GEO POLYMERIC CONCRETE
(A substitute to cement in cement concrete mix)
ABSTRACT:
The basic and most important constructional material for
infrastructural development is ordinary Portland cement-OPC. Ordinary
Portland cement (OPC) is conventionally used as the Primary binder to
produce concrete. The environmental issues associated with the OPC are well
known The amount of the carbon dioxide released during the manufacture
of OPC due to the calcinations of the limestone and combustion of fossil fuel
is in the order of one ton for every ton of OPC produced. In addition theextent of energy required to produce OPC is only next to steel and
aluminium.
India is third lar!est cement producin! country in the world ne"t
only to china and #apan. $espite OPC bein! hi!hly valuable and wonderful
buildin! material it suffers from variety of maladies. The maladies include
depletion of natural resources like lime stone in production of OPC, large
amounts of energy consumption in manufacture results in global warming
and climate change cause panic in the whole world spiralin! cost of OPC in
developin! countries like India .%esearch has been in pro!ress all over the
world accruin! several benefits replacement of OPC with
CC!"Complimentary Cementing materials# like $ice husk ash, silica fume,
fly ashand others has ne!ated the ill effects of OPC to a lar!e e"tent. &urther
the availability of fly ash worldwide creates opportunity to utili'e this by-
product of burnin! coal as a substitute for OPC to manufacture concrete.
hen fly ash used as a replacement of OPC in the presence
of water and in ambient temperature (*- +* de!ree Celsius) fly ash reacts
with the calcium hydro"ide durin! the hydration process of OPC to form
calcium silicate hydrate "C%!% gel. The development and application of hi!h
volume fly ash concrete which enabled the replacement of OPC up to *, by
mass is a si!nificant $evelopment.

'ly ash increases concrete strength, improves sulphate resistance, decreases
permeability, reduces the water ratio required, and improves the workability
of the concrete.
In +/ $avidovits proposed that binders could be prepared
by a polymeric reaction of alkaline liquids with the silicon and thealuminium in sources materials of geological origin or by%products materials
such as fly ash and these binders are known as geo%polymers. The main
binder produced is a C-0-1 !el as the result of the hydration process.
