From the EditorIn a desperate anti-ageing attempt, I chose to fly east

to Vancouver on my birthday. I thus managed to stay at the same age a little longer, even if this achievement lasted a mere 18 hours.

One cherishes youth, for its inexhaustible energy and bravery towards adventure. The cover story of this issue of the Medical Faculty News features young members of our Faculty – our undergraduate students. In these impressive stories, you will see how many of our students can still pursue their interests in sports and the arts with outstanding results, and engage in community or humanitarian projects, despite the taxing curricula.

Recent research and clinical achievements, namely successes in the Research Grants Council’s Earmarked Research Grants and the first combined heart-and-liver transplant, are also highlighted in this issue.

Indeed, so much is going on in the Faculty that there is hardly a moment for a siesta. I wonder whether the glacier photo can help beat the summer heat.

Until next time, happy reading!

From the EditorDean’sMessage

“P lants are shaped by cultivation and men by education …… We are born weak, we need strength; we are born totally unprovided, we need aid; we are born stupid, we need judgement. Everything we do not have at our birth and which we need when we are

grown is given us by education.” (Jean Jacques Rousseau, Emile)

Like Rousseau, the Medical Faculty takes the importance of education to its heart. Education, not merely on medical and scientific knowledge and expertise, but a holistic education for our students, is the very essence of our sacred mission to nurture competent, empathetic, and ethical healthcare professionals.

At a philosophical level, the Faculty is dedicated to nurture minds that are both educated and inquisitive, minds that would strive to understand and analyze the phenomenal existence of life and the world, and make rational dialectics and sound judgements. This can only be achieved by a whole-person education which cultivates young minds to appreciate the beauty of diversity, and at the same time adopt a salubrious approach in determining an appropriate course of action in the pursuit of truth.

The advent of modern science and the increasing sophistication of technology in the present era might not have made multi-talented masters such as Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo da Vinci. However, a holistic analytical perspective, an all-roundedness in knowledge, an unfaltering passion, and incessant creativity remain essential qualities in the pursuit of excellence. The Medical Faculty has all along tried its very best to cultivate these qualities in our students, who are deemed to be future leaders in society.

Apart from their studies in subjects related to science and healthcare, we encourage students to participate in extra-curricular activities to fully develop their talents in arts, culture, and sports. We also encourage them to participate in local and overseas community and humanitarian activities, and offer such opportunities as part of our curriculum. We hope to broaden our students’ horizon through this diversified learning experience, so that they will ultimately grow to become mature professionals ready to face the challenges in their future careers.

Opening Up to LifeStudents from the Medical Faculty shine in many other areas besides their academic studies. Here, sports stars, music and drama enthusiasts, and committed volunteers discuss how these ‘outside’ interests have added to their all-round development and enhanced the preparation towards their future careers.

Sporting ChanceO ne medical student with a comprehensive

passion for sport is Michelle Cheung (MBBS IV ), HKU’s Sportswoman of the

Year (2009-10). Among Michelle’s accomplishments is a talent for badminton, with recent international achievements including first runner-up in the ladies singles at the European Junior Badminton Championships and a bronze medal at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. Michelle also draws attention on the athletics track, holding the second fastest time for the 800 metres in Hong Kong. And during her residence at St John’s College, she was an active hockey, softball, basketball and squash player.

How does the super-fit scholar manage so many pastimes so well? To Michelle, all such activities are a complement to her medical studies rather than a distraction. “I truly love both sport and medicine,” she said. “So I find they go hand-in-hand, helping me to relieve stress as well as transferring my energies and making me focus effectively.”

KayC teo (MBBS 2009) is another high performer. He won the CP Fong Gold Medal in Medicine in 2009, but at the same time as flying high in his medical studies KayC kept up his keen interest in a variety of sports. An experienced dragon boat paddler who has represented Hong Kong and participated in the Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships, KayC founded the HKU Dragon Boat Team in 2008 and has been its coach since the team’s establishment. He is also a keen rower, soccer player and was an active member in Wei Lun Hall.

KayC is a firm believer in striving for excellence in every area of life and the particular benefits that sports can bring. Dragon boating, for example, can boost not only physical and mental endurance but social skills as well through the teamwork required on board. “I believe that people can achieve anything if they put their mind to it,” KayC said. “Always reach for the stars. Even if you fail, at least you’ll reach the moon.”

For Joyce lai (MBBS III), the opportunity to take a gap year from the Faculty in her second year helped her achieve a childhood dream – to experience life as a professional skater. Joyce joined Disney on Ice and toured all over Europe by bus, by train and even by private plane! She sometimes even had to travel up to two cities and perform as many as 14 shows within one week. During rehearsals, she had to undertake 10-12 hours of intense skating practice. From this, she gained many life-changing experiences that she feels will be invaluable for her personal and professional development as a doctor-to-be.

One of the most significant lessons Joyce learnt was the importance of professionalism. “In a performance, it doesn’t matter what happens backstage, the second you cross the curtain, you have to be professional and go on with a smile,” she explained. “Just like being a doctor. We have to deliver high quality care to all our patients despite our personal problems or when we are simply having a bad day.”

Creative Touch

O n the creative front, life at HKU has assisted Elaine lee (MBBS II) and Patrick hung (BChinMed III) to pursue their interest in music, while year-one nursing students Fannie

Chung and Jessica wong have found a second calling in the theatre. All agreed that it was important for students to undertake additional activities that allowed them to gain broader perspectives and appreciate different ways of life.

Elaine has been a member of the New Tune Chinese Orchestra since secondary school and recently received First Class awards as a member of both the Bamboo Flute team and Hulusi team at the First International Chinese National Musical Instrument Series Invitation Tournament 2009. She believes pursuing interest can definitely assist her studies and career outlook. After years of orchestral training, for example, Elaine has learnt how to take each task seriously. “I have been trained to stay focused and seek perfection,” she said, “because one minor mistake could spoil the whole concert.”

In Patrick’s case, the former Chairperson of HKU Chinese Medicine Society, trumpet player and gospel music group member of HKU Christian Fellowship, sees student life as an opportunity to learn outside the classroom as well as in. “At this point in our lives, we should step out and gain exposure to different things while we are energetic enough to do so,” said Patrick, who also plays bass guitar and composes for his band, Synergy.

Fannie and Jessica are members of HKU Drama Society, participating as an actress and director respectively. Fannie made her first appearance on stage at the Society’s annual production in 2009. Since then, she has developed a great interest in acting and took a leading role in the Society’s summer performance in July. Meanwhile, her classmate Jessica has moved from assistant stage manager to directing and script-writing. Both not only feel that they have learnt to appreciate drama more but also fully appreciate the importance of teamwork.

Equally significant, the students have found that reflections inspired by their dramatic activities have had a powerful impact on their view of nursing. Fannie explained how working in the theatre had changed her: “I needed to play someone who was mute. As I learnt about the character, I came to understand that every single person has a story to tell and we should really try to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes before making any judgements.” In addition, as every play touches the audience’s heart and influences them in a special way, this also further strengthens their goals to become nurses who can make a difference.

Reaching Out to

the World

O ther Faculty students have found their view of life transformed by visits to underprivileged areas in Asia. For his final-year elective, Philip Kam (MBBS

2010) volunteered to work at the Mae Tao Clinic, a non-profit medical institution situated on the Thai-Burmese border. Set up 20 years ago, the clinic provides free medical care to around 100,000 Burmese refugees and migrant workers each year and is now internationally recognised for this pioneering work. Philip spent a month rotating to various departments, having a glimpse of what it was like to practise medicine in an underdeveloped area.

“As a medical student, I gained valuable clinical experience, especially in treating infectious diseases and relying on basic tools to make diagnoses,” Philip said. “What had an even greater impact, though, was seeing for the first time the effect of politics and poverty on health, and the dynamics between international, non-governmental organisations and their community-based counterparts.”

Witnessing poverty at first hand can certainly open up one’s view of life, according to adrian Fung (MBBS III), who participated with other local university students in a trip to Laos. During his visit, which was organised by the World Vision Youth Education Programme, Adrian realised how easy it was for medical students to focus solely on the disease rather than seeing patients as people. “We must not forget our aim to relieve patients’ suffering and understand what they really need,” he said. “We may not be able to save everyone, but we have to do our best for each patient.”

Service from the Heart

A nother group of medical students, vivien tsui (MBBS IV), hidy Chan (MBBS IV), luke lee (MBBS IV) and Denise So (MBBS II), have joined up with a number of local and international students to establish a non-profit

organisation to provide education opportunities in developing countries.

The quartet founded Project Little Dream with 12 other university students from Hong Kong, the US, the UK and Australia. Last December, the organisation successfully arranged its first service trip, taking 68 volunteers from different universities around the globe to Takeo, a village in Cambodia. There, they spent a month building a community school. In addition to constructing the school, which can accommodate over 200 students, volunteers taught and helped to refurbish an orphanage.

Vivien, vice-president of Project Little Dream, said planning and implementing the projects had provided her with valuable insight. “Just as the organisation’s name suggests, we are trying to make a dream come true through our small contribution. Despite our lack of experience and language barriers, we succeeded in building the school, teaching us to serve from the heart and to think from a wider perspective. Taking part in the project really humbled and inspired us to contribute what we can to those in need.”

Project Little Dream is currently organising its second service trip, which is due to take place in December 2010. By sharing their hands-on experience, the student organisers hope to stimulate more people to take part in such activities and increase fellow students’ awareness of poverty and other global issues. For more information about Project Little Dream, please visit www.littledream.org.

RGC Research Funding Success Continues

T hanks to the dedicated efforts of a team of almost 70 medical, nursing, and para-medical staff, Hong Kong’s first combined heart-and-liver transplant operation was accomplished

successfully at Queen Mary Hospital on August 21, 2010. In a series of surgical operations that lasted more than 20 hours, a 27-year-old woman with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy received a heart

and liver simultaneously w h i l e g i v i n g h e r ow n u s a b l e l i v e r t o a 6 2 -year-old man suffering from l iver cancer. The complicated operations, carried out by surgeons from the Department of Surgery and colleagues

at Queen Mary Hospital, required teamwork and coordination at all fronts and represented a major undertaking in the history of clinical service in Hong Kong. It involved four cardiac anaesthesiologists, five cardiac surgeons, six liver anaesthesiologists, seven liver surgeons, and more than 40 nurses. Not only that two patients have been saved, the event has also provided an important opportunity to promote organ donation. As the HKSAR Chief Executive The Honourable Donald Tsang Yam-kuen has written in his letter of commendation, “The team’s professionalism, courage and strive for excellence have inspired the whole community.”

Education Matters • Medical Faculty News 7

EducationMatters

F rom September 2010, there will be a new addition to the undergraduate curriculum at HKU – the Common Core Curriculum. The move aims to provide a key common learning experience for all HKU students and to broaden their horizons beyond their chosen fields of study. This means that Medical Faculty students will have the opportunity to

widen the scope of their education beyond their professional training in human biology and disease management.

The goals of the Common Core Curriculum are:

• to enable students to develop a broader perspective and a critical understanding of the complexities and interconnectedness of the issues they are confronted within their everyday lives

• to cultivate students’ appreciation of their own culture and other cultures, and the inter-relatedness among cultures

• to enable students to see themselves as members of global as well as local communities and to play an active role as responsible individuals and citizens in these communities

• to enable students to develop the key intellectual skills that will be further enhanced in their disciplinary studies

Students can select from four Areas of Inquiry (AoIs) in the Common Core Curriculum, namely “Scientific and Technological Literacy”, “Humanities”, “Global Issues” and “China: Culture, State and Society”. Each AoI has a conceptual framework with key themes addressing the aforementioned goals.

The Common Core Curriculum will encourage students to focus on issues of profound significance to humankind. It will enable them to acquire core intellectual skills and to uphold the key values of a responsible individual and citizen, thus truly realising HKU’s motto, 明德格物 or mingde gewu, meaning “illustrious virtue and the investigation of things”.

Embracing the Wider View – Common Core Curriculum

Sapientia et Virtus, the Latin motto of HKU, is best translated ‘Wisdom and Virtue’. Sapientia is equivalent to gewu(格物), and virtus to mingde(明德). Both in Chinese and European tradition, the function of a university is not simply to inculcate knowledge, but to train young people to become responsible members of society.

Outing to Kadoorie Farm & Dinner at Tai Wing WahAbout 70 alumni and their families went on an outing to Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden on December 13, 2009. The Kadoorie Farm is a conservation and education centre located on a picturesque hillside in the New Territories. It is also a unique place to understand the rich biodiversity of nature and conservation methods. Youngsters were excited to visit the animals there while adults were happy to see a more tranquil side of Hong Kong. Following the excursion, participants enjoyed a traditional Chinese dinner at the Tai Wing Wah Restaurant(大榮華酒樓)in Yuen Long.

HKUMAA Spring Dinner at Lin Heung Kui The Association organised its second Spring Dinner at Lin Heung Kui(蓮香居)on March 5, 2010, following the successful inaugural event in 2009. The dinner was packed with more than 250 alumni, family members and friends, and the evening filled with laughter and sharing among different generations of our HKU medical family. Many distinguished guests, including University Council Chairman Dr Leong Che Hung, Vice-Chancellor Professor Tsui Lap Chee, Under Secretary for Food and Health Professor Gabriel Leung and Director of Health Dr Lam Ping Yan, and the Association’s Founding President Professor Rosie Young, and Immediate Past President Professor Lee Kin Hung attended the dinner.

Magical Encounter: Qin & TeaOn May 15, 2010, the Association held a unique cultural event at Lock Cha Tea House in Hong Kong Park which attracted about 60 alumni, their families and friends. The event comprised an introduction and Gu Qin recitals by Dr Tse Chun Yan (MBBS 1973), followed by a tea talk and demonstration by Dr Wayne Hu. In addition to gaining a better understanding of the history and background of these two important elements in traditional Chinese culture, participants also enjoyed the music, freshly brewed Chinese tea and a variety of vegetarian dim-sums.

Medic Class 2010 Graduation DinnerAziz Kam (MBBS 2010)

On June 12, 2010, the graduating class got together to celebrate and show their

appreciation towards the teachers who had guided and supported them over the past

five years. Professors, honoured guests, fancy name tags with newly

appointed titles, fine wines and food all made the night

an unforgettable occasion.

On behalf of the organising committee, I would

like to thank everyone who attended the

dinner. Our gratitude also goes to those

talented classmates who performed on stage

and, of course, our fellow organisers who

contributed so much in time and effort to

make this event become a reality. Last but

not least, we would like to thank the Faculty

for the huge amount of support it provided

for the entire proceedings.

Orientation Programme 2010 – “Heart-to-Heart”Executive Committee, Medical Society, HKUSU

E ach individual can be considered independent, but the relations

between people can be so intricate or closely related that, in

reality, everyone is also linked together. This “heart-to-heart” idea

was the underlying theme for the Medical Faculty’s Orientation

Programme, which took place on August 7-10, 2010. The

programme aimed at fostering relationships among all

students at the Faculty, as well as inspiring them to work

together and strive for the same goals.

On behalf of the Organising Committee 2010, we would like to

express our gratitude to all who contributed to the orientation’s

success, in particular the teachers who came to the camp to show

us support. We hope the programme served as a memorable start for

all freshmen in their studies at the Faculty.

community. The newly launched book contains a rich collection of fascinating stories from

old editions, including the pre-war era. Those interested in obtaining a copy can contact:

“Superpass” events have long been one of the unique aspects of HKU

culture, seeking to inspire students to work hard at their studies and pass

their examinations with flying colours. This year, instead of a lunch or dinner, the

Nursing Society held the first Superpass Gathering at Fan Pui Garden on April

12, 2010. The theme was “Enhancing Relationships”. Fan Pui Garden was decked

out like a carnival, featuring various fun booths and games, and a number of

eminent teachers, including Dean of Medicine Professor SP Lee and Head of the

School of Nursing Professor Sophia Chan, officiated at the opening ceremony.
