When Gabriel Gay was little, he loved video games, gangsters, and Ninja Turtles. So he put together a story that is like a video game, with levels, tricks, and bosses to beat in order to reach the next level. Us, Our HistoryHumanity was born approximately 150,000 years ago, in the heart of Africa. Then, slowly but surely, man explored and colonized all the lands. At fi rst hunter-gatherers, humans later invented tools and became farmers and breeders. They took shelter in caves, and then they learned to build houses and stayed in them. Next, writing was born in the Middle East, China, and South America. Far-fl ung cousins separated from one another, everyone founded civilizations. Soon the fi rst scientists asked questions about the world and the universe. Inventions arrived, one after the other. Over the course of several centuries, humans who had lived isolated on continents, without any contact, learned that they form one big family: us, humans. Those who inhabit our world today.

With big, beautiful images and simple text, this is the story

that Us, Our History, tells us.

Iela Mari passed away in January, at the age of 82, but we know very well that those who charm children never die. She started her career in 1968, with the mythic Red Balloon, a book revolutionary for its restraint. Her credo since then has been to draw attention to shapes, in reaction to the barrage of images on television. For almost a half-century, she has never deviated from this. An exhibition of her work will be held in Tokyo in November 2014.

RoundWhat’s round? A lot of things are! The stars we see in the sky, but also the planet on which we live. Some things we play with, and other things that make us afraid. Certain foods we eat, and of course, the plate on which they’re served. We are surrounded by slices and spheres that make up rounds. To help us fi nd them, name them, and then, why not, draw them, this book offers some insight, with clear examples.

With this book, previously unpublished in France but fi rst out

in 1970 in Italy, l’école des loisirs pays homage to Iela Mari.

When she began to illustrate this famous tale by the Brothers

Grimm, Gerda Muller let herself be guided by the past. Since she especially loves Brueghel, she chose to pay homage to him by way of some visual quotes: a watermill here, a banquet beneath a thatch roof there, a windmill at the summit of a hill. With warm colors and Gerda’s precise lines, this story of outcasts who triumph over the bandits takes on a particularly mischievous dimension.

The Town Musicians of BremenToo old to work, a donkey is condemned by his master to die. The donkey decides to run off and become a musician in Bremen. Along the way, he encounters a dog, a cat, and a rooster, who are also too old… They will spend the rest of their lives among friends and fanfare! In 1819, the Brothers Grimm published this story about exiles who take their revenge on a society who no longer wants them. It’s not too surprising that this tale still resonates today.

A story where strength is found in numbers and where the

weakest win, thanks to friendship.

Thibaud Guyon was fascinated by the trajectory of Nicéphore Niépce, this fantastic researcher, and he dug into the subject, helped by the latest discoveries: an original of the fi rst photo that was found, a letter that was recently published, plus a museum set up in one part of the house Nicéphore was born in.

AGE7+

The Very First Photo With his older brother Claude, Nicéphore Niépce began by perfecting a combustion engine, the Pyréolophore. Next they tried improving the fountains at Versailles, cultivating indigo, and lithography. But the project that Nicéphore now holds closest to his heart is a box, invented in the 4th century B.C., that is called the camera obscura. With the help of science, chemistry, and the sun, he is in the process of inventing something that isn’t yet called photography. The world doesn’t know anything about it. Clarisse, however, the daughter of the house domestic workers, has been entrusted with the secret.
