Knights ready to face daunting Region 4Wes McCardSports Editor

Success is not always measured in victories, but sometimes in experience gained.

For the 2012-13 Upson-Lee Knights, their will be plenty of experience gained this season, as they face perhaps the toughest basketball region in the entire state, in any classification.

In the Knights’ region this sea-son, they will see three teams which are ranked in the top 5 in the AJC’s Preseason State Rankings. The Eagles Landing Golden Eagles are currently ranked No. 1 in the preseason polls, and the Knights will host the Golden Eagles on Dec. 11. Upson-Lee will play Jonesboro and North Clayton twice this season. The Jonesboro Cardinals are ranked No. 3 in the preseason polls and will come to T-Town on Feb. 1 and the Knights will travel to face the Cardinals on Jan. 15. The North Clayton Eagles are ranked No. 5 in the preseason polls, and will travel to Thomaston on Jan. 22.

Upson-Lee will travel to College Park to face the Eagles on Jan. 4.

“We will definitely see some tough competition this season,” said Knights head coach Darrell Lockhart. “We have a really young team this season, and it will be good for our young guys to see some of the good teams they will see this season. We are going to compete night in and night out, but this season isn’t about wins and losses. This season is about this team finding an identity and getting better everyday. We have a talented group of young players, and we are trying to develop them and build on our program. The young guys are the future of our program.”

This season, the Knights will return three seniors. Post players Travis Pittman (6’2) and Raju Singh (6’3) will return to the Knights front court, along with guard Jalen Searcy (5’11). The Knights will depend heavily on juniors Caleb Ward and Toby Fuentes offensively. Ward, a (6’3) forward, is the Knights’ best perimeter shooter, and Fuentes (6’0) will be one of the Knights’

key ball handlers. For the first time in a long time,

the Knights will also see three fresh-men play key minutes. Freshmen guards O’Qualon Harris (6’1) and Kenderius Pennyman (6’) will be a lift to the Knights back court, and (6’3) fresh-man post player David Marshall will be counted on for rebounding and an offen-sive presence around the post.

Last season, the Knights finished 11-14, never winning more than three games in a row and never losing more than four games in a row. According to Lockhart, the Knights will be at a disad-vantage almost every night as far as size goes, but they will use the advantages they do have to the best of their ability.

“We are young, but we are quick,” said Lockhart. “We have some athletic guards who can really put pressure on the ball. We are going to have to push the pace against some of the bigger teams. We can’t afford to get caught in half court situations where our 6’2 big man has to guard someone who is 6’10. We need to use our quickness to our

advantage, try and get out and run, and make free throws. If we can make our free throws, it will give us a chance to be in ball games in the fourth quarter.”

The Knights will open up their regu-lar season tonight, welcoming Taylor County. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m., with the Lady Knights playing at 6 p.m.

The Knights will face 14 different teams this season in their 25 game schedule. Of the 14 teams the Knights face, 11 of the teams had a .500 or bet-ter record last season. Seven of the 14 teams advanced to the state playoffs last season, with five of the 14 teams they play this season having 20 wins or more last season. Four of the teams on the Knights schedule advanced to the Elite 8 of their respective state playoffs. Three of the 14 teams the Knights will see this season advanced to the Final Four last season (Jonesboro 4A, North Clayton 4A, and Eagles Landing 3A). Half of the teams the Knights will see this season, already have one or more player with a scholarship offer from a Division I school.

The Lady Knights will see many new teams in the upcoming season, under new head coach Bart Phillips. The Lady Knights return five seniors from a season ago, and welcome a senior transfer to the team. The Lady Knights will face off with some stiff competition in 2012-13, including the Lady Cardinals from Jonesboro High School. Jonesboro advanced to the Final Four of the State Playoffs last season. Woodland, Mary Persons, and Taylor County are other teams the Lady Knights will see this season which advanced to the State Playoffs last season.

“The girls have been working hard,” said Phillips. “We are excited

to get the season under way. I really think we will compete game in and game out this season. We have a long way to go to be where we need to be, but I feel we are getting better everyday.”

Upson-Lee returns their leading scorer from a season ago, in senior Jasmine Davis. The Lady Knights also return the team leader in assists and steals, with senior Demeshia Russell. Junior Ke’Ondra Ausbrooks also returns this season. Ausbrooks was one of the team leaders in rebounds and blocked shots. New to the Lady Knights program this season, is guard Tykeela Gray. The 5’8” guard transferred to Upson-Lee from Creekside High School, and is expected to make an immediate impact on this year’s squad.

Lady Knights have new coach, new attitude

New head coach Bart Phillips comes to the Lady Knights from Fayette County.
