Enter the new PRG Code of Honour. The idea behind the Code of Honour is that a clearer picture of a Paul Rooser is obtained so that Paul Roosers have something positive to strive for instead of something negative to steer clear of. In our school, we need to raise passionate men of character who will make a difference in the world, not timid boys who merely do nothing wrong – who wants that anyway?

Erekode sal positiewe bydrae tot PRG lewer

ChRis Van heLsdingen

So: Meet the new PRG Code of Honour!

As a true Paul Rooser, I declare that I honour the noble values and traditions of my school. I am proud of my school and my appearance; I respect others and conduct myself as a true gentleman.

I honour my parents, teachers and other authority figures uncondition ally so that I can grow in obedience.

Relationships are important to me and I add value by encouraging others, knowing that I form a daily part of Paul Roos history.

I live with passion, integrity and humility.

I reject passivity, mediocrity and self-centredness and I accept responsibility for my role as cultivator.

I choose to do what is right and I strive for excellence in all areas…

…in order to be worthy of our motto, Semper Splendidior.

Paul Roos gymnasium has always been an institute of outstanding values and morals, taught in various ways. We believe in tradition. Recently, however, our school has implemented a few changes as far as certain tradi-tions are concerned.

These changes should be embraced as a new way of doing things, although the question probably arises as to why our traditions have had to be adapted. The answer lies in the fact that the Department of Education expects of schools to institute and maintain policies that are in keeping with the Constitution.

So: things have changed to a certain extent.

But change is always good, for the simple reason that it implies progress, and progress is something that everyone and every institution needs. It most certainly does not mean that what we stand for no longer exists.

“There will be quite a lot of Paul Roosers that will remember me for what I did, because what happens on tour stays on tour” – in the words of none other than the legend himself.

Oom Pine continues: “As a guy from a reformatory, I have a passion for non-destructive naughty boys. Having been associated with Paul Roos as a teacher, a referee, a supporter and parent to all ... what I shall miss most of all are my Paul Roos boys.”

In answer to the question: “Oom Pine, what is your profession?” his standard answer is “Ahoe! Ahoe!”.

’n Groetwoord van Oom Pine: “Thanks for all the support from teachers, parents, friends and all the Paul Roos boys throughout the years. Semper Splendidior!”

Aritit … Oom Pine!

Oom Pine, die lewende legende…

A new chapter has begun in PRG’s efforts to shape Paul Roosers into men of honour and character. Usually, parents attend parent evenings to discuss their son’s academical progress. However, on 2 September, 130 PRG fathers gathered to discuss their roles in guiding their sons to authentic manhood.

Senzo is glo deur Me.

Sy onderwerp was aborsie.

The problems faced by the South African musician faces never seem to change. I do not believe that it has anything to do with our local sound not being something that would please international ears. I believe that it is the pressure that comes with earning enough money to make a living, and continuing to deliver a product for the fans that leads to the downfall of most local groups. The answer to this is simple: a change of attitude towards managing a band.

Professionalism is what sets successful international acts apart from the local potential successes. A band is first and foremost a business, when one’s intention is to earn a living out of it. It should therefore be managed like a business.

One band has demonstrated how combining professionalism and a

Mense, mense, mense!

Super Sirlion was my keuse – mediumgaar, natuurlik.

sincere love and understanding for music can lead to inevitable success.

Zebra and Giraffe have just released The Inside, their second full-length album. Their 2008 debut Collected Memories garnered local and international acclaim and saw them win a 2009 SAMA (South African Music Award) for Best Rock Album, nominated for three SAMAs in the categories Best Newcomer, Best Album Packaging and MTN Record of the Year for “The Knife”. They also won the MTV MAMA Award for Best Alternative Act.

One would easily expect their next album to be an inevitable letdown, as we have come to expect from local bands. But complacency is for bands with less ambition and bloody-minded dedication to their craft. They have used the momentum built up over the last couple of years to propel them into the studio with tunes and enthusiasm to

spare. Greg Carlin (vocals + guitar), Alan Shenton (guitar), Andrew Maskell (bass), Darren Leader (drums) and new member Michael Wright (Keyboards) recorded the majority of the album at RBF Studios in Johannesburg and it was produced by the acclaimed Darryl Torr, who also produced Collected Memories.

The album was mixed by the renowned Cenzo Townshend, who has worked with U2, Snow Patrol, Kaiser Chiefs, Editors, Graham Coxon, Babyshambles and Florence and the Machine.

The Inside showcases the energy, depth and intensity of this band, whose music is accessible, radio- and party-friendly without having sold out to mass-produced drivel. It is slick, with

flawless execution, and is intricate and skilful. Although the lyrics are far less audible due to there being more sound in terms of instruments, they show more maturity compared to their previous work.

Professionalism, dedication, and attitude of accepting only the best, is what still sets them apart from any

other band currently hoping to enter the international music scene. Those fortunate enough to have seen them perform live, will agree with me when I say that the quality of their performance comes second only to the maturity that seems to lurk behind their sound.

I truly believe that the rest of the local music

scene can take a leaf from Z&G’s book, as they have shown what can be achieved when one refuses to settle for an average product, in the process building a fan base that will remain faithful, as I, along with many others, am sure there is a lot more to come from Greg Carlin and company.

Mense, mense, mense! Ryneveld 5 is ongetwyfeld jou nuwe gunstelingrestaurant...

No, Semper did not interview a property development but a South African band relatively new to the scene.

The members of Lonehill Estate are, Nathan Ro, Sunshine D, Mark van den Berg and Dave Waugh.

Their “official” genre classification would be Pop Rock but they have a whole range of different songs, from acoustic to techno.

I would imagine if the Teletubbies were to settle down and get real jobs they would sound pretty much like Lonehill Estate.

We got the exclusive interview and asked some questions.

• How did you guys start? Did you go to school together or just randomly meet?

Nathan and Dave met at a battle of the bands in 2002. They were both playing in different bands (Cracked Plastic and Born Itchy) Dave liked Nathan’s blue hair and leopard pants and Nathan was wowed by Dave’s solo, which was the theme of Star Wars.

When Born Itchy broke up, Nathan joined Cracked Plastic as the bassist until that band was whittled away too.

They met Sunny when one of their drummers left. He liked tea and with a name like Sunshine D this made him the obvious choice.

They then met Mark when he used to play in Waiting Room (a band, not an actual waiting room!) and were blown away by his “ness.” It’s a small industry so the best way to get a band is to go watch bands… and then steal the members you favour.

• A question I’m sure almost all aspiring artists would love to hear answered is how did you guys eventually get noticed?

I suppose we have Reality TV to thank for that one. Nathan came second in Project Fame in 2004, which gave him a lot of face time on African TV screens. Although as soon as the show ended, the band went largely unnoticed until this year when Gangstar got playlisted on radio.

• How did you get your name?It is the name of a wealthy suburb in JHB. It

was the only name that didn’t sound like a band name … our other top favourites were Teenage Mutant Ninja Band or He-man and the Band of the Universe … so… I think we did good!

• how would you explain your music to someone who hasn’t listened to your band?

It is banging, mischevious rock. Like early Justin Bieber … before he sold out.

• Any future things you would like to mention? tours? singles?

We have just finished recording our second single TECHNOBAND which is something really different so we hope it kicks as much glutus maximus as Gangstar.

• And finally I would like to know where you got the inspiration for gangstar? the one part (“My body’s nobody’s body but mine”) sounds vaguely familiar to the sex ed we had at my primary school …

Well as Gangstar as we feel sometimes, Lonehill Estate is the kind of band that prefers tea to any alcoholic beverage, pancakes are our drugs, playstation is our “choking on our vomit.” So the song is basically about a girl that makes one feel Gangstar despite the aforementioned things. The sex ed line was inspired by a shy, very disease-free way of living. Plus it’s good advice!

Lonehill Estate – Gangstar

IN PERSPEKTIEF

En dan voel ek so effens mismoedig.

Pride in yourself and your school will have you doing right in the tough times. Respect for others and yourself will have you treat others the way you want them to treat you. Gentlemanship will have you being consistently gentle and kind and not barbaric and crude. That is what is called true Pride, Respect and Gentlemanship.

Do we really understand what is meant by Pride, Respect and Gentlemanship or have we let our tainted and desensitized eyes see this in a different light? Pride is seen as an excuse to be arrogant. Respect is evidently read as disre-spect. Gentlemanship is seen to be “uncool” and barbaric and crude behaviour seems to be the in thing at the moment.

I take a look at this behaviour and find that in thy context of the world of today it seems perfectly fine and acceptable – but who are we? According to whose scale are we rating ourselves? To that of the world around us? Or do we set the standard and the trend? Semper Splendidior means “always better” or “always more excellent” and so we too must not settle for medi-ocrity

So: are we the suckers who blindly follow the path set out for us by others? If so, we are failing to see that we are killing off our own identities and destroying our standards.

Reading through a poem I found this famous saying that made me see things differently, “ And so I came to a place in the woods where two roads led in different directions; I chose the one less travelled by and that made all the difference.”

Now is the time to make a stand gentlemen, because if you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything. And thus far we have done well in standing up for the suc-cess and honour of our school. But Albert Einstein said, “Rather try to be a man of value than to be a man of success.”

So los jy beide probleme bitter vinnig op.

Vanjaar het ek die boek Tuesdays with Morrie by ’n besonderse vriendin present gekry.

love for a woman, or grief for a loved one, or what I’m going through, fear and pain from a deadly illness. If you hold back on the emotions – if you don’t allow yourself to go all the way through them – you can never get to being attached, you’re too busy being afraid. You’re afraid of the pain, you’re afraid of the grief. You’re afraid of the vulnerability that loving entails. But by throwing yourself into these emotions, by allowing yourself to dive in, all the way, over your head even, you experience them fully and completely. You know what pain is. You know what love is. You know what grief is. And only then can you say, ‘All right. I have experienced that emotion. I recognise that emotion. Now I need to detach from that emotion for a moment.’”

So nou staan ek in ongeloof voor my opdrag: ek moet groet. En as ek my teorie gestand doen, sal ek erken dat daar ongelooflike hartseer by hierdie taak betrokke is.

‘Don’t be sad because it’s over, be happy because it happened’.

1. Probleme is nodig. Leer daaruit.2. Vind jouself en bly by wat jy ontdek

het.3. Wees positief!4.

5. Kyk altyd vir behoeftes rondom jou. Daar is baie.

6. Wees altyd nederig. Sonder uit son-dering.

7. Romeine 12:28.

Zero.

Met hierdie woorde groet ek julle. Dit was vir my ’n voorreg.

“And so faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

FarewellThe earth is a big place, but when you

see it fitting onto an A3 printout on your wall it does seem rather small...

We often think of the world as a collection of continents and countries rather than a collection of millions of spaces. Spaces come in all shapes and sizes: some are gardens, others apartments; some are restaurant tables and others are bedrooms, and every space has its own atmosphere, its own stimulus on the mind. Big spaces always consist of many smaller spaces and no individual space is ever bigger

than a microscopic dot on the map of the earth. In some macro spaces there are mountains, in others deserts, in others oceans, in others cities. And inside these spaces there are many individual spaces and collections of spaces that different forms of life call home.

Even as you read, the same stories are repeating themselves endlessly as the lives of the millions of unsuspecting creatures that live in these spaces, one generation after the other. When you think of the world in terms of spaces, it suddenly becomes a much bigger and more complicated place than before and all of a sudden there seems to be a much greater potential for finding the perfect space in which to spend your own life.

Often, however, people forget that the spaces they know are not the only spaces that exist, and they consequently develop a naïve world-view.

We are mortals and our time in the spaces of the earth is limited. The human species pops out thousands of new creations every day and most of the children that reach adulthood become

part of the myriad grown-up faces you see outside your car window when you drive through the streets: all part of the working, begging hands. Every day thousands of people are born and thousands of people die without your knowledge, your celebration or your mourning.

The sadness we feel when humans that were close to us die and the importance that we attach to their names is merely a product of the intricate social behaviour of our species. All life has the same value for nature, but not all life has the same value to our lives. Biology teaches us that humans live and die like any other form of animate existence, never to live again, and this is logically true, no matter of what illusions our clever minds convince us. This rests on the fact that without your brain you are nothing, and no brain can survive death. Cleverness does not exempt us from reality. All life is governed by the same natural laws. A human’s death is the same as that of an ant, even though a single human is relevant and

important to many more lives in a more complicated way than the life of a single ant – or is it?

Behind walls we read out of textbooks that do not teach us about the world and about life and we laugh at our jokes and we wish that the school bell would sound off for the last time so that we can join the rest of the world that is not always regulated, not always shepherded, not always cramped in, not always doing time, eating lunch out of boxes and sleeping on arms.

But when we look at the offices and the workplaces for which school supposedly prepares us, we realise that we were mistaken to expect freedom from our futures in the modern world and that school is only the beginning. This realisation shatters the last bits of our childhood idealisations. Today school is the obligation that keeps us from living our lives the way we want to. Tomorrow it will be the need for money to pay the rent, to buy food, to survive that forces us to conform. Slavery has not disappeared, it has merely shifted shapes. Before, men were dependent on their masters for food and shelter; today they are dependent on their masters for money with which to buy food and shelter. It so happens that we are sometimes, just like the generations of humans before us, stuck in spaces and situations that we would prefer not to be in, and it is frustrating.

The space we live and grow up in – our environment – shapes us and our lives and is determined by its atmosphere and its characteristics: the people that live there, the traditions that exist there, the views and opinions that are aired there and the way of survival that happens there.

It is interesting to think that if we were born in Ancient Greece, most of us would have conformed to their society. We would have worn strange clothes, we would have worshipped many gods and we would have sacrificed animals in their honour, and all of us would have had ourselves a healthy team of

slaves without feeling guilty about it, just because everybody was doing it. Human life has an infinite set of possibilities, and it is the movement of the masses that determines the nature of the science-fiction world of yesterday that we live in today.

One cannot always follow the movement of the people when searching for happiness, especially when the views of the masses are so misguided, and one cannot always be happy in a world governed and expanded by misguided minds either. Life is an individual thing. Most of us have our own ideas and philosophies that seem better, easier, and less a waste of life than the current Western lifestyle that the Buddhist monks call the pinnacle of all ignorance. But we are chained to this existence because we do not know how to survive otherwise.

Most humans accept that they cannot escape the fate of the masses and they buckle up, fortify themselves, and march on through the chaos and pain of modern life in a confusing desire to conform on the one hand and the need for freedom on the other hand. Some try to make quick money that they can use to find life and exotic freedom elsewhere. Some are privileged in the sense that their passions are marriageable with the supply-and-demand principle of the system and that their natural performance makes the masses reach for their wallets, which allows them to conform without conforming as they do what they want to do in life while simultaneously being successful at modern survival. Some people convince themselves that they are free and independent, even when they are not, and they do not realise that they are fooling themselves. Most people do not think about life too much at all and they conform or rebel, based on weak arguments.

After matric, our lives will play out in many different ways. You see, we all see the world and life in a different light.

ALGEMEEN ● GENERAL

WiLLeM WiLKen

Should Garfield fall from the fifth storey of a building (heaven preserve!), would he have a bigger chance of surviving than a cat that falls from the tenth storey?

As paradoxical as it may seem, the answer is “no”. This is because the other cat would have had more time to achieve its terminal velocity and stop accelerating. However, the other cat would more likely than not sustain serious injuries.

When an object falls, it accelerates at a rate of approximately 9,81 metres per second due to the

downward attraction of gravity; this means that Fg (the gravitational attraction) is greater than the air resistance. However, as an object accelerates, Ffriction (the force of friction due to air) increases and eventually becomes equal to the gravitational force, inhibiting further acceleration and causing the object to fall at a constant speed.

There are a few factors that determine an object’s terminal velocity – these include the mass of the object, the density of the fluid or gas through which it is moving, the acceleration due to gravity, the object’s projected area and drag.

Skydivers have a lot to learn from Garfield and company

The mad scientistout a day you have spent panting, sweating and bleeding – training to become fitter and stronger. A few shots, a beer or two ... and there goes your week of gruelling gym sessions or all those hours suffering around the running track. It is easier to lift a drink

than a weight, and much nicer to spend time in the bar or on the dance floor than hours running round that track.

Well, all those hours could be gone in few seconds. Alcohol dehydrates the body, leaving you thirsty (babalas) the next morning. The lack of water or fluid could have you feeling dizzy, even vomiting. This damages your muscles, making them weaker and softer all over again. Surely this cannot be good for you.

Your liver also suffers severe damage every time your body is intoxicated. And the damage can never be reversed.

Many “traditions” among peers presumably “entitle” groups of friends to become completely intoxicated, to

the point that their bodies can no longer handle the alcohol and need to get rid of it – and not very elegantly either. This condition is known as alcohol poisoning. But before you enforce these “traditions” ... think what the overindulgence is doing to you or to you friends.

And although these traditions seem like good fun, also remember this:

alcohol brings out what people like to call “the real you”, and this could lead to many things going wrong.

Alcohol damages your memory nerves, often leaving you feeling hung-over the next day and, worst of all, neither remembering nor realising what you have been up to – only to find out the next day that you have revealed most of your secrets or done something beyond your imagination, in other words, that you have unveiled “the ugly truth” and have made a complete fool of yourself in full view of your so-called friends and possibly your girl-friends. Have you ever thought about that?

So before you start buying that beautiful lady with the dreamy eyes one shot after another, and before you start drinking out of control again – stop for a moment and consider this: is it worth wasting a week of training? Is it worth wasting money on damaging your body? Is it worth getting drunk enough to damage your reputation as well as your liver beyond recognition?

MigaeL gRobLeR

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila ... flaw! If you are a light weight that is. still a boy – which all of us really are.

Alcohol is the poisonous drink that all of us are paying for to damage our health. Is it worth it?

Initially, those who have experienced the so-called “sensation” of alcohol like to call it a good experience.

But is it really worth your while to buy yourself and that beautiful lady standing next to you beer or shots? One beer equals the amount of carbohydrates – calories, in other words – in a loaf of bread. Every shot you drink cancels

Alcohol: the ugly truth

Feite oor alkohol volgens about.com:

The question, however, is whether terminal velocity would be low enough for the cat to survive the fall. That of course differs from cat to cat and from fall to fall (so maybe Garfield is not a good example here!).

A study (conducted by two New York veterinarians on cats who fell from high buildings) concluded that the injuries sustained increase linearly with the length of the fall, but that after about seven storeys the severity of the injuries levelled off (and most cats did not die).

An additional reason for the cat sustaining more injuries as a result

of a five-storey fall is that the cat feels that it is accelerating, so it experiences stress and, in a reflex reaction, either extends its legs downwards or knots up, causing it to be more susceptible to injuries.

However, when the cat has reached terminal velocity, its organs of balance (its vestibular system) is less stimulated, the cat relaxes and extends its legs more horizontally. This further increases drag and hopefully the cat lands successfully without

too many serious injuries. This concept of terminal velocity

is also applicable in skydiving, where the skydivers attempt to decrease their drag and increase their terminal velocity, so that they may achieve greater speeds.

It is interesting to note that the world skydiving speed record is 988km/hr (this record is held by Joseph Kittinger).

So: although it may seem that Garfield is less likely to survive such a high fall than a normal cat, as he is slightly obese – we have to remember that Garfield is ... well, Garfield!

Are you a loser?RUan CiLLieRs

i challenge you to face yourself! are you brave enough to ask... to dare... courage!

Do you have what it takes? [Take a moment and think about this question.]

She is so beautiful, but… I want to score the winning try, but… I want to be proud of my academics, but… That mountain peak is calling me... I am going to... Yes...BUT!!!That BIG Bully BUT-HEAD!!!It is 30 minutes before the sun sets and

the feeling of regret slowly poisoned my mind. But every minute counted, I argued ... there was no time to waste! A small excuse that might find sympathy when people ask why I did not checked the map regularly. Wind speeds of 100km had been confirmed. Two hours ago we were laughing when the wind caught me off-guard with a high tackle.

Definitely a yellow card offence, especially if it was an Irish ref!

I had, until then, never under stood how people can die on Table Mountain. What a cunning beast: a crocodile awaiting its prey! You slowly draw towards the much-needed water, aware of the danger ... but without taking the courage to drink you will die anyway, right? Three days is what the experts say ...

Three hours in the dark, like cavemen, we fought our way through the fynbos (renamed to dikbos in my dictionary). Our torches divided their attention to navigating the maze and looking for any sign of hope. With a warrior-like victory shout we raised our torches when we found the exit – ironically down Skeleton Gorge.

Always wondering where the name of the place originated, we triumphantly mocked our predecessors who had not made it, who had been swallowed by the beast. “Pride comes before the fall”, the great King Solomon exclaimed long before his own demise. But as we

descended, we were suddenly caught off-guard where the water from the rain storm rushed from the mountain and down the gorge, forming a mighty river that devoured our path to freedom.

I have heard before that people say in your darkest moment you become true to yourself. Now I knew who I really was ...

With all hope lost, we had to set aside our pride and humbly admit that we did not have it all together. We could not conquer this beast alone. Asking our heavenly Father for help, I felt burdened by the thought of the prodigal son wanting to return home, but fearing that Father would not welcome him back.

But the Father did embrace his prodigal sons: we were suddenly inspired by a moment of wisdom, convinced that we did not deserve this gift. Our eyes

opened and we saw an unofficial small exit, a route of which we were not aware and which was not indicated on the map. So easily a narrow path can escape one’s view...

When we finally touched down on safe ground, barely escaping the claws of the beast, we felt alive, inspired ... and we vaguely knew what it feels like to be true conquerors: men who live their dreams instead of faking it by playing XBox games.

But humbly we admitted that although we had won the battle, we could not claim the victory for ourselves. There is a peaceful place where the grace of the Father gives you wisdom to face your challenges. In Him one finds the strength to overcome the trap of the safe but deadly path that we call the rat race ... the courage to dare the purpose in your heart.

In this world, where we face our everyday battles, chaos rules. But my heart is calm, finding rest in the grace and the strength of our Father ... a fine line between the two is the path you seek to tread ...

Lyk my KyleL gaan net nie oor MeganB kom nie.

Hy soek haar nou terug, want hy wil haar balkie dra.

J o ’ h a A - L e -zanneH???

Roosers is op ’n all time low omdat hy nou JGoosen se bed leen.

On their way to Bloem, somewhere on the N1, was TristanG and his bakkie, which somehow got itself into a bit of the brown stuff, so deep that the injured had to sit detention for their troubles.

Let wel: Grey se ref, Jaco Kotze, se nommer is 082 927 3995, feel free.

KeeganG’s jogging with KarlaV is finally paying off. PierreDV +

40 days = Lyn-MariD happy.

VanZylD is

gelukkig Nova is agter hom, veral nadat ChristofS

hom beet gekry het. RobertO en

JanaN oefen saam gimnastiek ...

verbasing net ’n houtpaal was.

lot of speed. Then it is up to the surfer to get as high up in the air as possible and land a trick ... hopefully.

The result is an awesome display of surfing skills.

The cho-sen few took the field. The ten sion was un-forgettable. We were ready to demolish Grey Bloemfontein.

After the first five minutes, three penalties and a lucky bounce of the ball, Paul Roos had conceded 16 points, all coming from Grey’s flyhalf. The men in maroon then shifted up a gear and two tries later, including a shimmy by JP Lewis, had them back in the game. Unfortunately this pattern would set the tone of the match: Grey’s flyhalf was out there kicking penalties while Paul Roos scored one scintillating try after the other.

Renier Marais’s try finished off a round of brilliant team work and Thsotso Mbovane’s try was nothing but a sheer display of raw talent.

We captured the lead at the death of the match. The gees was reaching boiling point. But two fifty-fifty penalties and a soft try later the game was lost. Final score: 29-41 to Grey.

I would like the thoughts on Grey 2010 to be those of quiet confidence. We might have lost according to the scoreboard and some might say that is all that matters, but any person who attended the game would know that is not the case.

Well done Paul Roos. You have done yourselves proud, gentlemen!

9 september 2010 started off just like any other saturday, but there was something in the air – or rather in the waves: South Africa’s first Jet Ski Assist surfing contest.

The waves looked small at Strand Beach – not that it mattered, though. This was no ordinary surf contest. Wolf Alley, a recently launched surfing lifestyle website, hosted the first competition of this kind in South Africa.

The idea is quite simple: a jet-ski pulls a surfer towards a wave, giving him a

our very own Riyaad henry (18, and in Matric) recently represented the sa U/19 cricket team in Zim-babwe.

“Like father like son” is an expression often heard in the in the Henry household: Riyaad is not the first Henry to represent South Africa at cricket.

His father, Omar Henry, was the first player of colour to represent the South African cricket team, making his international debut at the surprising age of 41.

Having had the privilege of knowing Riyaad for a very long time, this reporter can certainly say that Riyaad’s has wanted to wear the green and gold for most of his life.

He has been playing cricket from a very young age: acoording to his mother, Riyaad could play a flamboyant cover drive almost at the same time he strated walking.

Riyaad attended Rhenish Primary school. In his Grade 7 year he became a something of a hero by becoming one of the few Rhenishers to represent Boland in cricket and hockey at U/13 level.

But this was not the last time that provincial cricket would hear the name Riyaad Henry: after arriving at Paul Roos in 2005 he went on to represent the Boland U/15 and U/17 teams.

In 2009 Riyaad took his game to the next level by being selected for the Cape Cobras and the SA U/17 team respectively. Riyaad was then included in the SA U/19 provisional World Cup

squad but unfortunately did not make the final team that played in the World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year.

However, Riyaad received the great news that he was named in Ray Jenning’s 15-man team that underwent a tour to Zim babwe in June this year 2010.

His lifelong dream had finally become a reality.

In the past few years, the term “downhill mountain biking” has re-defined extreme sports as we know it.

The sad truth is that very few of us really know what it is all about. As life goes on for the average sportsman, the nature of extreme sports is constantly evolving to accommodate the demands of all passionate participants and enthusiastic spectators. These sports are the pace setters for the adrenaline junkies, the mountain peaks for adventure seekers and the recklessness of the stupidly brave.

Downhill mountain biking is undoubtedly growing into becoming

the new face of extreme sports in the Western Cape. Riders contributing to this regime is Julien de Marigny, Kyle Fletcher, Christiaan Slachbauer, Andries Blake en Josua Blom.

Racing down a mountain at immense speeds is not everyone’s idea of a leisurely Sunday outing. But this, in the absence of sanity, is what defines downhill mountain bikers.

This sport dissents most other sports is that the term “focus” could be used most appropriately. A cross-country rider would focus on endurance training whereas a downhill mountain biker would go dirt jumping.

Downhill presents many technical challenges and the only way to depose

these challenges is to get comfortable on your bike. Style is technique and technique is everything, and what better way to become proficient in this sport other than “nailing some sick trick jumps.”

Extreme sportsmen are a species unknown to most. They live among you. They spend their lives under a veil of correlated understanding. They cannot describe in simple terms why they do what they do. What they do is who they are, and very few will understand what drives them to these extremes.

Given the inherent dangers and inevitable injuries they do not even understand this fully themselves – they just do it!

Water polo star JJ stegmann has this year reached an all-time high in his water polo career.

In August JJ Stegmann was chosen to be a reserve for the South African U/18 water polo team that will be taking part at the Tri-Nations in New Zealand this coming December.

He made his debut for the PRG first team in Grade 10 (2008), at which point he had already competed at Nationals for Boland/Western Province.

In 2009 he was elected to play for the U/19B Western Province team who again participated at Nationals.

At the beginning of this year he was promoted to the WP U/19A team who finished third in the open Currie Cup.

“Water polo is a tough sport, especially in Grades 8 and 9.

Victories are scarce, but determination is compulsory if you want to become the team that everyone dreads”, JJ comments.

His remarkable achievements have moved JJ one step forward to an exceptional goal, that of springbok polo player.

“I would like to thank my team mates, especially the matrics, Reini, Du Toit, Phillip, Dirk, Paul and Jano, as well as my parents, coach Tom Smit and manager Coert van Zijl, without whom none of the above would have been possible.”

The school wishes JJ the best of luck for the Tri-Nations in New Zealand at the end of the year.

it was that time of the year again.

Paul Roos was suffering from Grey fever, the annual phenomenon that comes with a variety of symptoms and side effects: overflowing gees, intense training and goose bumps while watching SuperSport videos.

When the time finally arrived to descend upon the College, every single boy was ready to go, confident and keen to show, once again, the power of the Maroon Machine.

As always the contest against our old foes was tough. We nevertheless dominated the activities on Friday 20 August, except in squash and soccer.

We clubbed them at golf (five out of the six teams won) and there was a string of victories in the tennis. Not PRG team lost, and the first team did not concede even one match.

Our hockey teams stuck to the great form shown throughout the season: only two losses, two draws and eight wins. The first team had a very close encounter.

Gys Steyn and his men were unfortunate not to score the winner after enjoying most of the chances. It was an exhilarating game. The team inspired us, the cheerleaders caught on and Paul Roos resounded in response.

But we all know that there were fifteen men who were waiting to represent the hopes of the entire school on Saturday 21 August.

When one thinks of the sport of boxing, international icons like Mohammed Ali and Mike Tyson immediately spring to mind - but Paul Roos Gymnasium is soon to have its own boxing star called Sugar Ray: Ranen Swilling, or “Ray”, as he is known to his friends, is in Grade 11 and has been an avid boxer for the past year and a half.

Ray trains for two hours every day at the Amandla Boxing Gym in the Lwandle township near Strand. In his

short but fulfilling boxing career Ray has had four proper fights, of which he won three, narrowing losing the last one.

Ray admits that he would have never even thought of getting into a boxing ring had it not been for his older brother, who introduced him to the sport two years ago.

Ray looks up to men like Gerrie Coetzee and Mohammed Ali and one day hopes to “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee”. - Aashiq Rhode

Dylan Raubenheimer is ranked number 2 at U/16 level by the South African Golf Foundation, and 5th as an U/18.

He missed out on selection for the SA U/16 team that is playing in Italy at the moment because he only played in nine of the Foundation’s tournaments this year, instead of in the mandated 10.

It was a personal setback for him, but it turned out good for his school, Paul Roos Gimnasium, in the end because he was the star of their team that won the St John’s International Schools Tournament over the weekend.

Raubenheimer was the best individual on show on three of the four days of play, but the St John’s tournament is purely a team event and he is quick to acknowledge the contribution of his teammates in their success. Dylan is only in Grade9, so there’s a long way to go, but he has already set his sights on a career as a professional golfer.

“I am hoping to get a scholarship to go to the United States when I finish school and to play the College circuit. Then I want to turn professional.”

Go big, or go home”.

Seven out-of-the-ordinary Paul Roosers take part in enduro-racing, one of the most exhausting sports around. These bravehearts are Henning Human, who is currently 2nd in the Western Cape, Johnny Carinus, Johan Carinus, Hanno Laker, Christiaan Hellinger and Christoff Steyn, all of whom have represented the school at six regional races this year.

Enduro-racing is one of the most exhausting sports around, and perseverance is the key word to success. Riding a 450cc quad bike is not something that should be taken up lightly, especially not when you are covering a distance of at least 150km in full kit for three hours – an experience that can be compared with a type of mini-Dakar.

Although it is a very dangerous sport and injuries like broken ribs en bloody arms are common to these races,

our riders have been blessed: so far casualties include only a once-off quad-roll, resulting in a broken rear axle and a fractured frame.

The quad and its modifi-cations play a big role in the success of the racer, but it is the experience of the racer that clinches the victories. During the course of the race rocks, logs, rivers and ditches are common obstacles and one has to depend entirely on technique and experience.

The Paul Roos enduro-racers prefer to compete against their rivals as a team –

even though enduro-racing is in essence an individual sport. They are planning to mark their pit stop with the school flag at the next competition.

Paul Roos is lucky to have these men; so if you feel like doing something extremely exciting, go out and support our enduro-racing team.

Perseverance, technique and experience clinch the victory

Gys Steyn, heard by many but known by few. Deputy head boy of Paul Roos Gymnasium, captain of the 1st hockey as well as the 1st cricket team.

Full colours for academics, cricket and hockey.

A blazer full of badges weighs him down, and he wears an honours tie so riddled with achievements that it almost reaches down to his socks. Gys is an example to all Paul Roosers. We found out more about what makes Gys who he is and what he plans to do with all his talent in the future.

Where do you find the inspiration to work so hard?

I believe that one should always give 100 per cent in everything you do. So you have to be selective where you want to commit yourself and then never give less than your absolute best!

did your achievements come as a surprise to you, or were they always loitering around the back of your mind?

I am very grateful for all the achievements and opportunities I have experienced over the years. I see achievements and awards as recognition of hard work that has paid off. Some

have obviously surprised me, but one can never get too comfortable.

now that you have achieved so much, what are you going to do afterschool?

I would like to go into the business world.

Next year I shall be studying B. Comm. Investment Management at University of Stellenbosch.

since you started at Paul Roos and up until now, do you see yourself as someone who had a plan for all your achievements or do you just take things as they come?

I definitely don’t plan everything too far ahead, although one should have a rough idea. Always do everything to the best of your ability in your immediate circumstances.

What of Paul Roos gymnasium stands out the most for you?

That there is a place for everyone at Paul Roos Gymnasium and that is probably the reason why we are so good in so many activities.

Looking back at your time at Paul Roos, what achievements have meant the most to you?

Elizabeth for the first time. Being granted the responsibility and honour of serving as deputy head boy of Paul Roos Gymnasium.

Who is your role model? I learn just as much from negative

role models, how not to do something or how not to react under specific circumstances. Positive roles models include my parents, teachers, team mates and friends.

if you could say one thing to the youngsters of Paul Roos, what would it be?

Use all opportunities to the best of your ability and, most important of all, enjoy the experience at the same time.

Gholf is nou so populêr by die skool dat meer as sewentig seuns
