What Boat Type Is Right For You?If you’re in the market for a boat, whether buying a new or used boat, the typeis a difficult decision. Take a moment to look at the following boat descriptions:

Bass Boats: A lower profile craft which displaces very little water and typically has a lot of powerfor a small boat and range between 18’ to 22’. The primary purpose of this vessel is for serious fresh-water fishing. Bass boats primarily are meant to get to freshwater fish anywhere (very shallow to thedeep) fast.

Bowriders:A Bowrider is traditionally thought of as the family day cruiser. Instead of a cabin at thebow of the boat, it is open with additional seating. They range in size from 18’ to mid 20’. In some ofthe larger models a head is available. Bowriders are primarily meant for flat seas. Families can dolight fishing, skiing or just cruise, these boats are very versatile.

Cuddy Cabins: Cuddies are similar to Bowriders, except instead of open seating in the bow, thereis a small cabin. The cabin is typically used for stowing or for getting out of the sun. This is also anexcellent family day cruiser with multiple uses. Cuddies can range in size from 20’ to 30’. Larger ver-sions can have a galley (food prep area) sink, range top, even a refrigerator!

Walk-Arounds: Similar to Cuddies, except, there is an area that allows you to “walk around” theboat easily from the center area of the cockpit to the bow. They can range in size from 20’ to 30’.Larger versions can also have a galley (food prep area) sink, range top, and a refrigerator.

Aft-Cabin Cruisers: Just as the name implies, they have cabins in the aft (back) of the boat. Tra-ditionally meant for the weekender, aft cabins means more sleeping quarters. This boat is not reallymade for fishing or skiing, just cruising. It can be a great floating mobile home.

Express Boats: This is a boat that has many uses. They range in size from mid 20’s to 100’+. Sodepending on the Express boat that you look at, it can have multiple purposes like a popular familyweekender boat. These boats also make great fishing boats. They traditionally have a head, (some-times a shower), galley, seating, air conditioning and sleeping births.

Convertibles: This typically has the same layout as an express, except the helm station and openseating have been enclosed and named a salon. More space and better headroom usually, theyrange greatly in size from high 20’ to 100’+. Most often designed for a fishing platform, with some-times built in tackle stations in the cockpit (open space in the rear of the boat). Traditionally have ahead (sometimes a shower), galley, seating and sleeping berths. Convertibles also make very goodcruisers with a lot more inside space which also makes an excellent weekender. A lot of convertibleshave heat and air-conditioning, TV’s and refrigerators.

Trawlers:A Trawler, not as it sounds, does not make for a good fishing boat. These boats have twothings in mind; long range cruising (fuel efficient) and comfort. These are the boats people can liveon for extended periods of time. These boats traditionally have all the amenities of home. Trawlersare really only good for cruising and live aboard. They are traditionally very slow, fuel efficient vessels.

Center Consoles: A Center Console’s primary benefit is its deck space. With limited seating, thisboat appeals mostly to fisherman. Center Consoles range in size from low teens to mid 30’s. Theytypically have more than sufficient engine power, remember fisherman like to get to their fishing spotfast. These boats can typically take a variety of seas. Make sure you find out what Center Consolewas designed for before taking in the ocean. Fuel capacity can vary greatly. If it’s a serious fishingboat, fuel will be a primary part of the boat design.


Monthly InspectionsThe following items should be checked every time you use your boat (beforegetting underway). It may seem like a long list, but you’ll soon find that theysimply become a part of your normal procedure every time you step aboard.

• Check that the fuel cocks are in the open position and check fittings and lines for leaks.• Check sight tube for fuel level (It’s important to keep fuel tank levels high to prevent condensation

and the risk of foreign matter being drawn into the fuel lines).• Visually check fuel filters and water traps – drain water if necessary. It’s not uncommon to have

a small amount of water in diesel fuel tanks. It sinks to the bottom of the tank and traps and iseasily drained off.

• Check engine and gearbox oils and coolant levels.• Visually inspect around each engine for oil or coolant leaks or signs of damage such as corrosion.

This is made much easier when you keep your engine room constantly clean. Fuel and oil leaksand corrosion can be quickly identified and fixed.

• Visually check for loose or broken hose clamps on the engines.• Visually inspect exhaust systems for black stains cause by leading gases.• Check genset oil and coolant levels – ensure the genset tray is kept clean so that leaks will be

evident, should they occur.• Check all bilge float switches and high water alarms for correction operation. Some float switches

have a lever on the side that can be lifted up; other types may have a knob on the side of theswitch that you can turn to activate the switch. Otherwise, simply lift the float up to check operation.

• Visually inspect all hose clamps on bilge pump.• Ensure manual bilge pump is operational.• Bilge floor should be kept clean and dry at all times, so that oil, coolant or water leaks will be

evident should they occur.• Check correct pressure of steering system where applicable.• Close and reopen sea cocks to check they have not seized.• Visually inspect all sea strainers to check they are clean. If weed is apparent, shut the sea cock,

remove the filter element, clean weed from the filter, reinstall and open the sea cock. Make surethere are no leads around the strainer.

• Ensure ancillary equipment is secure.• Check hose clamps on ancillary equipment.• Ensure all batteries are secure.• Check level on electrolyte in batteries (make sure water level is over the plates).• Check steering gear for fluid leaks from hydraulic lines and steering ram.• Check rudder glands for water leaks.• Check trim-tab fluid level.• Check operation of all decks hatches and ensure seal is watertight (when you tighten the hatch,

the rubber seal should compress evenly).• Ensure portholes and deck hatches seal well, that all cupboard doors and drawers are closed

and catches are operational (There’s nothing worse when under way than the crash or breakingcrockery as a drawer or door flies open and empties the contents on the floors!). Ensure allcabin, head, and shower doors are secure and catches are operational.

• If the boat has had a period of non-use, check the freshwater quality simply by tasting it.• Unscrew lid on the shower sump box, lift float switch to check operation of gulper pump. Ensure

the sump box is free of debris.• Ensure bow thruster compartment is dry, and where applicable, check float switch.• Ensure ‘D’ shackles are tight on the anchor.• Grease anchor winch and spray the winch motor with lubricant.• Ensure water filler and fuel filler caps are tight.• Check operation of navigation lights.


Annual MaintenanceThe following maintenance should be referred to your dealer’s service dept annually:

• High-pressure hull cleaning

• Antifoul of hull and all underwater surfaces (excluding anodes)

• Polish the propellers

• Inspect props for damage and corrosion

• Check propeller retaining nut and split pin for integrity

• Check skeg and rutter bearings for wear

• Remove and clean all scoops and strainers from skin fittings

• Inspect trim-tab rams for oil leaks

• Inspect and, if necessary, replace underwater anodes

• Polish hull from gunwhale to waterline

• Complete engine and genset service by manufacturer’s agent according to the

manufacturer’s recommended schedules within the scale of engine hours or elapsed

time. Apart from maintaining your engines in top condition, this is also a requirement

of the relevant manufacturer’s warranties.

• Other inspections as outlined in your owner’s manual.

Why Should You Use A Marine Surveyor?Buying a boat is one of the larger investments a person will make. Hiring a surveyor will assure that this investment issuitable and will help uncover any problems prior to purchase. In addition, most insurance companies and financial in-stitutions require a report to confirm a vessel’s condition and value.

A marine surveyor provides objective, unbiased observations as to the condition of a vessel. An inspection will determinea vessel's general integrity and condition and assist in establishing its fair market value. By following the standardsprovided by the U.S. Coast Guard, the American Boat and Yacht Council and the National Fire Protection Association,this will ensure that the vessel is safe for operation.

Six Month MaintenanceThe following maintenance should be referred to your dealer’s service dept semi-annually:

• High-pressure hull cleaning

• Replace engine anodes

• Check hull anodes and replace if necessary


Tips On Brokering Your Boat• Remove personal belongings from plain view.

• Stow all fenders, dock lines and accessories.

• Apply fresh coats of anti-foulant and zincs to hull bottom.

• Clean and re-paint underwater gear such as drives, rudders, thru-hulls, etc.

• Replace or remove worn canvas and/or isinglass.

• Clean bilge very clean and un-obstructed with debris, tools, oils, etc.

• Clean linen pillows and covers, if any (replace if worn or stained).

• Clean counter tops, sinks, stove, refrigerator.

• Clean head well and treat waste tanks.

• Clean entire boat in detail.

• Check all electronics including lights.

• Clean carpeting and keep floor space free of obstructions (replace if stained or worn)

• Check to make sure motors, manifolds, risers and pumps are in good order and clean, with surfaces painted and free of rust.

• Clean exterior cushions and bolsters and check to make sure that they are free of stains or wear.

What To Look For When Buying A Used Boat1. Inspect the transom for fiberglass stress cracks.

2. Inspect the hull for fading and oxidizing.

3. Look for blisters underneath the gelcoat.

4. Inspect the floor for stiffness or soft spots.

5. Determine what type of stringer system is in the hull.

6. Inspect for cracks or fiberglass delamination.

7. Inspect the running gear, including props, shaft, struts, rudders, skegs, etc.

8. Inspect the upholstery for fading and cracking, andseat movement.

9. Inspect hatches and doors for proper operation.

10. Inspect the electrical system: wiring should be neatlytied and supported.

11. Check the gauges for proper functioning.

12. Check the helm area; controls should be operational(forward, reverse, neutral).

13. Check the shift and throttle cables.

14. Check all switches on dash.

15. Inspect the windshield to make sure it’s secure,supported and flush with the deck.

16. Measure the compression on all cylinders.

17. Find out when the water pump was replaced.

18. Inspect the lower unit gear lube. Look for signs ofmilk, indicating water intrusion.

19. Inspect the engine for zinc anodes, which protetthe engine from corrosion.

20. Get a repair and maintenance history.

21. Look for oil leaks or rusted areas.

22. Ask if the boat’s engine(if trailerable) was flushedafter use in salt water.

23. Inspect the manifoldsfor cracks or leaks.

24. Check the thermostat.

25. Check for flame arrester,which is required by theCoast Guard.

26. Take the boat for a ride;does it start up easilyand idle at the dock?

27. Does the boat get up on plane quickly?

28. Monitor the tachometer; check maximum RPM at fullthrottle against manufacturer’s specs.

29. Check for engine vibration while underway.

30. Test the sterndrive; does it go up and down using thetrim switch? Also, test the trim tabs.

31. Check the navigational lights.

32. Inspect areas around the portholes and hatches forstains from water leaks.

33. Check functionality of galley, head, microwave, stove.

34. Turn on air conditioning; does cabin cool down?

35. Turn on generator and do a general check.

36. Inspect the carpet for wear and tear

37. Check the 110 V outlets.

38. Inspect the AC/DC panel; are circuit breakers androcker switches working properly?

39. Inspect the head and shower.
