The French Revolution was a revolution in France from 1789 to
1799. It led to the end of the monarchy. King Louis XVI was
executed in 1793. The revolution ended when Napoleon Bonaparte took power in November 1799 and in 1804 he became Emperor.
Before 1789, France was ruled by the nobles and the church. The
ideas of the Enlightenment were beginning to make the ordinary
people want more power. They could see that the American
Revolutionhgad created a country in wich people had power,
instead of a king.

RELIEF OF FRANCE
To understand the rivers of France it is useful to
first have a little knowledge of the geography of
the country.
Essentially France is mountainous along its
eastern border with (from north to south) the
mountains of the Vosges, Jura and Alpes, with
further mountains in south-central France
(Massif central) and along the southern border
with Spain (the Pyrenees)
The principal rivers largely reflect this
geography, and flow from the mountains to the
sea - usually flowing north and west to the
Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel except
for the Rhone which flows south to the
Mediterranean.
