CELEBRATING their 40thanniversary this year are theDawnswyr Werin GlancleddauFolk Dancers, who havebrought honour and prestigeto Haverfordwest andPembrokeshire since they
were formed to represent thetown and county at the 1972Royal National Eisteddfod at
Withybush.Founded by the late Miss Cicely
Howells, headmistress of theSecondary Modern School (nowSirThomas Picton) and Mrs MaryHay, both of whom had run folkdancing classes for some years, thedancers and musicians won theadult folk dancing competition attheir first attempt and went on toachieve successive victories at
Carmarthen, in 1974, and Cardigan,in 1976.They have good cause to be
proud of their record as they marktheir Ruby Anniversary with a
month-long exhibition at theCounty Library this month and a
celebratory service at St DavidsChurch, Prendergast in May.
In 1973 they carried the flag tothe International Eisteddfod atLlangollen, acquitting themselves

well against 28 folk danceteams from all over the world.
Their early performances setnew standards in Welsh folkdancing and since then theyhave won National Eisteddfodhonours at Mn in 1999, StDavids in 2002 and Mold in2007 - while the accomplishedGlancleddau musicians, led bySian Lewis, have also won theband prize on severaloccasions.The team havenever failed to be staged withthe top three and have beenrunners-up more times thanthey have come third.
They have performed alloverWales and also inEngland, Ireland, Germany,Britanny and Norway.
Highlights of their longcareer were an appearance atthe International Folk Festival
in Bristol in 1977 and atelevised performance in the
St Davids Day NationalFestival in a packed Royal
Albert Hall in 1978 followedby a dance display in thecompany of BBC broadcasterAlunWilliams and rugby starCliff Morgan at the RoyalWelsh Club.
Glancleddau takes pride inthe fact that they sowed thefirst seed towardsHaverfordwests l ong-standingtwinning arrangement withOberkirch in Germany, whenthey returned from a danceexchange bearing a letter fromthe Burgomeister to theHaverfordwest Mayor.
They have also forged strongfolk dance exchangefriendships in Lffingen in theBlack Forest.At the invitationof Haverfordwest TownCouncil Glancleddau have
