Most of you know that I really enjoy reading C.S. Lewis. One of the most unique books that he

ever wrote is The Screwtape Letters. Written during World War 2, it’s a satirical series of letters between

a senior demon named Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, who is a junior demon who is trying to

make sure that a particular British man ends up in Hell.

In the book, the senior demon reminds the junior tempter that he should be careful to not change

too much in the man’s life:

“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one--the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without

sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts”.

This is because the Devil and all his minions know that we are much more comfortable with things

remaining the same. Change is generally one of the hardest things we have to do.

Whether it’s walking into the Narthex with new flooring and paint, entering into the

newly-redecorated bathrooms, or getting used to a new style of worship, it can be jarring to get used to

something new or different. But in spite of this, I truly believe that God works most strongly in us during

these difficult times of change and growth (Romans 12:2).

This is because God has a greater purpose and goal for believers than simple life on the earth.

God is preparing us for an eternity spent worshipping Him, transforming us into the image of Christ

(Ephesians 1:5). To put it into the words of Screwtape to his nephew, “[t]he humans live in time but our

Enemy (God) destines them for eternity.” God has a glorious eternity planned for us, one that is more

magnificent that anything we can possibly imagine.

So as we walk down the beautiful new halls in the Sanctuary building, let’s be thankful for all that

God is doing in our midst, both personally and in our congregation.

In Christ,

Thank you to each and every person who volunteered and made this year’s Vacation Bible School a HUGE success. The names are countless…from the people that donated snack items, to the person that could only volunteer one day or one hour a day, to those that gave up their entire week to shepherd and entertain the 150 children God sent us. It was a fabulous week, full of blessings!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I could not

have done it without each of YOU.
