Location: Captains chair taken from the Minnehaha which was grounded on Scilly Rock in 1910. The Minnehaha was built by Harland and Wolff and launched in 1900. On 18 April 1910 the liner grounded on rocks on Bryher in the Isles of Scilly while en route from London to New York. She remained stranded until 13 May when two tugs managed to pull her off the rocks. The cattle on board were saved by swimming them onto the

Coast of the United States. She was launched in 1902 and holds the distinction of being the largest schooner and largest sail ing vessel without an auxiliary engine ever built. The Thomas W. Lawson was destroyed off the uninhabited island of Annet, in the Isles of Scilly, in a storm on December 14, 1907, killing all but two of her eighteen crew and a harbor pilot already aboard. Most of the Green men are in pairs or fours. Only one, near the entrance is clearly female. It may be an effigy of Ela of Salisbury,

who built it and ended her days there after her husband Willian Longsword ( a friend of Richard the Lion Heart) died fighting abroad. Ela had been a ward of Richard's mother Elinor of Acquitane, who spent time in Salisbury. Ela grew up in France, and and is said to have spent time at Fontrevault before marrying William and moving to Salisbury “

Glossary of terms found in the gazetteer Apse: If the wall behind the altar (the east wall) is curved it forms a semicircular are called an apse Ambulatory: A semicircular or polygonal aisle usually an ambulatory leads around the east end of the choir separating the choir from apses or

chapels Arcade: A series of arches supporting or set along a wall Architrave: Main beam above and across a set of carvings

Boss: An internal ornamental carving where the ribs of a ceiling or roof meet and cross Bracket: A support fixed to a wall Capital: The head of a pillar or column

Chancel: The part of a church containing the altar and choir seating Chancel Screen: Also known as a rood screen, a partition that separates the chancel from the nave. Catholic churches removed the rood screens after the council of Trent (1545-1563)

Chantry: A small chapel sometimes in a larger church Corbels: A piece of stone jutting out of a wall Corbel table: A projecting moulded string course supported by a range of corbels

Escutcheon: A shield Label: A dripstone over a window or door to deflect rain water Misericord: A decorative carved projection under a hinged seat to support a person when standing

Nave: The long central part of a church leading to the altar North porch: Also sometimes known as the devils door Piscina: A shallow basin placed near the altar for washing the communion vessels often referred to as a sacrarium by Roman Catholics although

this is actually the drain from the piscina Reredos: A screen behind the altar also sometimes refereed to as an altar piece Rood Screen: Also known a s a chancel screen

Sacrarium: The drain from a piscina Sacristy: The room area where communion equipment is stored Sedilia: Stone seats usually found on the south side of the altar

South porch: The usual entrance to a church with the tower to the west Spandrel: The spaces between the curve of arches Stop: see label

Transept: The ‘arm’ of a cross-shaped church. In medieval times it became necessary to increase the space near the chancel to accommodate the ever increasing quantity of clergy and choirs and so transepts were added to many churches. Tympanum: Decorative carving around an archway

Undercroft: A vault beneath the chancel and nave (and transept if there is one)

Original sources of sightings are detailed where possible. Where those sources have been books or other Gazetteers the abbrev iations for those

sources are detailed below. The English counties detailed for each individual sighting are currently being revised to show “approximately” the Ceremonial counties of England. I

am sure this will be understood by anyone who has looked into the changes that have been made to the counties of England over the years. I hope that simplifying the process by using (eventually) the 48 Ceremonial Counties as per 2009 (If anyone would like to take on the task of splitting Yorkshire correctly please contact me) we will at least all be looking in the same areas. I know I will never satisfy everyone (I’d sti ll like to use Wessex!!) but

unless another less complicated solution arises……I am also using the “old counties” or “preserved counties” of Wales and the 1975-1996 “Regions” of Scotland.

I am indebted to all of the following authors for treading the trail of the green man before me. It is due to them that I became fascinated by the enigma of the green man and began my quest to create the most detailed and accurate gazetteer produced. In particular Kathleen Basford, Ronald Millar and Clive Hicks provided me with wonderful resources and fuelled what has become a lifelong passion. I am also immensely grateful to Vanessa Piggott
