Wiping The Footgear (Khuffain)

Terminology's1. - wiping the wet hand over the area. For example, passing your hand
across part or all of your head, or wiping the top of the khuff.
Everybody except Shi'as say masah on khuff is not allowed due to the
Quranic ayah . They say it is carrying from .
2. - wetting the whole limb, in such a manner that some drops of water
fall off the limb.
4. / - khuff/khuffain. Leather socks. It has to be made from paak
leather not like pig skin etc.

6. - Normal socks :
(1) - thin socks. NOT allowed to do masah.
(2) - thick socks. The sahabah used to wear thick cotton socks. What isconsidered as thick socks, jurists have put three conditions: (1) walk onefarsakh. (2) waterproof (3) staying on the foot without anything tied. Sealskinsocks comes under this category.
7. - Open toe sandals. NOT allowed to do masah. When there is a
narration where the Prophet (s.a.w) did masah on it means
8. - boots or wellingtons. Salah is not allowed with shoes where one
cannot bend his toes.
9. - A person who is in his own locality or travels more than 48 miles and
intends to stay at a stipulated destination for more than 15 days.
10. - A person who travels more than 48 miles and intends to stay at a
stipulated destination for less than 15 days.

The Ruling Of Wiping The Khuffain

It is valid for both men and women to wipe the Khuff from the state of minor
impurity, even if the wiping is on something thick other than leather. It is the
same if the sole is made of leather or not.

Conditions That Permit The Wiping

Seven conditions are required to validate the wiping:
The first requires that they be worn after washing the feet. It is permissible to
wear the Khuff even before completing Wudhu, provided the person completes
the Wudhu before the occurrence of anything that invalidates it.
The second condition is they must cover the feet including the ankles.
The third condition is, one must be able to continuously walk in them. It is not
permissible for one to wipe on footgear that have been made from glass, wood or steel.

The fourth condition requires that each Khuff be free from a tear the size
equivalent to three of the smallest toes.
The fifth condition is they must hold to the feet without being tied.
The sixth condition is they must prevent water from reaching the skin.
The seventh condition is, the front part of the foot must be physically present, lengthbeing equivalent to three of the smallest fingers of the hand. If one is missing the
front part of his foot, he cannot wipe his Khuff even if the heel is present.
