Irregular Verbs – Just memorize
します するきます くる
Vowel/ Regular (-ru ending verbs: Group II)
Two types: -iru , -eru For both of these, remove the る ending, and add the suffix.
- た - ない- なかった
e.g. taberu tabeta okiru okita
Consonant/Semi-regular (-u ending verbs: Group I)
Four groups:
Past tense conjugation
Negative/past negative
m, n, b group
Remove -mu, -nu, -bu,
Add -nda
Remove -u
Add –anai or
-anakatta
k, g group Remove –ku-, -gu
Add –ita or -ida
w, r, t group Remove –(w)u, -ru, -tsu
Add -tta
s group Remove su
Add -shita
The Exceptions to the Rules
あります/あるPresent Form: nai – ない (not anai)
Past form: nakatta – なかった行 ( い ) きます/行 ( い ) く
Past Form: itta – いった (not iita)
た form song(To the tune of “Oh, Christmas Tree”)

Basically you will be deleting the です . Remember that ~ くありません /~ くありませんでした are formal forms. All of the informal are listed below.
Plain form of copula verb ( です)

This is not covered in your book so listen up. The informal form of です for present and past are the following:
Remember that the ~ じゃありません~じゃありませんでした are formal forms.
Plain form ofな -adjectives

りっぱだ

りっぱじゃなかった
Remember this is the same as the copula. Also the ~ じゃありません~じゃありませんでした are formal forms.
て -form and ください
Remember in the last chapter we spent a lot of time learning how to conjugate plain verbs into the past tense. In particular, the distinction between う and る verbs?
Well that will now pay off!!!! To make the て -form, you will change the た/だ to て/で , as in:
たべた たべてのんだ のんで
What about the negative?
This is simple too.
Take the casual negative present tense form and add で
たべない たべないでのまない のまないで
