    An Introdution

    Hercules, the Latin equivalent of Heracles,

    was the son ofZeus andAlcmene.

    Hera tried to murder the infant Hercules byputting serpents in his cradle. Luckily for

    Hercules, he was born with great strength

    and killed the serpents.

    An Introdution

    The goddess Hera, determined to make troublefor Hercules, made him lose his mind. In aconfused and angry state, he killed his own wifeand children.

    When he awakened from his "temporaryinsanity," Hercules was shocked and upset bywhat he'd done. He prayed to the god Apollo forguidance, and the god's oracle told him he would

    have to serve Eurystheus, the king of Tiryns andMycenae, for twelve years, in punishment for themurders.

    The Nemean Lion

    Arrows are useless

    against the lion.

    Grasping the lion inhis mighty arms, and

    ignoring its powerful

    claws, he held it tightly

    until he'd choked it todeath.

    The Lernean Hydra

    A monstrous serpent with

    nine heads, the hydra

    attacked with poisonous

    venom. Each time Hercules

    bashed one of the hydra's

    heads, Iolaus held a torch

    to the headless tendons of

    the neck. The flames

    prevented the growth of

    replacement heads .

    The Hind of Ceryneia

    Diana's Pet Deer

    This was a specialdeer, because it hadgolden horns and

    hoofs of bronze. she was Diana's

    special pet.

    That meant that

    Hercules could neitherkill the deer nor hurther .

    The Erymanthian Boar

    Every day the boar wouldcome crashing downfrom his lair on themountain, attacking men

    and animals all over thecountryside.

    On his way to hunt theboar, Hercules stoppedto visit his friend Pholus,

    who was a centaur andlived in a cave near MountErymanthus.

    The Augean Stables

    Hercules Cleans Up

    Hercules went to KingAugeas,and without telling anythingabout Eurystheus, said that hewould clean out the stables in

    one day, ifAugeas would givehim a tenth of his fine cattle.

    WhenAugeas learned thatEurystheus was behind all this,he would not pay Hercules hisreward. Not only that, he

    denied that he had evenpromised to pay a reward.

    The Stymphalian Birds

    The goddessAthena

    came to his aid,

    providing a big shield.

    Hercules clashed the

    shield loudly, scaring

    the birds out of the

    trees, then shot them

    with bow and arrow,

    as they took flight .

    The Cretan Bull

    Minos himself, in order toprove his claim to the throne,had promised the sea-godPoseidon that he would

    sacrifice whatever the godsent him from the sea.Poseidon sent a bull, butMinos thought it was toobeautiful to kill, and so hesacrificed another bull.

    When Hercules got to Crete,he easily wrestled the bull tothe ground and drove it backto King Eurystheus.

    The Man-Eating Horses ofDiomedes

    Bistones sent a band ofsoldiers to Recapture theanimals.

    To free himself to fight,Hercules entrusted themares to a youth namedAbderos.

    Unfortunately, the mares

    got the better of youngAbderos and dragged himaround until he was killed.

    Hippolyte's BeltHercules Fights the Amazons

    Queen Hippolyte had a specialpiece of armor. It was aleather belt that had beengiven to her byAres

    She asked Hercules why he

    had come, and when he toldher, she promised to give himthe belt.

    But the goddess Hera went upand down the army saying toeach woman that the

    strangers who had arrivedwere going to carry off thequeen.

    The Cattle of Geryon

    Geryon lived on an islandcalled Erythia, which was nearthe boundary of Europe andLibya. On this island, Geryon

    kept a herd of red cattleguarded by Cerberus's brother,Orthus, a two-headed hound,and the herdsman Eurytion.

    Sailing in a goblet which theSun gave him in admiration,

    Hercules reached the island ofErythia.

    The Apples of the HesperidesI

    These apples were kept ina garden at the northernedge of the world, andthey were guarded not

    only by a hundred-headeddragon, named Ladon, butalso by the Hesperides,nymphs who weredaughters of Atlas, the

    titan who held the sky andthe earth upon hisshoulders.

    Hercules' first problem was that hedidn't know where the garden was.

    Hercules came to the rock on Mount

    Caucasus where Prometheus waschained,and killed the eagle.

    Atlas hated holding up the sky andthe earth so much that he wouldagree to the task of fetching the

    apples, in order to pass his burdenover to Hercules.

    Cerberus

    Cerberus was a vicious beastthat guarded the entrance toHades and kept the living fromentering the world of the dead.

    Hercules threw his strongarms around the beast,perhaps grasping all threeheads at once, and wrestledCerberus into submission. Thedragon in the tail of the fierce

    flesh-eating guard dog bitHercules, but that did not stophim. Cerberus had to submit tothe force of the hero,

    One was to rescuethe princess of Troyfrom a hungry sea-

    monster.

    Another was to helpZeus defeat the

    Giants in a greatbattle for the controlof Olympus.

    After the Labors

    Hercules went to the town of Thebes and married

    Deianira. She bore him many children. Later on in

    their life, the male centaur, Nessus, abducted

    Deianira, but Hercules came to her rescue byshooting Nessus with a poison tipped arrow. The

    dying Nessus told Deianira to keep a portion of

    his blood to use as a love potion on Hercules if

    she felt that she was losing him to another woman.

    Hercules End

    A couple of a months later,Deianira thought that anotherwoman was coming between herand her husband, so Deianirawashed one of Hercules' shirts inNessus' blood and gave it to himto wear. Nessus had lied to her,for the blood really acted as apoison and almost killed Hercules.On his funeral pyre, the dyingHercules ascended to Olympus,where he was granted immortalityand lived among the gods.
