ASTER Night-time Thermal Image Covering Fukushima

11

This ASTER night time thermal image covering Fukushima shows the Daiichi nuclear plant as observed by ASTER. The amount of heat radiation as measured by Band 13 (10.67 um) has been converted into brightness temperatures using the Planck rule.In measurements from the Self Defense Forces helicopter, a hot spot of about 100 is partially observed. Such high ℃temperature areas cannot be identified by this image. One of the reasons could be due to the spatial resolution of the ASTER thermal band (ground resolution 90m) and due to the pixels including the hot spot averaged with the surrounding area. Another reason might be the influence of the small portion of clouds.

Change (damage area) Extraction by PALSAR Images

12

Distribution of the discriminant score is calculated from the difference in the backscattering and correlation coefficient of pre- and post-tsunami PALSAR fine beam mode images (2009/11/12 and 2011/3/16), in areas where the elevation (ASTER GDEM) is lower than 50 m above sea level. Pixels whose discriminant score is positive (warmer colors) might be assigned as areas by temporal (seasonal) surface changes and/or damage due to the tsunami of the 2011 Tohoku-Taiheiyo-oki, Japan earthquake.

Crustal Deformation Extraction by PALSAR

Interferogram images are generated by PALSAR data. These images are acquired in ascending orbit. Where the line of sight is far, this means the ground moves eastward (or is prone to subsidence) and hence far from the satellite. When it is near, however, this means the ground moves westward (or rises) because it moves closer to the satellite. All the PALSAR observation modes are FBS and their offnadir angles are 34.3 degrees. The satellite flight direction is 350.0 degrees and the radar illumination direction is 80.0 degrees.
