂界的拓荒者,找他們來作一個口述歷史,談談他們的奮鬥史,回顧如何在

被稱為「文化沙漠」的香港開墾出一片光明的綠洲,豈不是一個難能可貴的機會嗎?

經過多番聯絡和商討,也吃了一點閉門羹後,我有幸得到六位來自不同範疇的音樂界前輩抽空與我傾談。在11

月7日第一集的「耕耘集:我的香港音樂故事」,請來陳達文、費明儀、紀大衞、林樂培、盧景文和葉惠康,

分享在香港的藝術土壤上的開墾與耕耘。

In addition to being one of the most notable sopranos in Hong Kong, Barbara Fei is also well remembered for her always-glamorous appearances. Born into a well-educated family, Fei’s great grandfather was a physician to the royal court in China. Her father Fei Mu was the ‘Poet Director’ of Chinese movies, and his uncle was the President of the Ta Kung Pao newspaper of Hong Kong. Fei said she is indebted to her father who had a strong dedication to and perseverance in the arts. Born in times of turmoil, she was an indomitable person. She is one of the foremost musicians in the promotion of Chinese music in Hong Kong. She established the Allegro Singers more than 50 years ago, and the choir is still active on stage. Fei says she has lived a colourful life, because she can devote herself to the arts and music. She is even more pleased that her pursuit of music fulfilled the wishes of her father. In fact, Fei is an ever energetic person who you often see at concert halls. She will share with us her love of singing and activities in the arts.

人稱「費老師」的女高音費明儀,經常以最整齊亮麗的儀容示人。她生於書

香世代,曾祖父是御醫、父親費穆被譽為中國電影界的「詩人導演」、二叔

是香港《大公報》已故社長。費老師說她自小受到父親的影響,對藝術有份

執著的追求;而生於戰亂時期,令她有一種更堅毅和不屈不撓的個性。她是

本港其中一位最早關注中國民族音樂發展的人物;由她創立的明儀合唱團,

更有超過五十年歷史,而且仍經常活躍於演出,殊不簡單。她說自己一生多

采多姿,因為能夠忠於她喜愛的音樂藝術。而她亦很欣慰最終完成了父親對

她的期望和遺願–作為藝術家而活著!然而,費明儀永不言休,還經常在音

樂廳留倩影。她對音樂的追求和魄力從何而來?請聽她娓娓道來!

The youngest member in this series is the 79-year old Lo King-man. Also

known as the ‘Father of Opera in Hong Kong’, Lo spent most of his full-time

work life as an administrator in universities and tertiary institutions. Since the

1960s, he has been using his spare time to produce operas, and participate

in social and cultural community work. Lo is an ever hardworking person. He

is spirited and devoted to opera, his love of life. Since 2002, he and his opera

collection have been the backbone of RTHK4’s Sunday Opera programme.

However, he said he is only ‘an ordinary artist, who is still working diligently’.

在這個特輯中年紀最「小」的,是明年慶祝八十大壽,有「香港歌劇之

父」之稱的盧景文。這位前香港演藝學院院長在退休前所從事的,是全

職的大專行政工作。然而,舞台藝術創作和社會服務與政策諮詢等義務

公職,卻佔去了他大部份的時間和精力。在過去十四年,他亦風雨不改

為第四台的歌劇迷以英語主持「歌劇世界」節目。我們認識的盧景文,

是個精力充沛、事事親力親為的大忙人,但他卻說自己是個「平凡的藝

術工作者,仍在勤懇地繼續去做」!

Darwin Chen was with the government for 32

years. He began his civil service career as a

manager at City Hall in the 1960s, where he

employed several innovative and entrepreneurial

means to promote the arts. In the 1970s, he was

made the Director of Cultural Services. It was also

the time when Hong Kong’s economy took wing.

He saw a need to enrich the cultural life of the

city, and so helped found the Hong Kong Chinese

Orchestra, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre,

and the Hong Kong Dance Company. He also

encouraged dialogue between local and overseas

arts practitioners by organising numerous festivals

and cultural exchanges. Chen said that being able

to help Hong Kong grow from a cultural desert to

a cultural metropolis is what he is most pleased

to see after his years of service to the arts. It is

no surprise that the Hong Kong Arts Development

Council acknowledged his effort by honouring him

with a Life Achievement Award in 2012.

任文化署署長,並參與創辦了香港中樂團、香港話劇團和香港舞蹈團。他又籌辦不同的藝術節,讓本地和海外藝術家有更

多交流的機會,擴大香港的藝術版圖。陳達文表示,把香港由文化沙漠推動發展至一個文化大都會,是他工作數十年最感

到欣慰的事情。難怪他除了得到多間大專院校的榮譽院士銜外,更在2012年成為香港藝術發展獎終身成就獎的得主!

6 November: Bellini’s La Sonnambula

‘Bel canto’ is an Italian term that literally means ‘beautiful singing’. It denotes the art of elegant, refined, sweet-

toned, and florid vocal expression that dominated the European style of singing and vocal composition in

general and opera in particular of the 18th and early-19th centuries. Vincenzo Bellini (1801 - 1835) was one

of the three great exponents of the ‘bel canto’ style, justly famous for his long, smooth and flowing melodies,

delicate embellishments, and exquisite lyrical beauty. The other two masters of this style were his older

contemporaries Rossini and Donizetti.

The magnificent singing of the two reigning bel canto superstars mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and lyric tenor

Juan Diego Flórez in Bellini’s La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker) is the absolute centre of attraction of this studio

recording made at the Zurich Opera House in 2008. The choice of a coloratura mezzo-soprano for the title role

goes back to the tradition established in the first performances of the work in 1831 in Milan by Giuditta Pasta,

for whom Bellini composed the music. This tradition was later glorified by another great mezzo-soprano, Maria

Malibran, whose brilliant cadenzas have been meticulously studied and adopted by Cecilia Bartoli for her own

interpretation.

The story is based on a ballet-pantomime set in a Swiss village. Amina is betrothed to Elvino. She is found

one early morning asleep in the room of Count Rodolfo, a visiting nobleman staying at the village inn. No one

believes Amina’s protestation of innocence, and Elvino, in despair, repudiates her. The plot proceeds to a happy

ending when the villagers witness Amina sleepwalking across a dangerous bridge over a millstream and singing

a sad lament of her innocence and lost love. Elvino embraces her and the village resumes its celebration of the

lovers’ betrothal.

In addition to Bartoli and Flórez, the cast includes Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, one of the finest bass-baritones of

the rising generation, in the role of Count Rodolfo. Alessandro De Marchi conducts the Chorus of the Opera

House of Zurich and the Orchestra La Scintilla, playing instruments of the period.

13 November: Reimann’s Lear

Aribert Reimann (born 1936) is one of the most honoured and respected living composers of Germany,

especially famous for his series of operas based on great literature. Born in Berlin, Reimann studied

composition, counterpoint, and piano at the Berlin University of the Arts. Upon graduation, he was employed

as repetiteur and coach by the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Reimann embarked on a full-time career as composer and pianist towards the end of the 1960s. In the early

1970s, he was elected a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts and appointed Professor of Contemporary

Lieder at the Berlin College of the Arts. Besides operas, he has written a significant quantity of chamber music,

songs, and orchestral works. He has been honoured repeatedly, including the Grand Cross of Merit of the

Federal Republic of Germany, the Order of Merit of Berlin, numerous awards for achievements in music, prizes

for compositions, and decorations from foreign nations.

Among his most important compositions are the operas based on great literary subjects including: A Dream

Play (1965) after August Strindberg, Lear (1978) after William Shakespeare, The Ghost Sonata (1984) after

Strindberg, The Trojan Women (1986) after Euripides, The Castle (1992) after Franz Kafka, and The House of

Bernarda Alba (1996) after Garcia Lorca, among others.

Lear has a two-part structure set to a libretto by Claus Honneberg based on Shakespeare’s tragedy King

Lear. Reimann wrote the title role specifically for the great German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who had

suggested the subject to the composer. Work began after receipt of a commission from the Bavarian State Opera in 1975. The world premiere

took place at the National Theatre of Munich in July 1978 with Fischer-Dieskau as King Lear. A live recording made during these first performances

will be presented for your appreciation. The cast also includes sopranos Helga Dernesch, Colette Lorand, and Julia Varady as the three daughters

of the King. The Bavarian State Opera Chorus and the Bavarian State Orchestra perform under the direction of conductor Gerd Albrecht

20 November: Tchaikovsky’s Yevgeny Onegin

One of the great achievements of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) and his best known work for the operatic

stage, Yevgeny Onegin (Eugene Onegin) is based on a verse narrative by Alexander Pushkin, with a libretto

written by the composer in collaboration with Konstantin Shilovsky.

Completed in 1878, this opera tells the story of a young aristocrat, well-educated, fashionable, and egotistical,

but bored with the world in general, who rejects the sincere affection of a country girl of modest social status,

only to find himself passionately in love with her years later when she is married to a nobleman of high ranking.

She rejects him, though she confesses that she still loves him. Onegin is left to live in desolation and remorse.

The beautiful score contains several extended scenes which have long become concert favourites. These include

Tatyana’s letter scene, Onegin’s renunciation of love, Lensky’s tragic lament of deep melancholy before his fatal

duel with Onegin, and the brilliant orchestral waltz and polonaise scenes. Tchaikovsky in fact subtitled his famous

opera as ‘Lyric Scenes’.

Our stellar cast has baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky singing the title role, soprano Nuccia Focile as Tatyana, and

tenor Neil Schicoff as Lensky. The St. Petersburg Chamber Choir and Orchestre de Paris perform under the

baton of Semyon Bychkov.

27 November: Delius’s A Village Romeo and Juliet

Written in 1901, this is the most admired operatic composition of Frederick Delius (1862 - 1934), who, in

collaboration with his wife Jelka, wrote the English text based on a story by the Swiss novelist Gottfried

Keller. The fourth of his six operas, A Village Romeo and Juliet was first performed at the Komische Oper

Berlin in February 1907. Thomas Beecham conducted its British premiere at the Royal Opera House at

Covent Garden, London, three years later. Despite its abundance of beautiful music, the work is rarely

staged, although the orchestral interlude before the final tableau, The Walk to the Paradise Garden, features

frequently in concerts and has been recorded many times.

Born in Bradford, England, Delius decided to devote his life to music at the age of 24. After a brief period of

formal study in Leipzig, Germany, he embarked on a full-time career as a composer in Paris, and settled in

nearby Grez, where he and his wife lived for the rest of their lives. As the music critic of The Times wrote in

1929, ‘Delius belongs to no school, follows no tradition, and is like no other composer in the form, content

or style of his music’, which is presented in an ‘extremely individual and personal idiom.’

Sali and Vreli are the children of two farming families who quarrel bitterly over a strip of land that lies between

their holdings. As the years pass, both the greedy rivals are ruined by their costly lawsuit, while the two

children have grown and become deeply in love with each other. They run away from their oppressive homes

into a hostile world from which they finally escape taking their own lives together.

Helen Field, soprano, and Arthur Davies, tenor, are the young lovers. The Arnold Schönberg Chorus and the

ORF Symphony Orchestra are conducted by Charles Mackerras.

Beginning with a Trumpet

I second Wynton’s opinion that Louis Armstrong stands out as the

first and probably most important creator of true jazz language. His

rhythmic fluidity, phrasing and inflection represent a turning point, a

before and after if you will, that has propelled most of the jazz that

follows.

The tenor saxophonist Lester Young and, a close associate, the

singer Billie Holiday brought with them a lyricism and colouristic

approach that provided an avenue of escape from the dance-driven

energy of 1930’s swing.

Moving from Swing to Bebop

The lifestyle of these Swing Era musicians probably had much to do

with the next great development in jazz: Bebop. There are not much

to occupy players out on the road for months at a time in their week-

long engagements in different locations. The most natural way for a

Wynton Marsalis, in his articulate and enlightened comments in the documentary The Wonderful World of Louis Armstrong (directed

by John Akomfrah, 1999) makes the observation that the measure of a truly great artist is that the creative world is changed as a result

of his contribution. In the world of jazz, where lasting success for any player has always been about creating a personal sound and

approach, there have, nevertheless, been a number of seminal musicians whose influence is of such far reaching dimensions that its

reflection is caught in all that follows.

In this series, I will highlight the music of some of these crucial personalities and mention a few of the qualities that make them so great.

Many of the names will, quite rightfully, be quite familiar. If I seem to have left out a player who some feel should be at the top of the list

or, for that matter, given credit to one that doesn’t qualify as a desert island favourite for all, well, we are different and human thankfully.

jazz player to wind down after a hard evening’s gig involved heading

out into the night in search of small ‘after hours clubs’ to play more

music. Of course, in the wee small hours of the morning, the only

listeners were fellow musicians with similar objectives. Over time, an

exploratory style of music developed that sought to expand not only

the technical limits of the players but also the melodic, rhythmic,

and harmonic dimensions of the music itself.

Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie are given the most credit for

‘inventing’ Bebop with its virtuoso displays, chromatic harmony,

and extended phrasing. However, we must also give credit to some

of their rhythm section partners. Bud Powell freed the left hand

of the piano from its ‘stride’ bass and harmony function and Max

Roach brought a melodic and a dialoging quality to the drums;

solid and lasting departures from previous tradition. Certainly, a new

and ongoing aspect of vocal art comes with the scat singing of Ella

Fitzgerald, continuing a tradition made famous by Louis Armstrong

in the 1920s.

Bebop into Fusion

Bending away from the fire-breathing

virtuosi, Miles Davis was a unique

influence in jazz. Leaning away

from complicated harmonies and

emphasising melodic invention he

maintained an instantly recognisable

voice in his playing which spanned

from bebop to fusion with his modal

concepts at the core. His musical

thinking also helped to form many

of the players who passed through

his band and subsequently became

leading lights in their own right.

One such luminary was the tenor

saxophonist John Coltrane. Starting

from the complexities of post bop

chromatic harmonies interpreted

vertically, he gained insight from his

immersion in the modality of Miles

and emerged with a very free melodic

approach, all with tremendous technical

facility. His influence has been so great

that young jazz musicians often tend

to think of his music as a starting point

rather than a culmination of all the jazz

that preceded. Better to build on rock

than sand so let’s give a good listen to

some great boulders of jazz.

Plácido Domingo Renews Contract as General Director of Los Angeles Opera

One of the Three Tenors, the world-renowned Plácido Domingo, has renewed his contract as General Director of Los Angeles Opera through the end of the 2021 – 2022 season.

‘Music is my life, and my three-decade association with LA Opera has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career,’ said Domingo. He expressed that he is incredibly grateful to have taken part in the company’s many artistic achievements, and thankful to be able to continue leading this extraordinary opera company well into the future.

The ‘three-decade association’ started in 1986 when Domingo made his debut with the LA Opera in their production of Verdi’s Otello. Since then, he has performed every LA Opera season. He has sung 28 roles in more than 160 opera productions, and also conducted 23 different operas totaling more than 100 performances as of the end of the current season.

In addition to bringing music to the audience, Plácido Domingo has been a backbone in the administration of the LA Opera. He served as an artistic consultant from 1984 to 2000, Artistic Director from 2000 to 2003, and has been the General Director since 2003. ‘This is fantastic news for LA Opera and indeed for all of Los Angeles,’ said Marc Stern, Chairman of LA Opera’s Board of Directors. ‘Not only is Plácido Domingo a world-class artist, he is an inspirational figure who has made LA Opera one of the most respected opera companies in the world.’

To discover the talents of young performers, Domingo also created the ‘Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Programme’ for the LA Opera. This programme provides opportunities for gifted young artists to perform in concerts and productions, as well as have comprehensive training to develop their skills further. He has also founded his own prominent international vocal competition, ‘Operalia’, to help launch the careers of promising young opera singers.

為此,我會選播一些以人神關係作為主題的樂曲,包括講述仙女與凡人結成夫妻

的仙凡戀,例如黃梅戲《天仙配》的主題音樂與粵樂〈銀河會〉和〈仙姬送子〉,

又或營造人神相交的意境,例如琴瑟合奏曲〈神人暢〉;又有敘述人如何恭迎神

仙或迎請佛祖上殿的情況,例如漢樂〈迎仙客〉和江南絲竹〈佛上殿〉;更有描

繪神仙活動,例如粵樂〈仙女牧羊〉,甚至神仙之間的交往酬酢,例如粵樂〈八

仙賀壽〉和潮樂〈十仙賀壽〉。這些樂曲定必叫大家驚嘆,人的想像力原來這麼

廣闊無垠。

採 風 覓 韻 走 南 北

另一方面,我們會走到西南和西北,懷著採風的心情,了解各地民風,前者包括

貴州、四川、雲南和聚居該地區的各個少數民族,大家既可以欣賞到中阮曲〈石

林夜曲〉、箏曲〈黔中賦〉、月琴協奏曲〈邊寨風情〉、宜賓民歌〈綉荷包〉

等,又可聽到以巴烏領奏的〈哈尼山歌〉、以洞巴獨奏的〈木腦縱歌〉、以馬布

領奏的〈彝風〉,還有描寫白族的月琴獨奏曲〈藪西調〉。

至於西北地區,由於範圍更廣闊,我會選播十多首樂曲,其中既有器樂,又有聲

樂。前者包括〈新疆姑娘〉、新疆木卡姆〈烏孜哈勒〉的選段、蒙古樂曲〈永恒

的魅力〉,以及西安、陝西和晉北的各類鼓樂;後者則有西藏、青海、甘肅的

民歌,還有由不作他選的朱崇懋和熊卿材分別演繹王洛賓經典名曲〈在銀色月光

下〉和〈掀起你的蓋頭來〉,冀與樂迷多採西北樂風。

氍 毹 妙 韻 四 方 傳

談到樂風,樂迷也會欣賞到一種關乎戲曲的樂風。各地戲曲在漫長的藝術進程

中,汲取了當地以至外地的民間音樂,加以演化,然後變成自有特色的戲曲音

樂。一些民樂家卻又把舞台的經典樂曲改編成一種新的民樂。這種互動帶給我們

很多珍貴曲目。例如,以二胡拉奏而不是由笛子吹奏的崑曲曲牌音樂〈朝元歌〉、

以二胡模仿京劇老生唱腔的〈珠簾寨〉、分別以古箏和二胡領奏的越劇《梁祝》

和《紅樓夢》主題曲,還有分別以尺八和笛子演繹的川劇《荊釵記》主題曲和婺

劇曲牌音樂〈三五七〉。上述每首都是源自戲曲,但又不再是戲曲的新音樂。

11月的「樂在神州」為你準備了豐富的中樂盛宴。可別錯失!

「樂在神州」在11月份帶領大家往三方面進發。首先,繼月前綜述

人類與大自然的諸般聯繫,我們進而探索人神之間的微妙關係。

The double bass is usually associated with its dark bass sound, but you can be sure it shines with brilliance in the hands of Edgar Meyer. Dubbed ‘the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument’ (The New Yorker), he appears with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong in its season opening concert to play two unmissable works from the repertoire: Bottesini’s Concerto No. 2 and Meyer’s own Concerto No. 1. The unique programme, conducted by Marco Boni, finishes with Boccherini’s Sinfonia, ‘La casa del diavolo’, and Schnittke’s Suite in Olden Style.

Xia Feiyun at 80 – A Tribute Concert

Not only is Xia Feiyun one of the most respected figures in the world of Chinese music today, he also has an intimate connection with Hong Kong, having served as Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra from 1992 to 1993. As he turns 80 this year, the Maestro himself takes the podium to celebrate his birthday. He conducts the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in classics, including Moonlight on the Spring River, Ambush from All Sides, Lovers’ Sorrow, and an excerpt from Taking Tiger Mountain by Stratagem as arranged by the Maestro himself. Sheng virtuoso Weng Zhenfa, Liu Ying on suona, gaohu soloist Wong Lok-ting, and percussionist Gao Shan join in the celebration. Do join them on this joyous occasion that showcases the Maestro’s musical achievements over the years.

夏飛雲八十大壽誌慶音樂會

備受中樂界尊敬的指揮泰斗夏飛雲,與香港關係匪淺。他曾於1992至1993年度出任香港中樂團駐團指揮,其後亦

經常與樂團合作。為慶祝大師八十高壽,中樂團再度誠邀大師同台,帶領演奏〈春江花月夜〉、〈十面埋伏〉、

〈雙聲恨〉等,更有大師改編《智取威虎山》的〈氣衝霄漢〉一曲,奏出經典樂曲的權威演繹。同來賀壽的還有

笙大師翁鎮發、嗩吶高手劉英、高胡演奏家黃樂婷和敲擊樂演奏家高山,送上獨奏精彩樂段,齊來為夏飛雲大師

的音樂成就慶賀喝采!

When I was little, I, like many other children, wished that Santa Claus would

come to my bedroom and bring me a surprise. Santa brought me my dreams until

I was a big boy. He gave me such sweet Christmas memories, and so I do the

same for my children today.

Christmas is the time for making wishes, sharing joy, celebrating with families,

and singing carols. In the past decade, I have enjoyed good concerts at our

annual ‘Christmas Concert in the Park’. It was an amazing moment when I heard

Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus sung by hundreds of music lovers together under the

blue sky and white clouds of Hong Kong, with the songbirds’ echoes from the

trees around the Park. This year, the harmonies from the Hong Kong Chamber

Wind Philharmonia, under the baton of Victor Tam, will fill the air at Kowloon Park

Piazza.

My wishes have changed over the years. This year, looking forward, I wish to hear

the beautiful voices of Sammy Chien (baritone) and the Hong Kong Children’s

Choir. I wish to hear them echoed by all of us. I also wish that Vanessa Wong’s

playing on Rhapsody in Blue will also bring us an unforgettable Christmas’ Eve.

And, most of all, I wish to see you all at our ‘Christmas Concert in the Park’!

感謝爸爸媽媽給予我難忘的聖誕回憶。

回想起,不但沒有感覺愚昧,反而是甜

蜜且帶點浪漫。聖誕老人不僅是小孩子

的期待,也是成人的純真化身。我承繼

了父母的「傳統」,把這種浪漫延續下

去。

聖誕老人的真偽不太重要,他的美麗在

於給予人夢想和冀盼。聖誕音樂也充滿

同樣的魔力。在平安夜之時,許個願

望、分享喜樂、與家人共聚、和知音人

一起高歌,必然是賞心樂事!

過去十載,每年的「聖誕園林音樂會」

我也樂在其中。在藍天白雲下,鳥語花

香的公園中,美妙的樂音在清新空氣中

飄盪,數百名觀眾一起高唱聖誕頌歌,

已經成為慶祝聖誕不可或缺的一環。我

期待今年平安夜的下午,在九龍公園廣

場,欣賞香港愛樂室樂管樂團在指揮譚

子輝領導下的樂聲,男中音錢深銘加上

香港兒童合唱團的動聽歌聲,還有鋼琴

家黃蔚然演奏的〈藍色狂想曲〉!好讓今

年的聖誕節更令人難忘。我還期待到時

候與你一起同唱〈哈利路亞大合唱〉哩!
