COMMENT

The slogan – heart, soul and mind of a company

‘The best or nothing’ from Mercedes-Benz, or Ritter Sport’s ‘Quality. Chocolate. Squared.’ Two slogans that just about everyone knows, as they have prov-en themselves over the years and anchored them-selves positively in the collective memory. Both slogans achieve this through certain indispensable characteristics: they are distinctive, credible and polarising. But what is actually the purpose of an advertis-ing slogan? It is meant not only to grab customers’ attention, but also to make a claim. An advertising slogan formulates the philoso-phy of a company and asserts its self-conception

– as succinctly and memorably as possible. Heart, soul and mind, all in one. We are seeking an advertising slogan for binder. This can’t be based simply on a gut instinct or on casual wordplay with the company name, but rather on the values that set us apart – qualities such as being down to earth, reliable and a family company. Do you have a good idea? We look forward to hearing from you, at: [email protected]

On that note, we wish you inspiring reading!Marketing

Dear readers,

The year 2018 was good – very good. I want to thank you very much for your dedication and motivation. My outlook for the future remains optimistic. We have now exceeded the 1,000 employee mark at the Neckar-sulm site, are planning further growth, want to strengthen our good position and have our sights set on new mar-kets. Above all, however, I am deligh-ted to be launching a new era for our company with the new building. In this issue, we continue the rea-ding series on historical product de-velopments, offer a review of the after-

sales meeting in November and the first binder Technology Days. Additionally, we will bring you up to date on what has happened at our affiliated compa-nies binder precision parts, binder in-trobest, binder UK and binder South East Asia.

Enjoy reading this issue!Sincerely,

Markus Binder, General Manager

Reading series:

‘Historical product developments’ – not everything is ‘off the rack’

Since production of circular connectors began in 1968, binder has made a name for itself all over the world in terms of quality, among

other things. Many product series have continuously been in demand for decades and are a proven source of revenue. But the individual de-

velopment of connectors based on customer requests is also part of the ‘binder DNA’.

>>>With this issue, we continue our reading series on

the subject of historical product developments in

which we present special product developments in binder history, developments that are not commonplace. How did certain projects come to

be carried out? Which application areas were in de-

mand? What were the quantities?

The 50-contact zero insertion force (ZIF) contact bank for printed circuit boards was developed in 1978 for Bosch Fernseh GmbH (FESE), which was based in Darmstadt. At the time, the company was the leading provider of television technology such as cameras, studio technology and outside broadcast vans in Germany.

High requirementsThe customer’s requirement was to contact rela-tively large printed circuit boards which had to be inserted crosswise to the contacts rather than

Series 980 Zero insertion force contact bank

directly. To meet this requirement, we had to find a solution to first position the PCB and then con-tact the conductor paths.

Grant of patentThis is how the idea of the zero insertion force contact bank was born. We solved the problem by actuating the contacts via a plastic camshaft (with an injection-moulded gear wheel via a rack). At the same time, the rack served as a slide gate so that the printed circuit board could not be removed during contacting.

The 50-contact zero insertion force contact bank was used in TV cameras and large vision mixers (also called trick mixers).

Leuze electronic GmbH + Co. KG, based in Owen Teck, has been a specialist for innovative and practical optical sensor solutions in industrial automation for over 50 years. The 5+PE photo-electric sensor connector described below was developed for Leuze in 1979.

Customer-specific solutionIn the 1970s, Leuze photoelectric sensors had a cubic design and the then widely used square, 4-contact, solenoid valve connector, type A, matching our Series 210. However, by integrat-

ing further electrical functions it was necessary to increase the number of contacts from 4 to 6. 3 contacts were required for signals and 3 for the power supply (L, N, PE). PE is the abbreviation for the protective earth conductor. As the name suggests, its function is to protect against electric shock in the event of a fault. Since this connector was not available in the identical installation di-mensions of the solenoid valve connector, Leuze entrusted us with the task of developing an ap-propriate connector. A customer-specific 5+PE connector for pho-

toelectric sensors was developed in a cubic de-sign. To document this, the Leuze company logo was injected into the ‘female angled connector housing’. In addition to the usual standard re-quirements, VDE approval was required for the connector, which was specified for an operating voltage of 250 V. The VDE approval, document-ed by the VDE symbol, indicates conformity with VDE regulations and European or internationally harmonised standards.

The quantities were 8,000 units per year at prices of DM6.40 for the female angled connector and DM2.70 for the male panel mount connector with solder eye ring.

A detailed review of the year 2018, an outlook on the goals set for 2019 and specific ‘country presentations’ con-stituted the basis for constructive dis-

cussions. At the invitation of Werner Fröhlich, all those in charge at binder’s sales offices – binder China, binder USA, binder UK, binder France, binder Netherlands, binder Sweden, binder SEA and binder Austria – and binder Neckarsulm’s Product Management, Customer Service and Key Account staff plus Markus Binder met at the Nestor Hotel in Neckarsulm.

Maintaining valuesIn his presentation at the beginning, Markus Binder outlined the major ongoing projects, such as the new building, the further development of the corporate strategy, the introduction of a cus-tomer relationship management (CRM) system, and presented future target markets. However, in order to keep binder on the road to success, it is essential that ‘we do not lose sight of what distin-

guishes us,’ explained the General Manager. ‘As an owner-managed family business, we stand for such values as integrity, reliability, loyalty and a down-to-earth attitude,’ he stressed.

Pursuing projectsThe afternoon was dedicated to the sales offices, but first presentations by the headquarters sales team were on the agenda. Werner Fröhlich start-ed off by taking the podium and presenting de-tails on the current – excellent – business figures. Next year, Sales will focus even more specifically on future markets and the launch of innovative products. Daniel Wölfel (Customer Service) then described the implementation of the CRM system and a platform for international cooperation. This will enable binder in 2019 to optimally manage customers and customer data in order to simplify internal processes. Dieter Sandula (Product Man-agement) presented current highlights of the sen-sor area and the ‘explosive’ development of the industrial networks. Sascha Döbel (Product Man-

agement) presented new developments in the M9, M16 and LED range, among other things. Custom-er Service, headed by Goran Uremovic, shed light on international collaboration. Timo Pulkowski concluded this part by talking about what had been happening in Marketing in 2018. He stressed that binder clearly stands out from the competi-tion in the areas of product presentation, exhibi-tion booth, website and advertisements.

Joint trade fair visitFollowing the presentations, the first day was concluded at the Neckarsulmer Brauhaus. Ir-respective of products, projects and strategies, the informal discussions between the individual country representatives were decisive for the suc-cess of the meeting. The aftersales meeting 2018 was a valuable opportunity to exchange techni-cal information on the one hand and to maintain personal contact with each other on the other hand. On the following day, the participants were taken by bus to electronica in Munich, the world’s leading trade fair for electronics and at the same time the largest trade fair for the binder Group.M

>>>Review, outlook, updateIn the afternoon, the sales offices gave their ‘country pres-entations’, offering an update on the current status and pre-senting an outlook on what is planned for 2019. Detailed information was provided on the agenda items ‘Numbers’, ‘Projects’, ‘Opportunities’, ‘Improvements’ and ‘Wishes’.

As a medium-sized, innovative compa-ny, MC Technologies works with binder as a reliable partner who manufactures high-quality products which the team

sells with dedication and energy. The very large binder product range with its different variants is a challenge that is gladly accepted. This keeps the day-to-day business diversified.

PersonalThe many years of experience in the distribution of connectors from well-known manufacturers and the individual consultation we provide with technically experienced in-house specialists bring our customers many benefits. The focus here is on personal customer care and advice. A total of 45 employees work at the central office in Hanover. They are reinforced by a regional field sales team. The rapid growth of new technologies and applications derived from them requires con-tinuous theoretical and practical internal, exter-nal as well as customer training.

Tailor-madeAnother successful concept of MC Technolo-gies GmbH is its own cable assembly which has emerged from connector distribution and has been successful in the market for more than 25

years. Solution-oriented project developments from design-in to series production make it pos-sible again and again to implement tailor-made projects. These include, for example, the encap-sulated snap-in IP67 female panel mount connec-tor (4- to 8-way distributor) from the Series 720 for controlling various electronic components in in-dustrial awnings. Special challenges were posed to the dimensions, as the distributor is installed in an articulated arm. Additionally, a project with the M12 cable connector made of stainless steel and with 5 contacts – moulded onto a 10-metre hybrid cable with special environmental require-ments – could be realised. As a result, sales of more than 12,000 units per year were achieved.

ExpansionThe global market is increasingly focussing on the availability of raw and other materials. A large warehouse at the Hanover site ensures long-term deliverability and customer needs can be met at short notice. Deliveries are made irrespec-tive of packaging units or minimum order quan-tities, including customer-specific packaging and labelling. The service is rounded off by frame-work agreements for customer-specific stockpil-ing with call-offs as required. MC Technologies GmbH also offers mobile communication-based

IoT terminals and complete solutions. For MC Technologies, as a long-standing distributor of Gemalto mobile communication modules, mov-ing into this innovative world of the Internet of Things (IoT) was a logical step. A range of LTE routers, industrial modems and data terminals supports a variety of solutions. Thanks to in-house hardware development and software pro-gramming, MC Technologies offers maximum flexibility and speed in the implementation of projects and continuously develops its range of data technology. With the mobile communica-tion module manufacturer Quectel as a further distribution and development partner, the foun-dation stone was laid last year for narrow-band IoT (NB-IoT) projects.

CombinationThrough the combination of the business fields of connection technology and strong partners such as binder as well as the data technology sector, customers are supported with a high lev-el of consulting and solution competence. An important element here is the nationwide sales force in Germany. Advice on products requiring explanation and their sale as part of an optimal solution for the customer make all the difference.

SUCCESS STORY

In 1970, Franz Binder (founder), Werner Koch (authorised signatory at the time) and Jens Först (then managing director) met with August Märtens in Hanover. The occasion was the devel-opment of a competitive production of circular connectors in comparison to ‘Tuchel connec-tors’. August Märtens, factory representative of Sennheiser and a major ‘Tuchel customer’, was offered the opportunity to represent the compa-ny Franz Binder. No doubt with the ulterior mo-tive of also becoming a Sennheiser supplier. This did work out, too, forming the basis for the suc-cess story of the cooperation between binder and Märtens or MC Technologies. The great commit-ment of the binder management team, the per-manent expansion of the product range and the loyalty of all employees and sales partners led to ever new achievements. The success of binder’s products resulted in a targeted solution-oriented expansion of the connector range at MC Technol-ogies. Today, MC Technologies is a sought-after supplier to industry for technically demanding jobs. The employees and Rolf Märtens as Gener-al Manager are proud to have contributed to the 70-year success story of MC Technologies, also in memory of August Märtens.

Injection moulding production goes global –

part of binder’s risk management

TEXT Arno Merz

It was a new idea: the aim was to guarantee the pro-duction of identical injec-tion parts at different sites

with final assembly – world-wide. Initially, two injection parts from Series 763 were chosen for the pilot project at binder USA. At the same time, the experience gained from the project is to be used for anoth-er project: international binder relocations are to be ‘stand-ardised’ as far as possible. This strategy also represents a building block in global risk management.

On-site presenceAfter the compilation of im-portant figures, data and facts, Markus Binder gave Joachim Frank, Eric Shiver (binder USA), Klaus Rech-kemmer and Arno Merz the go-ahead for the project in May 2017. The first impor-tant step Joachim Frank and Arno Merz took in Octo-

ber 2017 was to visit binder USA in Camarillo, where for several years cables have been moulded with injec-tion moulding machines in semi-automatic production. The innovation is the instal-lation of a fully automatic injection moulding produc-tion with free-falling parts. These are required for cable assembly and were previ-ously imported from Neck-arsulm to the USA. After a general presentation of the project, work on its detailed planning and organisation was begun immediately. In the further course of the pro-ject, a to-do list was drawn up jointly. The result of the visit was presented to the management and judged as positive. A project team was quickly found: Patrick Obenland, Christopher Bur-khardt, Ulrich Maetz, Claus Burmeister and Karl Borbely were appointed to the core

team at the kick-off meeting in January 2018.

Training plan in placeAfter a project plan was drawn up, everything went hand in hand. The required injection moulding ma-chine was ordered in Ger-many and the construction of the injection moulding tool was initiated by a local tool manufacturer. Other project-relevant issues (SAP, quality, peripherals, pro-cesses, etc.) were also dealt with professionally and sys-tematically by the team.To improve language skills, an in-house English course was approved. This enabled the project team to build a training plan for Eric Shiver and John Magelssen, their colleagues from the USA. The aim was to teach and familiarise them with our processes and prepare them for their future tasks.

Page 25Production and logistics

>>>Successful startBy August 2018, preparations in the USA were largely completed. On 17 September, Patrick Obenland, Chris-topher Burkhardt, Israel Ereme (trainee W1) and Arno Merz flew to the USA for a week to launch production on-site and train the employees in ‘fully automatic injection moulding and quality’. The visit to Camarillo was a com-plete success. Thanks to the professional cooperation of the entire project team (USA and Germany), both new parts manufactured in the USA could be transferred to Neckarsulm for testing. The project went well all around. Consequently, two more injection parts are already in the pipeline for the production site in the USA. A big thank you to a great project team – worldwide.

Due to current and future challenges as well as changes within the binder Group in structural, organisational and personnel areas, it was decided to

create an event that promotes the cross-company networking of employees in the technical area. A total of 62 colleagues from Macrocast GmbH, binder precision parts ag, binder cable assem-blies Bt., binder electronic manufacturing ser-vices GmbH & Co. KG, MPE-Garry GmbH, Binder Austria GmbH, binder introbest GmbH & Co. KG, the binder Innovation & Technology Centre and Franz Binder GmbH & Co. Elektrische Bauele-mente KG were invited.

Learning from each other Against this background, the first Technology Days 2018 were planned at binder. The event focused on two key aspects: on the one hand, the networking of the Group at employee level and, on the other, the exchange of technological ideas, opportuni-

ties and trends. The Technology Days were based on interesting presentations on technical solu-tions and innovations, discussions on practical issues and insights into the work and production processes of the individual divisions. More than 20 colleagues from a wide variety of fields gave lectures, providing inspiration and know-how to manufacturing and production employees, designers, engineers, project managers, quality managers and many other colleagues. The main topics included everything to do with injection moulding and stamping tools, manufacturing, production, additive manufac-

turing and printed electronics, among other issues.

‘Together, jointly and in concert’During the breaks as well as at the joint dinner, all of the colleagues had the opportuni-ty to exchange impressions of

and opinions on the lectures and other topics. This led to new

connections between employees,

including with respect to technology. In this way each division, each colleague and each subsid-iary was and is able to demonstrate their core competencies and technical possibilities within the Group.

SummaryThrough the Technology Days, we as the binder Group have created a basis for better internal networking. In the future, the Technology Days could be an opportunity to transport external know-how about technical possibilities, solu-tions and inspirations across different disciplines and the entire Group. Only through the constant and continuous exchange of information on tech-nical possibilities, trends and potentials within the Group and across all functional levels can we continue to grow (together) in the future.

ing errors, and measurement technologies. The focuses of the event were establishing good rela-tionships, getting to know the respective contact partners and the networking of the individual Group companies with respect to quality.

Creating uniform processesThe way in which the individual companies will cooperate in the future was identified and wel-comed as one of the central steps of a globally active binder Group. The creation of uniform pro-cesses and procedures that are valid throughout the Group was seen as one of the keys to success-ful cooperation. The technical and personnel re-quirements for ensuring the consistency of sys-tems and methods will undoubtedly be one of our challenges in the near future.

Informative characterThe increasing complexity of products and pro-cesses additionally calls for overarching func-tional cooperation between Quality, Logistics, Purchasing, Development and Production. The respective processes cover the entire product life cycle and require cross-departmental cooperation between the various parties involved. Overall, the participants found the quality meeting very pos-itive and informative. The meeting is conceived as the starting point for Group-wide cooperation in the area of quality, and in the future will take place at regular intervals. In closing, we wish to thank our colleagues from Hungary for hosting the meeting, providing the facilities and offering their outstanding support.

Third binder Group trainee and student event

Escaping from rooms, walking on shards, learning more about the company while searching for QR codes – there was something for everyone at this year’s

binder Group event for trainees and students.

TEXT Lena Lautenbach

Page 35Organisation

This year, the participants gathered again at binder in Neckarsulm – the last time was in 2016 – for the third trainee and student event. On 27 September 2018, the

participants from the affiliated companies binder precision parts, binder cable assemblies, binder introbest and MPE-Garry arrived in Neckarsulm and made an evening visit to binder for ‘Nacht der Ausbildung’ (‘Vocational training night’). Here, the trainees and training instructors from the affiliated companies had the opportunity to learn about the binder occupational training con-cept in detail. They conversed over pizza and soft drinks and, while touring the individual ‘voca-tional-training islands’, gained insights into the everyday work life of trainees at binder.

WelcomeThe next day began with a greeting from Siegbert Vollert, who welcomed the binder Group trainees

and students with pride: ‘You are the future, the foundation we are building on. Thank you all for coming.’ Klaus Egler, team lead of Goods Receiving, then conveyed to the participants valuable infor-mation about binder and its products, which the visiting trainees and students were able to view in practice in the factory tour that followed. Rozália Felföldi, a technical assistant from binder cable assemblies in Hungary, translated Klaus Egler’s presentation for the Hungarian participants.

Team buildingFollowing lunch together, the programme called for team-building activities at the Science and Technology Centre in the industrial Future Park Wohlgelegen in Heilbronn. The participants were divided into groups and had to ‘prove them-selves’ in escape rooms, at geocaching and in tests of courage. The players were P

‘locked’ into the escape rooms and were only able to get out by solving various riddles and chal-lenges that demanded patience, ingenuity and teamwork. Geocaching likewise required interaction among the instructors and trainees in order to achieve the team’s common goal. The joint search for QR codes also posed a test of the participants’ knowledge of binder – and, for some, a chance to expand it. A join-in show led by Mr Yasin (entertainer, coach and hypnotherapist) brought an easy-go-ing atmosphere to the happenings, as the partic-ipants had to enter into direct contact with one another. It included something for everyone, from boxing with quickly changing partners to walking on shards to relaxation therapy.

NeckarbummlerIn the evening, the participants all gathered in Heilbronn for a river excursion. While cruising aboard the Neckarbummler, the trainees and instructors enjoyed delicious

food in an exuberant atmosphere, and had time to talk and get to know each other better. The highlight of the evening: the new binder Group trainees and students got things started by singing a song together. The young men per-formed Queen’s ‘We will rock you’ and the young women ‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams. In addition, awards were presented to the winners of the day’s team-building activities. P

the general expansion of capacity and its adaptation to the needs of binder Neck-arsulm. A large part of the remaining

free space is reserved for two new rotary-cycle machines. One is to be delivered in February 2019 and will support the production of Series 713. The second machine, which is to produce a variety of contact sockets in large quantities, is still in the project phase and, pending approval, is expected

to be delivered at the start of 2020.

New floor The move into Plant 2 made it possible to com-pletely clear out Hall 1 in Leuzigenstraße, which from 1979 was used mainly for the fabrication of binder contacts. This presented the opportuni-ty to refurbish the nearly 40-year-old floor. The old synthetic resin surface was replaced with new FAMA xyolite flooring which now shines in

a friendly, warm yellow tone. After around three weeks, the new floor covering was laid and the hall again made ready for operation. The long-held wish to place the multi-spin-dle automatic lathes from each respective man-ufacturer in their own row was finally realised. This new layout not only catches the eye but, with regard to the work, is clearer, more efficient and, for the machine fitters, more convenient. Thanks to good cooperation with our partners, the four existing machines were moved quickly into the freshly refurbished Hall 1. In total, six multi-spindle automatic lathes will be set up in Hall 1. The last one is to be delivered in April 2019 and will create added capacity for the production of various sleeves and threaded rings.

Challenge In summary, since April 2018, 43 machines have been relocated to Plant 2 and 47 machines repo-sitioned. Producing at two locations poses an added challenge. Information and material flows

and personnel planning all require increased ef-fort, which must not be neglected. This situation is eased, however, by the multiple transport runs organised each day and the constant information exchange between the two plants.

The former intrObest GmbH & Co. KG has been renamed binder introbest GmbH & Co. KG. ‘Our company is now part of the binder Group,’ says the plant manager, Thomas Lacker. ‘Our new name makes that clear at first glance.’ Ac-

cordingly, binder introbest is adopting the corporate design guide-lines of its parent company and is receiving a new logo.

Essential step For binder Group General Manager Markus Binder, this step was imperative, as ‘we want to have all of the Group companies “under one roof” in order to underscore our international orientation and our status as a medium-sized family company.’

Site to be maintained All jobs at binder introbest are being retained and the existing lo-cation is continuing operations at full scale. In addition, all general terms and conditions of business as well as of sale and delivery remain unchanged. The existing company address is also being maintained.

Marketing binder in the UKBefore binder UK was established in 2009, the name Binder was known only to a select group of customers. The wider market was largely igno-rant as to the products offered and new nothing about the company and its values. Therefore the first objective was to increase market awareness by promoting the products and more importantly

marketing the brand. Informing the market not only of the products, their features and benefits but also that binder was a family owned business with a social conscience and traditional values. This activity has included exhibitions, print and digital advertising and public relations (PR) in the form of press releases and articles. Over the years there has been a focus on specific prod-ucts, such as a highly successful campaign for the Snap-In IP67 series 620/720 including be-spoke advertising, PR, landing page, distributor

incentive and 1000s of specially packed samples sent to engineers. The focus has not just been on key mar-kets such as automation and sensor but also new markets such as security, medical, with particu-lar success achieved in lighting and motorsport. Attention has always been given to what makes binder different to the old ways of the competitors and this is evident in the marketing communica-tions. More recently this has been aligned to the binder group marketing strategy and has benefit-ted from the unified corporate image and style.

Result and futureAs a result of the extensive marketing activities binder is now one of the more recognised con-nector brands in the UK industrial market and is often approached by leading distributors, es-tablishing relationships with the best and those most aligned to it’s own strategy. Regular con-tributions are made to industry magazines with comments and features. Since 2009, sales have increased three-fold so it must be the right path although there is still long way to go. For 2019 the local marketing activity will complement the group marketing strategy. A number of markets will be targeted both hori-zontal such as electronics design and vertical such as rail, machine building and lighting. All the time promoting the products and marketing what make binder different: the brand, brand and brand!

You can’t look at the competition and say you’re going to do it

The sales territory of binder South East Asia, based in Singa-pore, reaches far be-

yond the 719 km2 area of the island nation itself. In addition to adjacent Malaysia, with its economic focal points Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bah-ru, the area of activity takes in the regional neighbours Thai-land, Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The sales region further encompasses Indonesia and the Philippines, as well as Taiwan, South Korea and Ja-pan in North East Asia, and the former Crown Colony of Hong Kong, which due to its special status as a member of the Asso-ciation of Southeast Asian Na-tions (ASEAN) also falls within binder South East Asia’s territo-ry. Australia and New Zealand round out binder’s Asia-Pacific sales region. In the Middle East, the distribution area includes the lower-turnover countries Saudi Arabia, Iran and the

United Arab Emirates. These areas are additionally bordered by Pakistan and India, the lat-ter of which has shown strong sales development in the last several years.

Product trainings The great expansion of the dis-tribution region makes it im-possible to supervise all coun-tries directly. For this reason, in addition to selling directly to customers, binder South East Asia also works in cooperation with a continually growing network of distributors who provide binder with support in sales and trade fair activities, among other areas. The coop-eration with these distributors includes regular product train-ings, which take place at the of-fices of binder South East Asia in Singapore. With its relatively central location, Singapore is especially well-placed to host these trainings, as participants from other countries can trav-

el there without difficulty. The most recent trainings included participants from India, Malay-sia, Singapore, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Ongoing development Due to the steady development of market activities, further trainings are planned for the future. binder’s participation in the Industrial Transformation fair in Singapore next October is sure to bring additional con-tacts and distribution partners.

At the beginning of September, the Lord Mayor of Neckarsulm, Steffen Hertwig, handed over the construction permit for the com-pany’s new building to Markus Binder. ‘Rötelstraße is being given a new face, which will upgrade the appearance of the area,’ says the mayor enthusiastically.

Meanwhile, preparatory work for the building’s pile foundation has begun.
