    Vocabulary

    Hajj - is the pilgrimage to Makkah.

    Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage.

    Arafah - is the name of a plane about three miles to the east-southeast of Makkah.

    Ihram - is the state of sanctification that pilgrims enter for Hajj and Umrah.

    Masjid al-Haram - the Sacred Masjid (Grand Mosque) in Makkah that encompassesthe Ka'bah.

    Safa and Marwah - two hills adjacent to Majsid al-Haram. Saiy proceeding between Mount Safa and Mount Marwah seven times.

    Miqaat the sites of Ihram Hajj.

    Tawaaf circumambulation of the Kabah.

    Idtiba uncovering ones right shoulder.

    Ramal walking briskly during the first 3 rounds of Tawaaf.

    Linguistically: Hajj means to aim for something great.

    Legalmeaning: Hajj is to visit a specified place, to perform specificactions in specific times.

    As for the specified place, it is the sacred House of Allah in Makkahand the mountain of Arafah. As for the specific times, it is the months of hajj that are mentionedin the coming paragraphs.

    , Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime upon one who satisfies sixconditions, they are:

    1) Islam

    2) Maturity

    3) Sanity

    4) Freedom

    5) One must possess the financial means - which is to havesufficient funds to spend upon oneself to travel to and from thejourney and also to buy or rent either for accommodation ortransport. These funds must be extra to the funds one has left forhis family members (during his absence) from his wife, young

    children and servant until he returns.6) One must have knowledge that Hajj is obligatory. This conditionis exclusively for those who become Muslim in the land of theenemy (dar al-harb).
