The Glazen GFD series Fire Damper is designed to impede the spread of fire and/ or combustible products (e.g. smoke) through a slab or vertical airflow, masonry, lightweight partition or shaft wall opening to other fire compartments of an air conditioning system.

The design principle is based on an integral, interlocking stack of blades that closes by the release of a spring coil for horizontal mounted type, by gravity to form a tightly sealed barrier for vertical mounting type; when a fusible thermal link breaks at a set temperature

This range of Fire Dampers find its application in commercial building construction where ventilation, heating, cooling or air conditioning systems are employed.

Glazen Fire Dampers are certified by Standards Australia and meets AS 1682 and AS 1530 requirements. It also complies to the Singapore SS333:1996 and is listed under the PSB’s Product Listing Scheme.

GENERAL INFORMATION

DESCRIPTION

Glazen Horizontal Curtain Fire Damper is housed and guided in a press-formed and welded galvanized steel frame. The solid construction will ensure minimum distortion during transit, installation and operation. Resetting of curtain blades can be carried out from either side.

Adjustable mounting flanges hold the complete damper assembly securely in the floor/ wall opening, with the appropriate insulating material packed into the clearance space to meet installation Standards.

Damper Frame: Pressed-formed 1.6mm galvanized steel, fully welded at all four corners with 6 x 12mm slots to allow for variation in slab/ wall thickness

Damper Blades: Roll-formed 1.0mm (nominal) galvanized steel with special interlocking blades performing the blade pivoting function.

Mounting Angles: Roll-formed 2.0mm ‘right-angle’ brackets with 6 x 12 mm rounded slots at 150mm pitch to allow for variations in slab thickness.

Bearing: Blade “bearings” are roll-formed into blades, the blades interlock into each other, forming a concertina-type blade stack (curtain).

Fusible Link: The fusible link is a ‘once only’ used link.

Standard: Fusible Solder Link (70°C)

Optional: Quarzoid Bulb (68°C)

Access to Fusible Link: Form both sides of damper - for blade stack re-setting purposes or refitting of fusible link.

Mounting Hardware:

Zinc plated ¼ inch cup head bolts, nut and washer for each set of slotted mounting holes in frame &mounting angles.

Installation procedure

1. Remove one set of mounting flanges from one side of damper.

2. Insert damper into horizontal/ floor or wall opening.

3. Pack clearance between damper casing and slab opening with insulating material to meet above requirements.

4. Re-fit mounting flanges, nuts & bolts to damper and tighten, ensuring that flanges are butting tight against the slab and that damper is fitted squarely.

5. Ensure that damper closure is not impeded by any obstruction, incorrect installation (e.g. twisted, out of square), damage to damper or contamination to blade bearings (e.g. building dust).

6. Check proper closing operation.

7. When fitting duct, ensure that appropriate damper sleeve connections are used to allow proper duct ‘breakaway’ in a fire situation.

8. Ensure that adequate access panel is fitted to duct to allow easy maintenance to damper.

IMPROTANT: the installation of Fire Dampers must comply with the requirements of AS 1682, Part 2 and Singa-pore Standards SS333 and CP-13. Deviation from any Clause of the Standards must be approved by a Regula-tory Authority!

Basic Regulations:

⇒ Dampers shall be installed in the fully opposition only! No intermediate blade position is allowed! ⇒ Damper frame (casing) must be fully penetrate the slab/ wall opening. ⇒ Curtain of damper blades must be fully contained within the penetrated slab/ wall element. ⇒ Clearance between slab or wall opening and damper body (frame) must be such as to allow adequate insu-

lating material, PLUS expansion factor for fire situation. Recommended clearance formulae: 5mm + 0.5% of linear length dimension (width/ height).

⇒ The clearance space between the damper and the penetrated wall or slab opening must be fully packed with approved insulating material to prevent free flow of combustible materials (e.g. smoke). Material must maintain fire integrity up to 1000°C.

⇒ Mounting flanges must cover the clearance (2 x clearance). Contractor may have to fit larger flanges if clear-ance exceeds the recommended sizes.

⇒ Ensure that access to damper is provided for maintenance purposes (e.g. access panel in duct). ⇒ Install damper according to label instruction re air-flow direction.

Product improvement is a continuous effort at R Glazen. As such the specifications are subject to change without prior notice.

FOR THE ENGINEER,

Fire Dampers installed shall be of design and construction as the GFD-CV and GFD-CH Series supplied by R Glazen which meet the requirements of Australian Standards AS 1682 - Part 1 & 2 and AS 1530 - Part 4 and Singapore Standards SS:333.

The damper frame shall be of press-formed and welded galvanized steel construction to minimise distortion during transit, installation and operation. The interlocking damper blades shall be of roll-formed galvanized steel construction to guarantee accuracy and consistent closing operation.

Each fire damper shall have a 2hours/ 4hours fire protection rating, 70°C fusible link, and shall include a PSB

label in accordance with PSB’s labeling procedures.

GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS

Operation:

Damper closing is initiated by the breaking of the fusible link, when temperature in the air stream reaches the rated thermal limit. The GFD-4H blade stack will consequently unfold by the release of the spring coil and form a curtain; the GFD-4V blade stack will consequently unfold and form a curtain, impeding the spread of fire and/ or combustible products to other compartments of the air handling system.

Resetting of curtain blades can be carried out from either sides.

Damper Closing Temperature:

Standard “solder” fusible link: 70°C

Quartzoid Bulb: 68°C

Maximum Air Velocity:

IMPORTANT! Curtain - type fire damper should not be used in high velocity applications. Damper may not close due to build-up of static pressure.

Max. Velocity:

19.5m/s (max. static pressure inside the duct with the damper in closed position is 925 Pa)

Air Flow Orientation:

Orientation of damper installation should be as per recommended air-flow direction (label affixed to damper frame). Glazen Curtain Fire Damper may be installed for bi-directional air flow, if necessary.

Standards Approval Listing:

Glazen GFD-4CH and GFD-4CV Curtain Dampers have passed the test to meet the Leakage and Fire Integrity requirements of AS 1530 - Part 4 and AS 1682 - Part 1, with dampers exposed to 1100°C for 2 hours and 4

hours periods.

Glazen GFD Curtain Dampers are also tested to comply to Air Leakage, Closing Reliability and Fire Integrity requirements of Singapore Standards SS:333, and is listed under PSB’s Product Listing Scheme.

∗ all values are recommendations from experimental tests carried out by CSIRO.
