Aim and Objectives
To provide understanding on the fundamental physics of ionising and non-ionising radiation used for medicaldiagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes. Topics addressed include an introduction to radiation and radiation
sources, radiation production methods and characteristics and radiation-matter interaction processes
(electromagnetic and charged particles).
Course Syllabus
Introduction to Radiation.Radiation Types and Fields. Relevant quantities and units.
Structure of matter (atomic and nuclear).
Part I - Ionising radiationX-ray production physics
Nuclear Instability and radioactive decay
Interaction of radiation and mater: photons
Interaction of radiation and mater: charged particles
Concepts of fluence, exposure, kerma and absorbed dose
Part II - Non-Ionising radiationAcoustic radiation (ultrasound physics). Electromagnetic: Radio-frequency, Microwaves, Infra-Red, Visible,

Academic education: PhD in Imaging Sciences (University of London, Kings College School of Medicine andDentistry, 2006). Master of Science (MSc) in Physics Engineering/Nuclear and Applied Physics (FCUL, 2001).
Graduate in Physics Engineering (FCT-UNL, 1997).
Professional activities: Lecturer in higher education since 1996 is currently assistant professor at FEUCP.Coordinator of Master Course in Clinical Engineering at FEUCP. Lectures courses on Medical Physics, Medical
Imaging, Technologies for Diagnostic and Therapy, Dosimetry and Radiation Protection, amongst other. Research interests: Clinical implementation of medical technologies with focus on performance assessmentand optimisation of digital technologies in mammography and CT. Other fields of interest include radiation
protection policies and operational procedures in healthcare, promotion of public awareness for the use of
radiations in medicine, continuous education of healthcare professionals and dissemination of medical physics
and biomedical/clinical engineering profiles in healthcare.
Taxiarchis Sakellaris | Lecturer |[email protected](Office n 1333; T: 21 426 98 15)
Academic education: PhD in Medical Physics (University of Patras, School of Medicine, Department of MedicalPhysics, Greece, 2008). Master of Science (MSc) in Medical Physics (University of Patras, School of Medicine,
Department of Medical Physics, Greece, 2003). Graduate in Physics (University of Athens, Department ofPhysics, Greece, 2001)
Professional activities: Currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at FEUCP.Research interests: Development of Monte Carlo Simulation Models and associated Toolkits for DigitalMammography for optimization studies and pedagogical purposes.
Lecturing Methodology
Lectures: aimed at to introducing the fundamental/theoretical concepts associated to each topic.Praticals: focused on practicing the application of theoretical concepts into practical situations involvingthe use of radiations in medicine. Scientific papers will be used as reference material.
Labs & Workshops (1 experimental and 1 computational). Field visit (research labs / hospitals).
Assessment Methodology
Type: Continuous assessment (AV) and Final Exam
Final mark = 0,40 AC + 0,60 Mx (EF; ER) ; (pass criteria: FM > 10,0 val AC > 8,0 val EF ou ER 10,0)
AC: Average mark of continuous evaluation - 4 best marks will be considered from: 3 Tests 1 Lab work report 1 Field Visit report
If AC < 8 val student fails the course and enrolls again on the following academic year. The test mark
(continuous evaluation) is not transferred from one year to the following year. Lab mark is transferred for 1
academic year.
EF: Mark of Final Exam
ER: Mark of Exam Recurso
Marks: AC, Tests and Exams rounded to 1 decimal place. Final mark: rounded to units.
