From the Executive Director

Kirjoitan tätä kolumnia Genevessä, missätähän mennessä on valtavalla joukolla jo koko-nainen viikko keskusteltu tietoyhteiskunnankehityksestä maailman mitassa. Valtioiden,kansainvälisten järjestöjen, kansalaisyhteis-kunnan ja yksityisen sektorin edustajatvalmistelevat täällä Maailman tietoyhteis-kuntahuippukokouksen marraskuussakokoontuvaa kakkosvaihetta. Heillä on vielätoinen viikko aikaa päästä yhteisymmär-rykseen avoinna olevista asioista, joihinkuuluvat muun muassa Internetin hallinta,kehitysmaiden tietoyhteiskuntakehityksenrahoittaminen ja parin vuoden takaisessaensimmäisessä istunnossa hyväksytyn työ-ohjelman toimeenpano ja seuranta.

Ohjelma kattaa lähes kaikki mahdollisetelämänalueet, sillä mitään niistä ei enää voikuvitella ilman informaatio- ja kommuni-kaatioteknologian antamaa panosta. Olemmemyös hyvin nopeasti tottuneet siihen, ettämikä tahansa tieto miltä alalta tahansa onsaatavissa silmiemme eteen vain muutamallahiiren klikkauksella.

Tietotulvan keskellä voi muistella aikoja,jolloin tietoa, vallankaan kauempaa jatuoretta, ei kerta kaikkiaan ollut saatavilla.Gradun teko vähänkin kaukaisemmastaaiheesta (kuten Afrikan poliittisista järjestel-mistä...) 40 vuotta sitten oli tuskallista. Sti-pendien mahdollistama opiskelu ulkomaillaoli arvossa arvaamattomassa. Niiden joukossaASLA-stipendit olivat aivan omassa luokas-saan. Sodanjälkeisinä vuosikymmeninä neolivat suomalaisille korvaamaton henkireikä,jota ilman maa kukaties ei tänään olisi aivansitä, mitä se on.

Entä nyt? Verrattuna aikaan, jolloin ASLAtolivat “the only show in town”, valinnan varaatänään on, eikä opiskelu muualla EU:ssavälttämättä edes ole kallista. Ja kuten sanottu,tieto ja kohtapuoleen myös kontaktit ovatomalla ruudulla, jos halutaan.

Mutta mikään määrä virtuaalisesti välitet-tyjä megabittejä ei korvaa sitä kokemusta jalisäarvoa, jonka opiskelu, opettaminen taitutkimuksen teko uudessa ympäristössävaltameren takana tuo. Sitä paitsi sen parempi,

mitä useammalla suomalaisella nuorella ontilaisuus asua – ei siis vain käydä – Yhdys-valloissa ja vastaavasti amerikkalaisellaSuomessa. Äskettäinen Diana Petkovan jaJaakko Lehtosen tutkimus, jossa selvitettiinsuomalaisten ja bulgarialaisten yliopisto-opis-kelijoiden mielikuvia eri kansallisuuksista, saiainakin minut huolestumaan. Suomalais-nuorten arvioinneissa amerikkalaiset sijoit-tuivat varsin huonosti, ja näkemykset heistäolivat stereotyyppisiä.

Ilmeisesti on niin, että pelkkä bittivirta erimuodoissaan ja eri medioiden kautta, on senvolyymi miten valtava hyvänsä, ei sinänsä autamuodostamaan kuvaa tuosta laajasta jamonimuotoisesta maasta. Jokainen sitäahtaasta näkökulmasta katsova kyllä löytääsieltä vahvistuksen omille ennakkoluuloilleen.Eikö tämä ole amerikkalaisten ongelma eikämeidän, voidaan kysyä. Minun vastauksenion, että se on yhteinen asiamme.

There is an abundance of information onother countries and cultures available to usthrough today’s media. Yet, this informationflow – no matter how extensive – can nevercompare with a personal experience in anotherculture, says Yrjö Länsipuro, a long-termChair of the Finland-America EducationalTrust Fund, in his column below. I couldnot agree more. International educationand exchanges involving the actual movementof individuals are the best means toshare knowledge and promote mutualunderstanding among cultures and societies.

The Fulbright Center mission is to fostergreater understanding between Finland andthe United States through educationalexchange of individuals from the academicand professional communities. But whatconcretely is the impact of these exchangesin light of our mission? Do the exchanges

indeed create linkages and promoteunderstanding? For this issue of the FulbrightCenter News, we asked our current and formergrantees and their hosts to answer thisquestion by sharing their personal experiencesabout the immediate and long-term impactof their exchange, both for themselves andfor their institution.

We will hear, among others, from JoshMelzer, a US graduate student grantee, whoshares his personal account on re-entry in hisarticle “Life after Finland” (p. 18). JuanPrajogo, a current Finnish undergraduategrantee, talks about his battle against time atMIT (p. 20).

Riitta-Mari Tulamo, a former ASLA-Fulbright grantee and a Professor at theUniversity of Helsinki, describes herdepartment’s recent experience hosting anAmerican Fulbright scholar and the impact

of the exchange (p. 8). This Fulbrightexchange, she describes, is the bridge thatnow links the two institutions across theAtlantic and serves as the foundation forfuture student and scholar exchanges.

Record Number of ApplicationsReceived for Study in the U.S.

A record number of applications werereceived by the Fulbright Center from Finnishstudents wishing to study in the United Statesin 2006–2007. With approximately fourstudents applying for each scholarshipavailable to students from the universities andpolytechnics, the final selections turned outparticularly competitive this year. The overallquality of the applications was extremely high.After the completion of the three-stageselection cycle, 10 successful applicants werenominated for a scholarship.

In early October, all students nominatedfor 2006–2007 scholarships were invited toa one-day seminar in Helsinki where theywere introduced to the Finnish-AmericanFulbright Program and its network of currentand past grantees. One week later, a follow-up seminar was organized on the specifics ofapplying to graduate school in the United

Fulbright Centerin stipendien turvin opis-kelee, opettaa tai tekee tutkimusta Yhdysval-loissa lukuvuonna 2005–2006 kaikkiaan31 stipendiaattia.

Fulbright Center osallistuu tänä vuonnamyös useisiin monikansallisiin Fulbright-ohjelmiin, joissa lopulliset stipendivalinnattehdään keskitetysti Yhdysvalloissa. Suoma-laiset hakijat menestyivät näissä hauissaerinomaisesti. Stipendit tutkimukseenYhdysvalloissa

ASLA-Fulbright Research Grant for a JuniorScholar -ohjelma tarjoaa apurahan vähintään4 kuukauden tutkimustyöhön Yhdysvalloissa.Apuraha on suuruudeltaan USD 10 200–15300. Stipendiä voivat hakea tohtorin tutkin-non suorittaneet, tutkijanuransa alkuvai-heessa olevat hakijat. Ohjelma on tarkoitettukaikille tieteenaloille lääketiedettä lukuunottamatta.

Stipendin hakuaika päättyy 9.12.2005.Stipendiaatti voi käyttää apurahansa luku-vuoden 2006–2007 aikana.

Vielä ehtii hakea tutkija- jaasiantuntijastipendejä

Tutkijat, asiantuntijat ja jatko-opiskelijatvoivat hakea apurahoja YhdysvaltoihinU.S.–E.U. Fulbright -ohjelman kautta.Apurahoja myönnetään Euroopan uni-oniin tai Euroopan unionin ja Yhdysval-tain suhteisiin liittyvään tutkimukseen,luennointiin ja opiskeluun Yhdysvalloissa.Ohjelma on avoin EU-maiden kansa-laisille, ja sitä hallinnoi Brysselissä toimivaFulbright-komissio The CommissionBetween The United States of America,Belgium and Luxembourg.

PARHAILLAAN OVAT HAUSSASEURAAVAT STIPENDITLUKUVUODELLE 2006–07:

1. Stipendit tutkimukseenStipendin arvo USD 2 500–2 900/kkStipendikausi voi olla kestoltaan 3 kuukau-desta yhteen lukuvuoteen. Hakijalla on

oltava kutsukirje vastaanottavasta yliopis-tosta. Stipendejä on jaossa yhteensä kuusi.2. Stipendit luennointiin nimetyissäyhdysvaltalaisissa korkeakouluissaStipendin arvo USD 2 500–2 900/kkStipendikausi voi olla kestoltaan 3 kuukau-desta yhteen lukuvuoteen.

Tiedot näitä ”EU Scholar-in-Residence” -luennoitsijoita isännöivistä korkeakouluistavahvistuvat joulukuussa 2005. Stipendejä onjaossa yhteensä kaksi.

Tutkimus- tai luennoitsijastipendeistäkiinnostuneiden tulee palauttaa alustavahakulomake Brysselin Fulbright-komissioonsaadakseen ohjelman varsinaisen hakulo-makkeen. Alustavan hakulomakkeen saaFulbright Centerin kotisivuilta www.fulbright.fi(”Ajankohtaista”-osio). Luennointi- ja tutki-musstipendien hakuaika päättyy 1.3.2006,jolloin varsinaisten hakemusten on oltavaperillä.

3. Stipendi jatko-opintoihin YhdysvalloissaStipendin arvo enimmillään USD 30 000.Stipendi myönnetään vähintään yhdenlukuvuoden kestäviin jatko-opintoihin.

Jatko-opintostipendistä kiinnostuneidentulee palauttaa alustava hakulomake BrysselinFulbright-komissioon mahdollisimman piansaadakseen ohjelman varsinaisen hakulomak-keen. Alustavan hakulomakkeen saa FulbrightCenterin kotisivuilta www.fulbright.fi(”Ajankohtaista”-osio). Jatko-opintosti-pendin hakuaika päättyy 15.1.2006, jolloinvarsinaisen hakulomakkeen on oltava perillä.

Stipendiasiantuntijoille

Mid-Career Professional Development Grant-ohjelma tarjoaa apurahan 4–6 kuukaudenopintoihin, jotka tähtäävät oman ammat-titaidon täydentämiseen ja kehittämiseenYhdysvalloissa. Apurahan suuruus onenimmillään USD 13 500.

Ohjelma on tarkoitettu työuransa keskivai-heessa oleville ammattilaisille ja asiantunti-joille, jotka etsivät uusia näkökulmia jalähestymistapoja omaan työhönsä. Ohjel-masta ei rahoiteta akateemista tutkimusta.Hakijoilta ei edellytetä akateemista loppu-tutkintoa. Hakemukseen on liitettävä

yksityiskohtainen suunnitelma lisäopinnoistatai oman ammattitaidon kehittämiseentähtäävästä projektista sekä kutsu vastaan-ottavasta yliopistosta tai laitoksesta Yhdys-valloissa.

Ohjelman kahdeksan toimintavuodenaikana stipendejä on myönnetty moniinerityyppisiin projekteihin, esimerkiksiseuraaviin:

Fulbright-isännän kokemuksia

Idea Fulbrighterin kutsumiseen syntyi vuosiasitten, kun Helsingin yliopiston kansain-välinen yksikkö tiedotti Fulbright-apurahoistaja mahdollisuudesta kutsua amerikkalainenvieraileva tutkija/opettaja laitokselle. Taus-talla vaikuttivat varmasti myös omat positii-viset kokemukseni 25 vuotta aiemmin.

Kaikki lähti vuonna 1979 saamastanituhannen markan (USD 250!) Fulbright-stipendistä ja palavasta halusta oppia uutta.Matkani venyi kahden vuoden mittaiseksiopiskeluksi The Ohio State Universityssä.Erikoistuin kirurgiaan Kliinisen eläinlääke-tieteen laitoksen hevossairaalassa, missä teintutkimusprojektini ja suoritin Master ofScience -tutkinnon vuonna 1981. Viimeisenpuolen vuoden aikana tapasin DanielSmeakin, joka oli hyväksytty suorittamaanpieneläinkirurgian erikoistumisohjelmaa.Hänestä tuli sittemmin alan professorisamaiseen alma materiimme.

Seuraavan kerran tapasin Danin Wienissäkongressissa 1990-luvun lopulla. Hän sanoituolloin olevansa kiinnostunut tulemaanvierailulle laitoksellemme. Laadin mielestänihyvin perustellun hakemuksen pieneläin-kirurgiaa edustavan Fulbrighterin saamiseksiKliinisen eläinlääketieteen laitokselle. Hake-mukseni ei kuitenkaan läpäissyt tiukkaaarviointia. Perusteluna oli, että lääketieteet,myös eläinlääketiede, oli suljettu poisohjelmasta.

Eläinlääketiede siis sisällytettiin lääketie-teeseen, vaikka kyseessä oli aivan eri ala! Olinpäätöksestä ymmälläni, mutta päätin, että asiatäytyy yrittää korjata. Tein Fulbright Centerinjohtokunnalle uuden anomuksen, jossaperustelin eläinlääketieteen erityispiirteitä jaeläinlääkäreiden jatkokoulutuksen tarvettaSuomessa. Kerroin myös omasta 250 dollarinapurahastani ja siitä, miten ratkaisevasti seoli vaikuttanut omaan urakehitykseeni.

Fulbright Centerin johtokunta tekikinpäätöksen, jonka perusteella eläinlääkärit

saivat jatkossa oikeuden hakea Fulbright-stipendejä. Hain laitoksellemme stipendi-aattia nyt anestesiologian alalta, muttapaikkaan ei ensimmäisellä kerralla saatuhakijoita.

Seuraavana vuonna sain professori DanielSmeakin hakemaan niin sanottua Any field -stipendiä USA:ssa – ja vihdoin meitä onnisti.Helmikuun puolivälissä2004 Smeak saapui neljänkuukauden opetusvie-railulle laitoksellemme.Hänen puolisonsa viisu-min saanti oli erityisenongelmallista, ja se jär-jestyi vain pari päivääennen matkaa. Pariskun-nan saapuessa lentoase-malle kukaan ei kysellytrouva Smeakin viisumia!

Helsingin yliopistojärjesti Smeakeille asunnon ”vierashuone”-järjestelmänsä kautta. Asunto oliKulosaaressa hyvien liikenneyhteyksien päässäja lähellä klinikkaamme. Dan työskentelipäivät klinikalla aamusta iltamyöhäänopettaen ja potilaita leikaten. Sillä välinpuoliso tutustui suomalaiseen kulttuuriinmonin eri tavoin. Dan myös piti kolmi-päiväisen pieneläinkirurgian kurssin, jolleosallistui sekä laitoksemme omia ettäulkopuolisia eläinlääkäreitä. Kurssin tuloillavuokrasin Smeakeille auton koko vierailunajaksi. Pitkäaikaisvuokra oli sangen edullinen,ja autoilu avasi vieraillemme aivan uudenulottuvuuden. Näin he pystyivät tutustumaanlaajasti maahamme viikonloppuisin.

Pitkän opettajakokemuksensa perusteellaja ulkopuolelta tulleena Dan havaitsi useitavinoutumia opetus- ja tutkimustoiminnas-samme. Hän opasti meitä näkemään asioitauudella tavalla ja neuvoi, miten voimme ryhtyäkorjaamaan ongelmakohtia. Hänen helpostilähestyttävä olemuksensa ja inhimillinen

otteensa saivat vaikeatkin asiat sujumaanjoustavasti.

Tätä ”parannustyötä” tehtiin sekä työssäettä vapaa-aikana. Henkilöstö ja opiskelijatottivat Danin erittäin hyvin vastaan. Hejärjestivät Smeakeille vapaa-ajan ohjelmaaavantouinnista virvelöintiin, saunomisestamutkamäkiin ja kesämökkien rauhaan.

Tyttäreni totesi, ettäSmeakit olivat neljässäkuukaudessa nähneetenemmän Suomea kuinhän 18 vuodessa.

Olin todella kiitollinensiitä, että niin moni halu-si vuorollaan toimiahostina. Näin Smeakittutustuivat lähemminsairaalamme eläinlääkä-reihin, ja samalla Dan saiparemman kokonais-

kuvan toiminnastamme. Henkilöstön aktii-vinen osallistuminen huojensi omalta osaltanimyös pääisännän vastuuta.

Neljä kuukautta vierähti aivan liian no-peasti. Vierailun lopulla järjestimme kokoiltapäivän kestävän laitosseminaarin, jossa Danvälitti näkemyksiään ja ehdotuksiaanmietintämyssyymme. Hän ihmetteli, mitenselviydymme kaikista velvoitteistamme näinvähällä henkilöstöllä. Se onkin sekäkehityksemme että alakohtaisen ja eläinlaji-kohtaisen erikoistumisemme suurin este.Suunnittelemamme kliinisen opetuksen jatutkimuksen parannusohjelma sekä euroop-palaisen jatkokoulutusohjelman käynnistä-minen saivat kuitenkin Danin vierailusta aivanuutta puhtia.

Ennen vierailun päättymistä suunnit-telimme jo jatkovierailua seuraavaksi vuodeksi,jolloin Dan Smeakin oli määrä luennoidaNorjassa. Toukokuussa 2005 Smeakitsaapuivatkin tänne kahden viikon vierailulle.Dan työskenteli klinikallamme ja haastatteli

henkilöstöämme. Hän tutustui rakenteillaolevaan Clinicumiin Viikissä, jonne laitosmuuttaa kesäkuussa 2006. Dan iloitsihavaitsemastaan edistyksestä, mutta surisamalla muutaman kollegan lähtöä: kasvavantyömäärän ja nykyisen palkkatason vuoksiyliopistojen on kaikkialla yhä vaikeampi pitäähenkilöstöään.

Teimme yhdessä suunnitelmat seuraavaksivuodeksi. Nuori suomalainen kollega lähteelokakuussa 2005 kuukaudeksi opiskelemaanprofessori Smeakin luokse Ohioon, jaSmeakit ottavat hänet luokseen asumaan.Hän aikoo ensi keväänä hakea eurooppa-laiselle nimettyä paikkaa 3-vuotiseenpieneläinkirurgian erikoistumisohjelmaanOhiossa. Dan Smeak on tulossa jälleenSuomeen laitoksemme vieraaksi ensi vuonna,jolloin hän vierailee luennoimassa Baltianmaiden eläinlääketieteellisissä tiedekunnissa.

Fulbrighter-isäntänä toimiminen on koke-muksena ylittänyt kaikki odotuksemme. Seon myös luonut yliopistojemme välilleyhteistyön sillan, jota pitkin nuoremmatkollegat jatkossa astelevat.

A CanadianInternship

Moving to Finland was an easy decision forme to make. When I was offered a positionat the Fulbright Center in Helsinki, I jumpedat the chance. Hailing from a small town inNova Scotia on the eastern coast of Canada,I have always enjoyed traveling and learningabout other countries and associations thatpromote mutual understanding among thepeople of the world.

My undergraduate studies were completedat St. Thomas University, a small liberal artsuniversity in the eastern part of Canada. As aparticipant in the Finnish-Canadian traineeexchange program, I did a two-monthinternship at the Fulbright Center. Thisinternship program is administered by TheAssociation of Universities and Colleges ofCanada (AUCC) and the Centre forInternational Mobility (CIMO) in Finland,who collaborate in the management of theprogram. This program offers recentuniversity graduates an opportunity to workin Finland that is related to their career.

Being involved with an organization thatclosely deals with academic exchange andadvising I hoped to provide as much usefulinformation as possible to people who wantto study and research abroad, while alsolearning more about the fascinating countryof Finland.

While at the Fulbright Center, I got toknow an organization involved in internationalacademic exchange, educational advising andservices, scholarship program administration,and international standardized testing. Soonafter my arrival in August, the FulbrightCenter hosted an orientation for theAmerican grantees in Finland. During thistime, I was able to get an in-depth look at thevarious organizations and programs that theFulbright Center is involved with andadministers. It was a long list!

Although the focus of my internship wascentered around Finnish-Canadian exchangesand developing the Fulbright Center materialon study opportunities in Canada, I learnedabout all of the Fulbright Center’s activities.

There are often many difficultiesencountered when preparing to embark on ajourney to another country. When choosing

an institute of higher education is added tothe equation, it can add many questions. TheFulbright Center houses a comprehensivecollection of materials on higher educationin Canada. The staff assists in using thematerial collection and answers questionsabout study and research in Canada, funding,and standardized testing. The center alsoorganizes free information sessions aboutCanadian study opportunities.

Having been a previous participant in anoverseas exchange program, I have realizedthat the benefits of living abroad far outweighany challenges you might face prior to leaving.It enables a person to make friends from allover the world, see things from a differentperspective, and acquire interculturalknowledge and understanding. Theopportunities for this abound in a countrylike Canada, with its huge geographical sizeand multitude of ethnic backgrounds. Avariety of languages are spoken in the countryand many cultures come together, so there isa chance to learn from everyone.

Canadian universities have earned a globalreputation for teaching and researchexcellence. A few of these areas are incomputer science, natural and environmentalscience, telecommunications, and medicine.There are also exceptional universities andcolleges that specialize in business, journalism,visual arts and design, creative writing, Nativestudies, and musical composition. Virtuallyevery field of study is available at one of thehigher-education institutions in Canada.Canada is a bilingual country and Englishand French are widely spoken, so there is theadditional benefit of being able to take manyof the courses in either of these languages.No matter the field of study or universityyou choose, Canada can offer something ofinterest.

Ceramics

Ceramics is the art of making utilitarian orsculptural objects from clay by forming andfiring. Ceramics is not only used for artisticpurposes, it is also used in engineering. Thereare programs throughout the United Statesthat focus on both of these fields. The artisticfield includes studies in the followingcategories: ceramic art as craft, sculpture, ordesign. Rarely are the three separated withinschool programs; however, there is usually astronger emphasis on one, depending on theteacher and the program.

According to the National Association ofSchools of Art and Design (NASAD), thereare approximately 1,000 Bachelor’s andMaster’s of Fine Arts (BFA and MFA,respectively) students enrolled in ceramicsprograms at accredited schools of art anddesign throughout the United States. Eachschool runs its various programs differently,and students can expect to overlap into otherartistic mediums while pursuing a ceramicsdegree. Some schools allow for a minor fieldof studies, which is usually in another medium

such as Art Education or Art Therapy.Most art programs require the first year to

be in art foundations. In this first year, thestudent is introduced to various areas of art.These range from 3D (sculpture, ceramics,design) to 2D (graphic design, illustration,painting) and drawing. Elective credits mayalso be available in a specialized field, such asphotography, sculpture, glass, or fiber. Firstyear students can also expect classes in basicart history, modernism, writing, sociology,and philosophy. Students often use their firstyear foundations courses to decide their futurecourse of study and during the next year willbranch off into a specific department. As anaside, students attending a state universitywill usually need to fulfill basic humanitiesrequirements (which could be courses inmathematics, foreign languages, history, orscience). Their foundation year might bemarkedly different than that of a student ata specialized or private institution.

The majority of art programs for BFAdegrees last four years, and MFA programs

range from two to three years. Students willoften take a few years between the twoprograms to develop their art in preparationfor the highly concentrated study of a MFA;however, it is possible to be accepted directlyinto a MFA program after completion of theBFA.

Graduation from a ceramic art programopens many possibilities for an artist’s future.Potters or sculptors often sell in galleries andfairs. Many become designers, decorators, ormodel-makers for a variety of companies.These companies can be in areas as diverse asdinnerware design, building materials industry,or car manufacturing. Graduates also becomeart teachers and studio technicians, whileothers work at or manage galleries andmuseums. The possibilities seem endless.

Although doctoral degrees can be obtainedin areas such as art education, art therapy, orart history, the MFA is the terminal degree inthe studio arts in the United States.

Before coming to Finland, Heathercompleted her BFA at the University of theArts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1996-2000. Upon arrival at the university, she wasunsure of what major to pursue but wasinterested in art education. Since this programwas not offered as a major at her university,she was required to choose a major field ofinterest. “I enjoyed all mediums,” saysHeather, “but I finally elected the CraftsDepartment, whichhouses glass, ceramics,metals and jewelry, fiber,and wood. I quicklybecame interested inceramics and gave littletime to other mediums.”

In addition to thecrafts major, Heatherdid a concentration (orminor) in Art Education,which required her tospend an extra semester finishing her arteducation practicum. After graduating withher BFA, she balanced substitute teaching,managing a gallery, and further developingher ceramic work in her home studio. Shewas granted access to the ceramic facilities ata small town Potters’ Guild, where she couldfire her work and make glazes.

After about a year of this, Heather wasready to broaden her knowledge of the artworld.

“I decided that in order to open the doorinto teaching higher education and expandingmy own work potential, I needed to take thenext step in my academic studies.” This took

the form of an MFA at the CranbrookAcademy of Art. “Since receiving my MFA,I feel I had more than doubled my chances ofhaving a more successful professional artcareer. Not only was I able to develop myideas and artistic work, but I am now alsoqualified to enter the teaching arena ofcolleges and universities.”

Preceding Heather’s grant year in Finland,she did a summer residency. “I was offered asummer residency at one of the mostinfluential and historically known centers ofceramics in the United States, the Archie BrayFoundation.” There are many residencies andfellowships available throughout the UnitedStates where artists have a studio for a periodof time to develop new work. “These aregreat opportunities for artists at all levels,”says Heather.

During her Fulbright tenure, Heather didindependent research at the University of Artand Design in Helsinki. “A great way tofurther studio artists’ education and researchbeyond the MFA is to apply for a Fulbrightscholarship. It affords the opportunity tostudy in a foreign country while exploringone’s interests and connections to othercultures. It is a valuable chance that I wouldrecommend to any artist looking to furthertheir experiences, knowledge, and horizons.”

Heather is currently co-teaching anintroductory throwing course for sophomore

to upper class studentswith James D. Makins,while continuing toproduce work at her almamater, the University ofthe Arts. She wasrecently invited to displayher work in a groupexhibition, “InspiredUtility: ExceptionalCeramic Vessels,” at theMaine Line Art Center in

Havorford, Pennsylvania. Heather will exhibitsix groupings of work she created while inFinland on the Fulbright. She is also workingon a new design for an exhibition at theBaltimore Clayworks in Maryland, “AnExtravagance of Salt and Pepper.” Bothexhibitions are scheduled to open in May,2006. American Grantee Orientation

Launching the Fulbright Year

The Fulbright Program offers grantees acomprehensive package of support servicesand enrichment programs in addition to thegrant stipend itself. American grantees starttheir grant year in Finland with a three-dayarrival orientation program in Helsinki. Theprogram consists of a two-day seminar and arange of special events which provide the newFulbrighters with an opportunity to networkwith professionals and organizations involvedin Finnish-American exchanges.

This year’s seminar began with a briefingon special Fulbright benefits and supportservices available for the grantees at theFulbright Center throughout the year. Guestspeakers from a Finnish bank continued thepractical service theme as they intoduced theFinnish banking system and advised thegrantees in practical matters. The US

Consulate introduced the services theyprovide for American citizens. The granteeswere also introduced to the servicesand activities organized by cooperatingorganizations such as the ASLA-FulbrightAlumni Association and the League ofFinnish American Societies.

The session on higher education inFinland provided the grantees with anoverview of the education system in Finlandand its recent developments including thechanges in the degree structure and theimplications of the Bologna process.Lecturers from two Finnish universitiesoffered their insights into the subject. Thiswas followed by separate break-out sessionsfor scholars, students, and teachers. In thesesmaller groups, facilitated by recent Fulbrightgrantees and university representatives, it was

possible to go into more detail about theeveryday practices at Finnish universities andschools and to provide concrete tips forvisiting students, teachers and lecturers.

The full day of sessions was followed by areception in honor of the new grantees hostedby the US Ambassador, H.E. Earle I. Mackand Mrs. Carol D. Mack at their Residencein Kaivopuisto.

The second day of the orientation wasdedicated to culture. The sessions includedintroductions to the Finnish language,as well as Finnish mentality, values, andcommunication patterns. The presentationssprouted a lively discussion on the prevailingcultural stereotypes.

Each year a distinguished Fulbrightalumnus or alumna is invited to give apresentation at the special luncheon hostedby the Department for Communication andCulture of the Finnish Ministry for ForeignAffairs. This year the lecture was titledFinnish System of Science and Technologyand it was given by the President of theAcademy of Finland, Professor RaimoVäyrynen. Professor Väyrynen was himself aFulbrighter in 1982–83. He served as aFulbright Fellow at the Center ofInternational Studies of the MassachusettsInstitute of Technology.

In the afternoon the City of Helsinkisponsored a sightseeing tour, and later in theevening the ASLA-Fulbright AlumniAssociation arranged a Buddy Event receptionto introduce the grantees to the members ofthe association in Finland. The followingSaturday's walking tour of the SuomenlinnaSea Fortress was organized by another formerFinnish Fulbright grantee, Dr. Aki Kalliomäki.

The Fulbright orientation programswould not be possible to the current extentwithout the significant contribution from andparticipation by the many partners andsponsors of the Fulbright Center. The Centerwants to extend its sincere thanks to all thecontributors to this year’s programs.

Altogether 13 American grantees withtheir family members participated in theArrival Orientation events in August. Aseparate orientation will be arranged inJanuary for the grantees arriving for the springsemester.

Fulbright Senior Specialists Program tarjoaasuomalaisille yliopistoille ja korkeakouluillemahdollisuuden hakea amerikkalaista asian-tuntijaa 2–6 viikon vierailulle Suomeen.Korkeakoulut voivat ohjelman kautta etsiäjoko tietyn aihealueen asiantuntijaa tai esittäävalittavaksi tiettyä henkilöä, joka on ohjelmanasiantuntijarekisterissä (CIES:n ylläpitämä”Senior Specialists Roster”).

Apurahoja myönnetään hyvin monentyyp-pisiin projekteihin. TOEFL Internet-based test eli Internet-pohjainen TOEFL-testi korvaa nykyisentietokoneavusteisen (CBT) ja kynä-paperi-testin (PBT) asteittain syksyn 2005 ja vuoden2006 aikana. Tässä artikkelissa tutustutaanuuteen testiin kahdeksan pääkohdan avulla.

Aiemmasta käytännöstä poiketen neenimmillään neljä oppilaitosta, joille halutaanlähettää virallinen testitulos, valitaan jotestiajan varauksen yhteydessä. Valintaan voitehdä muutoksia Internetissä testiä edeltävääniltaan asti.

Testin rakenneTOEFL iBT:n osiot ovat luetun- jakuullunymmärtäminen, puhuminen ja kirjoi-tus. Testi kartoittaa testintekijän kommuni-

kointikykyä aiempaa testiä paremmin: iBT-testissä on uutena osiona puheosio, ja lisäksimukana on käytännön kommunikointi- jatiedonyhdistelytaitoja mittaavia integroiviatehtäviä. Niissä testintekijä kirjoittaa japuhuu luetun ja kuunnellun perusteella.Kielioppia erikseen mittaava rakenneosiopoistuu. TOEFL iBT -testissä voi tehdämuistiinpanoja koko testin ajan. Luetunym-märtämisosioon on lisätty sanasto (glossary)ja mahdollisuus tarkastella aiempia vastauksiajälkikäteen ennen osioajan umpeutumista(review option).

TuloksetTestin pisteytys muuttuu: kokonaistulos on120 ja osiotulokset 0–30. Testintekijä ei enääsaa alustavaa tulosta heti testin jälkeen. ETSilmoittaa virallisen tuloksen Internetissä 15päivää testin jälkeen ja myös postittaatuloksen sekä testintekijälle että hänenvalitsemilleen oppilaitoksille. TOEFL iBT-tulos on voimassa kaksi vuotta.

TulosvaatimustenmäärittelyTestin pisteytyksen muuttumisen vuoksikorkeakoulujen on määriteltävä TOEFL iBT-tulokset.Tulosvaatimuksia määriteltäessäapua saa muun muassa TOEFL:in eritestiversioiden tulosvertailutaulukoista, tutki-malla eri korkeakoulujen asettamia tulosrajojaja käymällä läpi ETS:n kehittämän StandardSetting -prosessin.

TOEFL iBT -testin tulokset eivät oletäysin verrannollisia PBT- ja CBT-testientuloksiin, koska testien rakenne ja tehtävä-tyypit ovat erilaisia. Tulosvertailutaulukotauttavat kuitenkin ymmärtämään PBT-,CBT- ja iBT-pisteiden välisiä suhteita.

Standard Setting -prosessissa tutustutaan

ETS suosittelee, että testin kokonais-tulosvaatimuksen lisäksi asetettaisiin myöserilliset osiotulosvaatimukset tai osiotuloksiinkiinnitettäisiin ainakin huomiota: samankokonaistuloksen saaneilla hakijoilla voi ollavarsin erilaiset osiopisteet ja siis varsin eri-laiset valmiudet toimia englannin kielellä.

GMAT-testin voi suorittaa vuoden loppuunasti Fulbright Centerin testikeskuksessa.Testi järjestetään viikoittain tiistaisin, keski-viikkoisin ja torstaisin sekä kuukaudentoisena lauantaina. Viimeinen testipäivä on22.12.2005.

Testipäivän voi vaihtaa maksutta lokakuunja joulukuun välisenä aikana, jos testintekijävaihtaa ajan seitsemän päivää ennen testi-päivää. Vastaavasti koko testimaksu, USD250, palautetaan, jos testiaika perutaanvähintään seitsemän päivää ennen testipäivää.

Uusi vuosi tuo suuria muutoksia GMAT-testiin. Testi siirtyy pois Prometricilta ja senvuoksi myös testin järjestäminen FulbrightCenterissä loppuu. Tammikuun 2006 alusta

Vuoden 2003–2004 aikana TOEFL-kielitestin suorittaneiden, suomea äidin-kielenään puhuvien testintekijöiden keski-arvotulos oli 254 pistettä (maksimi 300pistettä). Suomenkieliset testintekijät sijoit-tuivat vertailussa jaetulle 10:nnelle sijalle.Testintekijöiden kansallisuuden mukaantehdyssä vertailussa suomalaiset sijoittuivatjaetulle seitsemännelle sijalle.

From Our Fulbright Grantees

I landed in Los Angeles on July 16, 2003. Itwas the first time I had been back since leavingfor Helsinki almost 11 months before. I wasgreeted at the airport by my father and twoof my friends. It was a typical scene for theentrance terminal at the LAX’s BradleyInternational Terminal: families and friendswere reunited after days, weeks, months andpossibly even years apart. But I was completelydetached from the situation—it was as if thewhole event was a stage to me. I felt as though,rather than “coming home,” I was waking upfrom a dream that would be impossible torecount to anyone that was part of my life inthe US. When I came back it felt as if nothinghad changed and everything had changed.

It was nice to be back home at first. Friendswanted to come and visit. Family wasinterested in hearing about experiences andseeing pictures. But no stories or photo

albums could justify, in my mind, whatHelsinki had actually meant to me. I wasalways asked “why Finland” when I was inFinland. Finns, of course, are unendinglyperplexed with why foreigners—particularlythose from big, sunny cities—chose to comeand live in Finland. I never felt like I couldadequately answer that question while inFinland. Similarly, I couldn’t quite seem toexplain why it felt like the best decision I hadmade up to that point in my life.

The first few months were certainlyfrustrating. I was faced with the dauntingtask of beginning a life that could adequatelycompete with the life that I had left behindin Finland. I was torn between the desire tostill be in Europe and the subconsciousknowledge that I had to do somethingworthwhile now that I was back home andfor the first time facing the job market with

a college diploma in hand. I had just spentalmost a year studying only what I wanted,doing only what I wanted. I felt that my new-found knowledge gained from my courseworkand research at the University of Helsinkineeded to be harvested productively in LosAngeles. I wanted to work in internationalpolicy or public issue advocacy. But in a citythat revolves around entertainment, my skillsand interests were of little value. Rather thansettle for an office job that I knew would notmake me happy, I went to work for Starbucksas a coffee barista. It was the result of beingnumb—not knowing what to do with myselfafter such an immense growing and changingexperience. I never wanted to leave Finland,and when I was back it took me months toaccept that I had returned. I was experiencingreverse culture shock. My mind—logical (andbroke!) was in the US, my heart was still inFinland.

The one thing that I did do almostimmediately upon my return was to startfinding ways that would bring me back. Whilein Helsinki I studied Finland’s role in theEuropean Union. I had some notion of whatthe EU was when I arrived in Finland, but inreality there was so much that I had to learnabout the organization in general before Istudied Finland’s role within it. It was thisin-depth study—combined with an amazingFulbright sponsored EU institution tour inBelgium that sold me on the academic meritof the EU. Now that I was back in the US Ifelt that I needed to immerse myself inanything that would make me feel as thoughI were still learning about European politicalprocesses. It was an intensely personal questfor knowledge, as most of my friends had noidea what the European Union actually was.But they feigned interest out of kindness.And I only dug deeper for opportunities thatwould allow me to come back to Europe andstudy. Coming back to Helsinki was goalnumber one, but in the absence of a graduateprogram at the University, I opted for aprogram in (yes, I must admit) Sweden. LundUniversity’s Master of European Affairsprogram was my ticket back to NorthernEurope. I applied for entrance to the programand funding for living expenses from theAmerican-Scandinavia Foundation in lateOctober—only two months after I hadreturned. Now it was just a matter of waiting.

was just what I wanted, and by June anotheryear had flown by and I was faced with theprospect once again of coming back to theUS. This time I felt that coming back wasthe right thing to do. I wanted to see howthings went in New York City, a place thatwas a happy medium (to me, at least!)

between Europe and LosAngeles. A place where Icould develop myselffurther professionally,academically, and mostimportant personally.

Much has changed inmy life since leavingFinland on that July day.I have joined organizationsthat keep me connectedto Finland and Europe. I

have kept personal relationships that I madeduring my experience there—some are stillsome of my best friends. I have also engagednew people and situations that have changedme dramatically, and much of the credit isdue to the experiences that I had in Finland.Not to be overdramatic, but coming into anew place and developing a new life as aforeign citizen has amazingly empoweringeffects. The strength, patience and wisdomthat I’ve gained from that experience hasguided me through the turbulent andexuberant times that came afterwards. I knownow to appreciate moments as they happen,and I know how to find opportunity whenthings seem dark. Perhaps more than anything,I know that it’s possible to return to what Inow call my “other home.” And I know that Iwill.

The possibility of a light at the end of thetunnel made my life in LA seem much better.I rapidly began to tire of working at a café atfour in the morning and wanted to get somereal professional experience, something thatI could look forward to doing on a daily basis,and something that actually paid a sustainablesalary! After a prolongedjob search, I finally landedin a communications firmthat specialized in publicpolicy and social marketing.It was the closest thingthat I would come topublic policy in LA, so Ifelt as though I was onthe right path. InFebruary I found outthat I had been rejectedfor funding from AmScan and awaited wordfrom Lund on acceptance to the program.Without the money, however—getting backto Europe seemed a more distant possibility.

I was happy at work. It wasn’t my dreamjob, but it definitely taught me somevaluable lessons. By March I had a clearerunderstanding of the value of being back inLA and what the past six months had donefor me: I had never been in a position ofbeing on such a high and then coming to sucha low. Having to return from Finland with noplans or commitments was a very humblingexperience. I mean, here I was a Fulbrightgrantee who had been overly active inuniversity life four years before. I was reducedto living with my dad and making coffee fora living. As much as I hated it at the time,that year-after taught me a lot of life lessons.

In mid-April I finally got the change to goback to Europe on a family trip to Ireland.That vacation made me once again realizewhere it was that I wanted to be. Almost as ifit was meant to be, when I again returned toLA after the 10-day trip, a letter sat on mybed from Lund University. It was myacceptance letter to the masters program.I immediately decided that I was going back,no matter the cost. From the end of Apriluntil the middle of August, it was the onlything that I could really think about.

My year in Sweden was amazing. Havingbeen through the heartache of having to leaveEurope once made me relish the experiencethat much more. The academic experience

Lost in America:Mistä lisää tuntejavuorokauteen?

Tahdotko ulkomaille opiskelemaan? Par-haisiin kouluihin? Ehkä Yhdysvaltoihin? Niinminäkin tahdoin. Pitkään kytenyt kipinälähteä Yhdysvaltoihin opiskelemaan roihahtilopulta liekkiin armeijavuoden myllerrystenaikana lokakuussa 2003. En ollut ollenkaanvarma, pääsisinkö sisään haluamiini kouluihin,mutta päätin kuitenkin yrittää. Mitä minullaoli menetettävää? Paria ylimääräistä tuntiaesseiden kirjoittamista väsyneenä teltassalyhdyn valossa ei lasketa.

Huhtikuussa 2004 minut oli hyväksyttyopiskelemaan Yhdysvaltoihin MassachusettsInstitute of Technologyyn (MIT, www.mit.edu).Tässä vaiheessa minua alkoi epäilyttää:uskallanko heittäytyä neljäksi vuodeksituntemattomaan? Onneksi kuitenkin tiesin,että perheeni ja ystäväni kyllä säilyvät, olinpa

poissa miten kauan tahansa. Luotin myössiihen, että unelman toteuttaminen ei voi ollakiinni rahoituksesta. Valitettavan harva tietää,että jos Jenkeissä opiskelun rahoitukseen eilöydy 40 000 dollaria vuodessa omastataskusta, monet parhaista yliopistoistatarjoavat ”need-based”-rahoitusta ”merit-based”-apurahojen lisäksi tai sijasta. Minunrahoituksestani ovat pääasiassa vastanneetvanhempani, valtio ja erilaiset säätiöt, joistatärkein on ollut Fulbright Center. Kiitos siitäheille!

Aloitan juuri toista vuottani MIT:ssä jaopiskelen parhaillaan sopivassa suhteessateknisiä aineita ja erilaisia kommunikaatio-opintoja pääaineenani Management. Suun-nitelmanani on suorittaa vielä toinenkinBachelor-tutkinto pääaineena joko

Economics tai Biological Engineering javalmistua toivottavasti kesäkuussa 2008.

Elämä ja opiskelu Yhdysvalloissa onsuurimmaksi osaksi vastannut odotuksiani.Opiskelu on intensiivistä ja rankkaa, muttasamalla erittäin palkitsevaa. Opiskeluun voimennä viikossa jopa 60 tuntia, muttavähemmälläkin voi selvitä, jos on valmistekemään kompromisseja. Lisäksi jokapäivälle riittää erilaisia seminaareja ja kult-tuuritapahtumia, urheilumahdollisuudetovat loistavat, osallistuminen oikeaantutkimustyöhön on yleistä aina ensimmäisestäopiskeluvuodesta lähtien ja vapaaehtois-toimintaa pidetään lähes selviönä.

Ensimmäisen opiskeluvuoteni olin MIT:nsoutujoukkueessa: kuudet treenit viikossakahdesta kolmeen tuntia kerralla, lisäksisatunnaisia kilpailuja Ivy Leaguen koulujavastaan ja kahden viikon soutuleiri Floridassa.Kokemus oli äärimmäisen kova muttaantoisa. Viime vuoden asuin yliopistonasuntolassa, ja tällä hetkellä kotini on ChiPhi Fraternityssa (chiphi.mit.edu), joka on40 opiskelijan itsenäinen asuinyhteisöBostonin hienossa Back Bayn kaupungin-osassa.

Ennen MIT:n opintojani ehdin ottaahieman tuntumaa myös Suomen korkea-koulutukseen Espoon Teknillisessä korkea-koulussa. Myönteisimpiä yllätyksiä täälläMIT:ssä on ollut se, että professoritluonnollisesti osaavat asiansa perinpohjin,mutta lisäksi he ovat usein erittäinkarismaattisia esiintyjiä ja mielenkiintoisiapersoonia. On hämmentävää, kunensimmäisenä syksynä pienryhmääsi vetääNobelin palkinnon voittanut professori.MIT:n yhteisön jäsenissä on 60 Nobel-laureaattia, muiden muassa elokuvastaBeautiful Mind tuttu matemaatikko JohnForbes Nash Jr., YK:n pääsihteeri KofiAnnan sekä fyysikko Richard P. Feynman.Mielenkiintoisena, hieman teknisempänäyksityiskohtana mainittakoon, että kaikkimaailman 18-alkuiset IP-osoitteet ovatMIT:n hallussa.

Yhdysvaltoihin tullessani olin erittäinyllättynyt ihmisten Suomi-tietoisuudesta.Ainakin monet tietävät, että se on jossainVenäjän lähellä, ehkä osa Skandinaviaa, taijossain ”aika pohjoisessa muttei kuitenkaanigluvyöhykkeellä”. Joku tiesi, että suomalaisetovat kovaa viinakansaa, toinen oli joskuskuullut saunasta ja kolmas Nokiasta.Ensimmäisen Amerikan-viikkoni aikanaolikin mielenkiintoista järjestää turkkilaisenja venäläisen tytön kanssa kulttuurishowmaissamme vallitsevasta saunakulttuurista.Erityistä hilpeyttä herätti saunavasta. Kuka

nyt nauttisi kaverin huitoessa ihoa kimpullakoivunoksia? Täällä opiskelee kuitenkinvalitettavan vähän suomalaisia – tällä hetkelläperusopiskelijoita on minun lisäkseni vain yksi.

Keväällä liityin ystävieni innoittamanavapaaehtoiseksi Big Brothers of MassachusettsBay -ohjelmaan (www.bbmb.org). BBMBtarjoaa 7–18-vuotiaille pojille mahdol-lisuuden puuhata erilaisten aktiviteettienparissa oman “isoveljen” kanssa. Minun“pikkuveljeni” on 13-vuotias afrikkalais-amerikkalainen Lionel, joka haaveilee pelaa-vansa isona amerikkalaista jalkapalloa taikoripalloa. Toisaalta palomiehen tai poliisinammattikaan ei kuulemma olisi yhtäänhassumpi. Meillä molemmilla on ollutmielenkiintoisia hetkiä puolin jos toisintutustuessamme toistemme kulttuureihin.Salmiakki taisi olla Lionelille aika erikoinenkokemus. Toisaalta en ole minäkäänaikaisemmin pelannut koripalloa jenkki-lähiössä.

Mahdollisuuksia ja tekemistä on täällä niinpaljon – aikaa valitettavasti tälläkin puolellaAtlanttia vain se 24 tuntia vuorokaudessa.

Bicentennial Chair

The Fulbright Bicentennial Chair inAmerican Studies at the University ofHelsinki for 2005–06 is Dr. Stephen G.Rabe, a professor of history at the Universityof Texas at Dallas (UTD).

At the University of Helsinki, Dr. Rabe isassociated with the Renvall Institute, whichoffers degree programs in North Americanand Latin American studies. He teachescourses about the history of United States

foreign relations, supervises graduate theses,assists in curriculum development, givesoccasional guest lectures at other universitiesand participates in the development of theNorth American Studies program at the hostuniversity.

Rabe has been at UTD since 1977 and hastaught courses about U.S. foreign relations,U.S. relations with Latin America, theAmerican experience in Vietnam, U.S. history

since 1945, and U.S. historiography. He alsohas taught about slavery. Rabe has won threeawards for distinguished teaching.

The author of numerous books and articleson U.S. foreign relations, Rabe’s newest study,titled The U.S. Intervention in British Guiana: ACold War Story, was published by the Universityof North Carolina Press in October 2005.

Rabe has written numerous book chapters,book reviews and encyclopedia articles aboutU.S. and Latin American history. Foundationsand research institutes have supported hisresearch, and he has won grants from theNational Endowment for the Humanities, theAmerican Historical Association, the LyndonBaines Johnson Foundation, the RockefellerArchive Center and the Eleanor RooseveltInstitute, among others.

Rabe previously held a FulbrightDistinguished Chair, serving in 1990–91 asthe Mary Ball Washington Professor ofAmerican History at University College inDublin, Ireland. He also has directedAmerican Studies seminars in Brazil.

The Fulbright Bicentennial Chair inAmerican Studies was established in 1976 toinstitutionalize on a long-term basis theteaching of American history, culture andlanguage at the University of Helsinki. Theposition is an important resource to Finnishuniversities and has played a crucial role indeveloping the interdisciplinary approach toAmerican studies at the University ofHelsinki as well as at four other universitiesin Finland.
