Two firsts on Gran Alacant thismonth. The first being the officialopening of the very first fountain andlandscaped roundabout near to theGran Alacant school. There was a great turn out to seeour Mayor Miquel Zaragoza, accompanied by our Gran AlacantCouncillor, Loreto Cascales, addressthe crowd and unveil the plaque andstart the fountain. Gnomes. This apart it is nice to seemany of the crops now coming tofruition.

When will all the dead trees be replaced along the road from theCommercial Centre down to the newschool? The Town Hall do have a 2 yearguarantee for replacing these deadtrees which have now been ordered,so we hope to see them replaced

Again, the same road. Why can´tthe council themselves, or the council ask the builders who left theground at the side of the road insuch a mess to do a bit of landscaping and planting........it currently looks like a dumpingground for the builders rubble. Meetings with people concerned tookplace 2 weeks prior to our meeting,to discuss various areas on our Urbanisation that needed attention. In some places the builders hadfenced areas off, but people werebreaking through the fences to lettheir dogs walk in them. They willcontinue to fence in, baracade access roads, and do their best totidy up the land in question.

We asked again why there had beenno action to our petition for a dogwarden. Although this was not giventhe go ahead, Loreto has had discussions with the police about theever increasing problem. A log wasshown to us of the reports back fromthe police, who on Feb 2 and 14-18and 27-31 January, had a blitz,when although they could not catchdogs in the act, they approached numerous owners and told then ofthe local laws concerning the toileting of their dogs. This is thefirst step before starting possibly tohand out stiff fines. Various mainareas of land were targeted duringthese dates and is on going.We expressed yet again, the concernof many Gran Alacant residents tothis continual problem.

What is happening about the newmarket? There is a great deal going on behind the scenes. This project is

What is the work going on at the busstop opposite Consum and Lidl? There was a problem with the wall atthe back of the covered area, whichhas now been sorted. Nothing morethan that.

We keep getting the question, whenwill we have a police office restoredon our urbanisation? As we said once before, the policerarely used the old one, but a decision has been made to place amobile unit on the not used taxi rankin front of the council offices, so thatthe police have a base.

Why no fountain on the first roundabout you come to on GranAlacant? This is something the Town Hall arekeen to do but there is a major problem building a fountain here, asone of the major pipeworks neededon Gran Alacant, is positioned underthis roundabout, making the costingvery expensive although there arestill ideas that are being worked on.

There is hope that our sports hall willbe opened in late spring. There cannot be an official opening as it isa rule that no inaugurations can takeplace within 2 months of the

forthcoming elections. The facilitieswill be second to none. You will beable to go to the hall to book any ofthe various facilities. Football, tennisand much more. The children at theGA school will also be able to movetheir out of school activities to thisnew venue.

¿Cuándo van a reemplazar losárboles muertos que hay en lacarretera que va del CentroComercial a la escuela?El Ayuntamiento tiene unagarantía de 2 años para reemplazar estos árboles muertos, se han pedido nuevos,así que esperamos verlos muypronto.

Lo han dejadohecho un desastre, parece unvertido de escombros.Han habido reuniones con laspersonas afectadas, 2 semanasantes de nuestra reunión mensual, para discutir sobrevarias zonas de nuestras urbanizaciones que necesitanatención.Los obreros han vallado ciertaszonas, pero la gente se siguemetiendo para pasear a susperros. Van a continuar cercando, cerrando caminos deacceso y limpiandotodo lo posible las tierras en cuestión.

Hemos preguntado otra vez,por qué no han tomado accióncon nuestra petición de un controlador de perros. Loretoha estado discutiendo con lapolicía sobre el problema. Noshan enseñado un registro de lapolicía, quienes el 14-18, 27-31de enero y 2 de febrero estuvieron en plena operación.No pudieron pillar a los perrosen acción; se aproximaron a losdueños para comentarles lasleyes locales con respecto a losperros. I took part in the Abel Anton 10k in October, and the Santa Pola Half Marathon on23rd January. These events were part of my training for the London Marathon on17th April, which I will be taking part in on behalf of Clic Sargent, the Chidren'sCancer Charity. I am also running in memory of my partner Alan, who died of cancer in October 2008, and also my Father and Brother. If you do not wantto go to the big fiesta in Valencia you canenjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Deniaor Pego.

this month is very quiet but in Valenciatakes place one of the biggest fiestas inSpain “las Fallas” the programme is toolong but there are parades, floral offerings, this event is very emotive,spectacular fireworks, dancing andmusic everywehere, and of course themost impressive “Mascletaes”(powerfulfirecrackers.

WHAT’S THAT INTHE CLOT?

There was a chap on the telly a whileago thundering on that unless westop driving cars and bookingRyanair flights, we are all doomed. Ifwe believe these so-called experts,in a few years time we will all beroasting in January and carbonisedcome summer on the Costa Blanca.Oh how we laughed at that back inthe UK in December as we dug ourcars out of the snowdrifts.The doomsayers wail that wildlife willgo to pot, with strange species appearing here there and every-where they shouldn’t be (anyoneseen a giraffe in the Clot recently?),as if wildlife populations neverchange unless affected by climatechange windbags.Of course bird and animal populations can change without anyhuman intervention, and to illustratethis, here’s one bird which you cansee in the Clot very easily, the Collared Dove. Now if you couldclimb into your Tardis and travelback 60 years or so, you wouldn’tsee a single Collared Dove eitherhere, or in Britain, or in-deed anywhere in main-land Europe. They wereAsiatic birds, mostly inIndia and thereabouts,but then somethingchanged. We don’t knowwhy – climate changehadn’t been invented,mad scientists weren’tfiddling with DNA andthere weren’t enoughnuclear tests going on togive us all two heads –but suddenly the world’spopulation of CollaredDoves underwent a dramatic increase andthey began to spreadinto Europe with startling speed.The first recorded nesting birds in Britainwere in 1955; theycaused considerable excitement at the timebut now hardly anyonegives them a second

glance as they are so common. It’sa similar situation in Spain, wherethey first arrived in 1974, and nowthere are up to 50,000 pairs in thecountry with their slightly irritating“coo-COO-coo” call which can beheard just about everywhere. TheSpanish call them Tórtola Turca, orTurkish Dove as they had a footholdin Turkey just before the time oftheir great expansion westwards.The closely-related Turtle Dove,which is a browner bird and whichonly lives here in the summermonths, is the only possible confusion species, but they are morenervous birds and only seen with difficulty, which is probably due tothe fact that they have been on thewrong end of hunter’s gun sights formany years as a food resource; theCollared Dove has yet to appear in apiquant sauce at your local restaurant.The chap in my photograph is neither landing nor taking off – he’seither having a stretch of his wings,or auditioning for an underarm deodorant advert.
