Hot topics the FCN editorial staff is following now… • FSMA: Ten provisions from the FDA Food Safety

Modernization Act were to be published on Jan. 4, including the Foreign Supplier Verifi cation Program, Standards for Produce Safety and the designation of certain foods as high-risk for enhanced tracking requirements. More FSMA changes are mandated for July, including new Preventive Control Requirements. Also, the food industry is keeping an eye on how FDA handles its many new enforcement authorities.

• Chemical Contaminants: Arsenic in juice, Bisphenol A in food packaging and a push to reexamine additives under the Generally Recognized as Safe program … It’s not just FSMA that has FDA busy.

• HIMP: The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service’s proposal to expand its HACCP-based Inspection Models Project (HIMP). Meanwhile, USDA also is preparing to start enforcing its new rule to identify six additional strains of E. coli as adulterants.
