Sum-mary-

The creation and expansion of the European Union are generallyunderstood as economic and political processes. Geopolitical aspectsare marginalized regarding their signicant role. In theoretical sensethe development of the European Union is based on the Heartland-Ri-mland concept of the Cold War, and in practical geostrategic sense it re-

presents, along with NATO, American transatlantic defense in the westof Eurasia. Preparation, formation and expansion of the integration arethe main proofs that geopolitical causes and consequences still existseven in post-bipolar era. The European Union and NATO are two com-plementary organizations with consistent territorial expansion. Nevert-heless, in the rst decade of the 21st century geopolitical interests ofRussia and Europe have been reactivated. Those interests are based ontheoretical aspects of Neo-Eurasian and they will be gradually imple-mented by the geopolitical use of networks of Gus Line and Pipe Linethat will supply energy-depended Europe. Balkan, Serbia and Serbiancountries must nd their place in the context of current and future US-
