    Through the Global Campus(), the European Inter-UniversityCentre for Human Rights and Democratisation () coordinatesthe work among six Regional Masters programmes in Human

    Rights and Democratisation happening in ve continents. It isa unique network of more than a hundred universities with theoverall aim of educating human rights defenders committed toupholding the universal values of human rights and democracy.

    The signing of the Memorandum of Understandingon8January between the European Inter-UniversityCentre for Human Rights and Democratisation and the RegionalMasters Programmes in Human Rights and Democratisationrepresented by the Universities of Pretoria, Sydney, BuenosAires, Sarajevo and Yerevan marked the ofcial birth of theGlobal Campus and laid the foundation of this global network,with the support of the European Union.

    The learning and networking which the Global Campuspromotes, and the possibilities offered by a further integrationof the experience of the different Regional MastersProgrammes, are consistent with the vision of empoweringa new generation of rspecialists, to be endowed witha unique mix of academic and professional knowledgein a global framework.

    The Global Campus was created in the belief thatthe universal nature of human rights and democracyis best supported through global cooperation.At present, the is comprised of six -funded

    in Democracyand Human Rightsin South East Europe,coordinatedby the Universityof Bologna (Italy)and Sarajevo(Bosnia and Herzegovina)

    The seventh Regional Masters Programme of the ,namely the Master in Democratic Governance-HumanRights and Democracy with a focus on Northern Africaand the Middle East (), should see the lightin the beginning of 5and be integrated in the framework.

    The specic objectives of the are threefold:

    .to provide high-level education at Masters levelin human rights and democracy in different regionsof the world;

    . to spread awareness of the universal values enshrinedin the Declaration of Human Rights and enhancethe respect for human rights and democratic principlesboth across the regions involved and worldwide;

    3.to foster the outreach of the programmes toand beyond the academic world including decision-makers, s and other actors. This increased levelof cooperation multiplies the academic potential ofthe regions involved as well as the tools for promoting

    human rights and democracy worldwide.

    The network of gAlumniplay a further importantrole in the defence of human rights and in theprofessional development of the students. Theyhelp the graduates to stay connected to the andto enhance global network opportunities.

    The graduates of our Masters programmes areequipped to become human r ights defenders. TheirMasters studies cover a wide range of core disciplines law, social sciences, economic development and aim

    to complement their theoretical knowledge withpractical skills. They emerge as eld workers for humanrights issues advocates, protectors, defenders,committed to uphold universal values of human rightsand aware of global challenges. The strategic prioritiesof for the development of the are as follows:

    Consolidating thelevel of cooperationand integration of theeducational programmesjointly developed byand thes bymeans of a sustainedexchange of informationand know-how.

    Fostering the globalpresence and prole,as well as the outreachto different actors(policy-makers, civil-society, stakeholders)of such educationalprogrammes inhuman rights anddemocratisation.

    The Global Campus promotes the integrationof the Regional programmes through a wide arrayof activities such as joint events and conferences,joint research, exchange of lecturers and tutors,

    among which the following stand out:

    The Global ClassroomThe Global Classroom is an activity designedto strengthen the integration of the six MastersProgrammes and Diplomas in Human Rightsand Democratisation of the Global Campus.During a week-long event academics and studentsof the Global Campus gather together with the aimof enhancing discussion and exchange on a relevanthuman rights topic. The discussion is enrichedwith the participation also of international expertsincluding representatives of States, internationalinstitutions and civil society organisations.

    The Global Classroom fosters interactions amongstudents and academics of the different programmesby organising dedicated activities and providing

    a forum for discussion and additional tools ofacademic interaction. By doing so this activity intendsto develop a more integrated and multilateral formof academic coordination across the different curriculaof the Programmes in line with the guiding principlesand requirements as stated in the Memorandumof Understanding of the .

    The Research ProgrammeOne of the objectives foreseen for the Global Campusis that of progressively integrating the research activities

    of the institutions involved to fully exploit the potentialof coordination, exchange of knowledge and disseminationoffered by prominent and renowned academic researchers.The Research programme brings a focus on aninternationally relevant topic studied through the lensesof different regional perspectives.

    The Exchange of professorsThis activity aims at progressively putting in contactthe academics of each programme with the studentsand the curricula of the other Regional Masters.It envisages the exchange of one professor for eachRegional Masters, who shall teach a specic moduleand unit to the students of another Regional Mastersprogramme during the academic year. In this wayit is possible to further bridge the gaps betweentwo different programmes in terms of academictraditions, cultural and regional understanding and

    sharing of best practices and learning methods.

    The Internship ProgrammeSincethe Global Campus of Masters Programmesand Diplomas awards to its students who have alreadygraduated an internship within inter-governmental,governmental and non-governmental organisationsin the eld of human rights for a period of up to sixmonths. The primary goal of the internship is to givethe awarded graduates the opportunity to immediatelyput into practice the knowledge acquired throughoutthe academic year.
