BUTTER CONTAINER

The lid of this large (42cm high) butter 

container is similar to the upper part of certain 

phurbu (see H64 & H65). These two riders are 

probably benevolent spirits protecting the 

butter from curdling.

FASTENING RING

These fastening rings were used to stretch the cords that 

bound wedding trousseaus. The designs they are adorned with 

are similar to those found on ghurra's, as both probably come 

from the same region (the so called "middle­hills" of Nepal).

BUDDHIST EYESHADE

This Buddhist ritual eyeshade was collected in Mongolia, a 

geographical provenance which is confirmed by the style of the 

silver skulls. There is an obvious connection between the 

above and the eyeshade of the Buryat shaman on the left 

(Buryats are a sub­group of the Mongols living in Siberia).
