Dimensiones de la globalización
Dimensión cultural
“Globalization refers to the fact that more
people across large distances become
connected in more and different ways, They
can become connected very simple by
doing or experiencing the same sort of
thing”. (Lechner & Boli 2008).
Por ejemplo, comer “Sushi” (Comida
japonesa).

Dimensiones de la globalización
Dimensión económica
“Globalization is the closer integration of the countries and
peoples of the world ...brought about by the enormous reduction
in transportation and communication costs, and the breaking
down of artificial barriers to the flow of
goods, services, capital, knowledge, and people across
borders”. (Stiglitz 2002).
Por ejemplo, muchos mercados de pescado en el mundo dependen
del mercado japonés, pues el atún es pescado en otros países y
transportado a otros lugares del mundo.
El 78% de los países del mundo tiene
una economía de libre mercado.Curso: “Otros actores de la política” Universidad EAFIT Camilo Tamayo Gómez - The University of Huddersfield
Dimensiones de la globalización
Dimensión política
“Globalization is the process by which
capitalism expands across the globe as
powerful economic actors seek profit in a global
market and impose their rules everywhere. At
the same time globalization affects categories
such as nation, state and political
independency, creating a new political order
around the globe” (Bestor 2010; Garrett 2009)
Por ejemplo, como diferentes organizaciones
internacionales demandan mejores condiciones para los
trabajadores de Sushi.

Dimensiones de la globalizaciónDimensión simbólica
“Globalization is a process through which
most cultures progressively become the
same, mostly through the spread of western
and American culture, whose main
characteristic is to emphasize
consumption. Such a culture is spread
through the mass media (Henderson 2009;
Rodrik 2011).
Por ejemplo, la relación entre comer sushi y
sentirse “play” o “gomelo”.
Narrativas, representaciones y significados.
Curso: “Otros actores de la política” Universidad EAFIT Camilo Tamayo Gómez - The University of Huddersfield
1. Reconfiguración del tiempo y del espacio (Bauman 2000).
2. Nuevos territorios (Por ejemplo EU o MERCOSUR).
3. Migración y nuevos flujos de personas (Sklair 2008).
4. Vida transnacional (Vertovec 2010) y reconfiguración de categorías como
clase, identidad, género o ciudadanía (Stevenson 2009).
5. Último paso del capitalismo “This convoluted concept simply conveys the
idea that, under conditions of globalization, territory becomes less relevant to
human relations” (Gereffi 2010; Taylor 2011; Monroe 2010).
6. Impactos de la tecnología de la información. “Globalization involves a
process of speeding up, or increasing velocity, of human activities and
relations" (Appadurai 2010; Sassen 2009).
6 elementos claves en estas dimensiones

Globalización comoproceso social
“Globalization can be thought of a process (or set of processes) which embodies a
transformation in the spatial organization of social relations and transactions –
assessed in terms of their extensity, intensity, velocity and impact – generating
transcontinental or interregional flows and networks of activity, interaction, and the
exercise of power” (Held 2009).

Globalización comoprocesoeconómico
“Globalization refers to the reduction and removal of barriers between national
borders in order to facilitate the flow of goods, capital, services and labour...
although considerable barriers remain to the flow of labour” (IMF 2010).

Globalización comoprocesopolítico
“Globalization is the era of multilayered governance. Power is differentially exercised at
the local, national, regional, or global level. In addition, non-state actors, such as
corporations, public and private non-governmental organizations (such as human rights
or environmental organizations), what is often called the global civil society, also
demand seats at the table when treaties are negotiated.” (Monnier 2011).
Globalization as a political
process
Provides new forms of
Citizenship
Dissemination of Democracy
Encourage the creation of Sub-state and supra-
state institutions
Reduce the importance of nation - states.

Globalization as an ideology
Globalization is About the
Liberalization and Global
Integration of Markets
Globalization is Inevitable and
Irreversible
Globalization Benefits
Everyone.Market Capitalism
= Democracy
Nobody is in Charge of
Globalization
“The ideology of capitalist globalization is promoted by international corporate
interests. The ideology of globalization values efficient and profitable production.
Multinational corporations search for the cheapest wage labour to produce a
particular quantity in a particular amount of time. Multinationals also look at the
where they can make the most profits in a short term” (Kear 2011).
Globalización comoideología

Globalización tipo Dr Jekyll
“Globalization is westernization
by another name. It undermines the
cultural integrity of other cultures
and is therefore
repressive, exploitative and harmful
to most people in most places”
(Lechner & Boli 2008).
“Globalization is lopsided
because it imposes the
political, economical and cultural
standards of one region in the
world on all other regions” (Ohmae
2010).
Curso: “Otros actores de la política” Universidad EAFIT Camilo Tamayo Gómez - The University of Huddersfield
Globalización tipo Dr Jekyll
“Globalization accelerate the
clash of civilizations,where
people’s cultural and religious
identities will be the primary source
of conflict in the post-Cold War
world” (Huntington 2007).
“Globalization is unequal, because
post-industrial societies are more
advanced and overall benefit more
from globalization while remaining
pastoral / horticultural and agricultural
societies isolated” (Henderson 2009).
Curso: “Otros actores de la política” Universidad EAFIT Camilo Tamayo Gómez - The University of Huddersfield
Globalización tipo Dr Jekyll
“Globalization undermines
national identity by promoting
identifications “from below,” as in
the case of local nationalism (e.g.
ethnic groups demanded
independence) or “from above,” as
in the case of identifications are
based on transnational loyalties
(e.g. some groups of
Kurds, Muslims, Jews or Catholics)“Globalization undermines the
state, because globalization actively
promotes the demise of state sovereignty
by agreeing to dismantle national policies
on trade, financial regulations, labour
protections and welfare guarantees in the
name of global competition.
