미식의 계절, 독서의 계절 등 가을을 비유하는 문장은 많지만, 숙면하기 좋은 계절 역시 가을입니다. 하지만 현대인은 커피

와 에너지 드링크에 의지하며 잠을 포기합니다. 7~8시간의 평균 권장 수면 시간에 턱없이 부족한 잠을 청하곤 하지만, 제대

로 잠을 자지 않는 것은 생각보다 건강에 치명적입니다. 최근에는 비만과 고혈압, 대사증후군도 수면과 밀접한 연관이 있

는 것으로 알려졌습니다. 숙면을 취하지 못하면 신진대사와 호르몬 분비의 균형이 깨지고 인슐린 분비가 줄어들기 때문입

니다. 또 수면은 뇌의 기능을 좌우하기도 합니다. 잠을 설친 다음 날 하루 종일 멍하고 어지러운 이유도 여기에 있습니다.

중추신경계의 뉴런과 뇌 역시 자는 동안 휴식을 취해야만 제 기능을 할 수 있으니까요. 수면 장애를 겪고 있다면 3주 내에

병원을 찾는 것이 중요합니다. 3주 이상 같은 증상이 반복되면 만성화되기 때문이죠. 신경과나 정신과적인 면 외에 이비인

후과 쪽에 문제가 있을 수도 있어 다각도로 불면의 원인을 찾아야 합니다. 잠자리 환경 또한 중요합니다. 빛은 생체리듬을

조정하는 요소입니다. 낮에는 빛을 쬐고 밤에는 조도가 낮은 간접조명을 사용해 서서히 잠들 수 있는 환경을 만들어야

합니다. 온도와 습도 역시 중요합니다. 가습기를 사용해 50~60%의 습도를 유지하는 것이 숙면에 도움이 됩니다.

Autumn may be the season for feasting on delicacies or curling up with good books. It is also a perfect

time of the year to enjoy a good night’s sleep. In the hectic, fast-paced world of hours, we go for coffee

or energy drink to stay awake. We hardly ever get the seven to eight hours of sleep as normally recom-

mended, but the lack of sleep is more hazardous to health than you may think. It’s known to be close-

ly linked with obesity, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Sleep also inf luences brain functions.

After a sleepless night, you will feel dazed and dizzy the following day. That’s because neurons in the

central nervous system and brain need rest to function properly. If you suffer from sleep disorders,

visit a nearby hospital within three weeks of the onset of symptoms. Visit a neurologist or psychiatrist

for consultation, though the problem may also be related to your ears, nose or throat. Your sleep envi-

ronment is also crucial. Light can affect your biorhythms. Make sure you get plenty of light during

the day, and use dimmer indirect illumination at night to help you fall asleep. The temperature and

humidity are other key elements. Be sure to maintain the humidity of around 50 to 60 percent.
