Admin and Finance This third quarter we sadly said goodbye to Poe Pyit Soe who has been working as Mote Oo’s Border Administrator for four years. He is continuing his studies at Chaing Mai University, Thailand and we wish him all the best. We welcome Lin Kyaw Myo as replacement Border Administrator, and also Nyi Nyi Ko to the Yangon office as a Logistic Assistant.
This quarter’s highlight was the two day event during which Dr. Rosalie Metro, author of Mote Oo‘s Histories of Burma, recorded a demonstration history lesson to students from Total school in Yangon. She was then invited back the next day to talk at the school about her experience writing the Histories of Burma books.
The Admin, Finance and Publications Departments held a five day workshop in Mae Sot with Fiona Thompson to edit the demonstration lesson, and generally learn about video editing techniques. The video will be available in the next few months, when our new website is up. Generally, the team has been busy as usual but we healthy and happy with our work and looking forward to drier weather next quarter.

The Publications Department has had a busy quarter. We said goodbye to
our Myanmar Publications Manager May Htut Pan Moe (Pann Nee) in July.
In her place, we welcome Nila Win, who has taken over the job of managing
all Myanmar language publications. Additionally, we began a multimedia
project to add a video component to our Histories of Burma textbook. It will
be released online by the end of the year. In July, we printed the English
version of our life skills-related resource, Young Adult Success, which is a
book for teachers, parents and caregivers of young people. The Myanmar
language version is coming soon. Finally, only six months after it was
published we reprinted Learning Skills, which has been very, very popular,
and is being used in a number of schools and colleges around the country.
It's a great resource and we're very proud of it.
Publications Department

Teacher 1: Needs and Learning. We are also working on a Social
Cohesion Toolkit (see Special Projects).

University of Global Peace
The University of Global Peace was founded this year by Sayadaw
U Zawtika at the foot of Yankin Hill outside of Mandalay. The first
batch of about 70 students, both monks and laypeople, Buddhists and a
few Hindus (adherents of all religions are encouraged to join the
University), started in August with a six months long preparation period,
which focuses on English and basic research skills. In 2019 these students
will be the first ones to enroll in M.A. and PhD programs at the University.
In the programs, potential for peace in the major world religions will be
explored with the aim to lessen divides among religious lines and to
contribute to peaceful coexistence of people of different faiths.
Mote Oo's Civic and Peace Education team successfully conducted their
first peace training with a group of students and lecturers. The students
are eager to learn more about peace building and to develop their
University into a place where people of different religions and ethnicities
learn about peace together in an inclusive environment. We want to
support this vision by giving regular peace trainings in the future.

Shwe Htay Khant - Assistant Manager, Teacher Training Department
Arr lone paemingalar par shint. I am
Shwe Htay Khant. I had been teaching
young and adult learners English in
language schools for 4 years when I
started working as a teacher trainer with
Mote Oo Education in April, 2014. I am
happy to work at Mote Oo because it
provides me with new things to learn
and yes I love to explore and learn new
things. I am responsible for training
teachers around Myanmar and alongside
Thai-Myanmar border. I am also
responsible for logistics and administration of the training department,
budgeting, and networking. I have always found teaching to be interesting and
exciting in the 8 years I have taught as a profession. Observing characters of
learners in every minute and seconds during teaching is really amazing. The
more I understand them, the easier to approach them to support their
learning. That makes my teaching easier and helps the learners to learn
effectively. I am really proud of MO’s services around Myanmar as MO is
meeting the needs of non-formal education in Myanmar and strengthening its
capacity which few people focus on. I am now working as the Assistant
Manager of the Training Department in Mote Oo Education. I am excited by
our vision “all peoples of Myanmar can access quality inclusive education” for
the future.

Gray - Education Designer
Hey y’all! I started working with Mote Oo
Education last year, although I have been very familiar with the organization’s great
work since its founding in 2013. It’s been really great to be able to “peek behind the
curtain” and become a part of the processes
that allow Mote Oo to produce such enriching resources and deliver meaningful
training and workshop services!
At Mote Oo, my position as an Education
Designer is really unique. I am able to work across departments and contribute to many
different projects, including creating new teaching and learning resources, designing
and delivering relevant training and workshops, and pursuing rewarding
research, consultancies, and new projects. My work has allowed me to travel across Myanmar, and in doing so I have met with many great schools,
programs, and organizations as well as countless inspiring educators and civil
society leaders. I am also very fortunate to be able to work alongside some very talented and dedicated colleagues who are more than happy to co-create
wonderful new ideas with me!
This year has so far been a very rewarding one at Mote Oo, and I have been able to leverage my passion and expertise to empower others around the
country to improve the quality and conditions of education in their
communities. I have learned a lot from those I work – both inside Mote Oo and at our many partners – and I consider myself blessed to be able to interact
with so many inspirational people on a daily basis!

It's rare that younger students ever lose interest in general. There is always
something they are curious about; maybe just not the particular lesson you
are trying to teach. Adolescents or young adults, less so.
If they are just generally not interested in the subject, consideration about
the curriculum will have to be made. Why is this subject taught? How can
they benefit from this? What are they consequences of not knowing this?
How does this fit in the general curriculum? If there are no strong answers
to these questions, then the subject could be changed or cancelled. If there
are strong answers, students should be informed of these answers.
There should also be personalisation - make the lesson relevant and relata-
ble to students' lives. Competitions and group projects also can increase
the students' morale. There are useful and versatile activities in "Activities
for Social Science Teaching", a teacher support book available online for
free at www.moteoo.org.
