Farming in AustriaGenerally small family farms (average 18ha), half of them have an additional

income, number of small farms is decreasing

Small farms are more likely to survive• if growing organically • If they do on-farm processing of food (need of working power, comply with

European hygiene regulations - high investments!)• if trying new ways of collaboration with other producers or consumers

(need of external support!)• if getting higher prices• if national and European subsidies system (CAP) changes (becomes linked

to working hours)



The dominance of big enterprises hampers food sovereignty.The Raiffeisen-groupowns most of Austria‘s agriculturalstorehouses and the shops related to them. Thus, they controlabout 2 thirds of the agricultural harvest as well as theavailability of seeds and fertilizers. It also owns the majority of

Our aims: share our joy on local food, encourage people to eat more localgrown food, provide information on sustainability issues related to fooproduction and consumption.

We sell organic foodfrom the farmers around: People order weekly via ouweb shop, they pick up their food the following friday. Selling foodmeans that we get in touch with people (producers and consumers), thathere is space to talk about products, farmers or food sovereignty andthat people get connected …

We sharefood, recipes, seeds, growing methods … …

We build networksas we collaborate with other local and (inter)nationalinitiatives.



The European Food Movement



Food Sovereignty

… is the right of peoples to sufficient, healthy,affordable and culturally appropriate food, producedthrough ecologically sound and socially sustainable

methods, and their right to define their own food andagriculture systems. Food is no longer treated as acommodity, but as a right to people.



Aim of the forum: make visible the big number of peopledevoted to the idea of food sovereignty, strengthen the

existing network and support the different groups andtheir demands.



The Nyeleni-Forum (Krems, August 2011)

About 380 delegates from all over Europe joined the Forum, 180 people

have been organizing the Forum.Networks involved in the preparation: La Via Campesina, Friends of the

Earth Europe, the European Attac Network, the World March of

Women, national platforms for food sovereignty (Hungary, Belgium,Spain, UK-food group).

Besides the overall agreement on food sovereignty, the forum showed

the controversial positions of the people/groups/countries.
