GLEN MASSEY SCHOOL
Thursday August 22nd 2019 Dear Parents/Caregivers Mihi atu ki ā tātou kātoa. Greetings to you all. What’s Hot? The school band - Mass Affect, doing us proud at Bandslam and Bandquest New goals on the back field - Thanks Keri Magee! Great participation in the Fun Run and X Country All Blacks 36 - Australia 0 (we won’t mention the week before) Spring not far away School Waimaths Teams doing very well against the Hamilton schools. Principals accept new deal from Government What’s Not? Relief Teacher Shortage in Schools - let us know if you know anyone who can relieve. Measles in Auckland Schools - hopefully not coming this way! Unpaid accounts - please help us with these! SCHOOL BAND Our school band ‘Mass Affect’ performed admirably last week over 2 nights. It was really cool seeing a little country school mixing it on stage and holding their own against schools like Berkley, Southwell etc who have full time music tutors and music rooms. Our guys and girls were definitely not out of place at all. Well done to you all and a huge thanks to Lindy for all her help with the band this year. The videos are on the school facebook if you want to see them. RELIEF TEACHER SHORTAGE Schools across the country are facing a relief teacher shortage. Do you know any teachers who might be available for ‘relieving’ work at Glen Massey School? We are under pressure to find relief teachers to cover for our teach-ing staff when they are sick or they are involved in training programmes. We need registered teachers who are available for work. We are asking our com-munity to actively help us by approaching friends, family or work colleagues, who may know of teachers who might be interested in joining our Relief Teacher database. PET DAY A reminder that Pet Day is early next term. There are bags of milk powder here at school for $20 which is a great deal, thanks to our PTA who arranged these. If you are thinking of having a lamb but don’t know where to start, con-tact us here at school and we can point you in the right direction! Well done to all those who have taken this opportunity up already!

GOOD ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOUR Attitude and behaviour must come before good learning can take place. We need our students to take responsi-bility for their own actions in all settings, even when we (parents / carers and teachers) are not watching. If your son / daughter is a ‘good person’ they will know their boundaries and they will learn to make you / us proud. Some children might prove to be difficult at home, but they must learn to take full advantage of the many oppor-tunities available to them when out & about. Learning to be a good citizen in the school setting and in their wider community (and in their family too) is our schools aim for your child. Many more doors will open for them if they are a good citizen, and therefore they will enjoy a wider selection of choice in their lives. I am sure you agree that we all want our children to have lots and lots of choices in their future, so let’s work together to help them ‘work at’ the important things … which are “good” attitudes and “good” behaviours. Growing great people is written into our charter! SUPPORTING NGARUAWAHIA HIGH SCHOOL Thanks to everyone who ordered last week. It seemed to go very well and I know that Nicole from the High School was pleased. SATURDAY SPORTS Winter sports is drawing to a close. I have really enjoyed getting around and seeing all the different sports. It is enjoyable to watch and gets me off my chuff on a Saturday morning. We have some very talented sports people in our school. I am hopefully off to rugby and hockey over the next few weekends. SCHOOL-HOME PARTNERSHIP Our school is proud of our ability to work together with our parent community, and we are also grateful to those of you who contribute positively to your child’s school too. It does help your child(ren) when they know you are active in their school eg. coaching / managing a team, PTA, class trips, camps, BOT etc. You are a positive role model. What you say (and do) about your child’s school can impact on their performance, so please look to build school spirit and school pride at home because it will build a child’s morale’. Their attitude / effort improves if they feel you value their school, value their teachers and value education. Their personal performance and pro-gress improves. As parents we want our children to “look up to us” and “respect us”, and we want them to then do the same at school too. Please keep a positive ‘school’ focus going and give your child(ren) the tools to smile and be happy, so they arrive looking forward to each school day. We don’t always get it right, we are human. But we strive everyday to do the best for your child. Please come in and talk with us if you ever have any concerns. - A LEADERS VOICE -
Greetings to all, My name is Oakley Robcke I am a year 8 student and I have been at Glen Massey school for 7 years. I am also in the student council for the first time and I encourage people to try and get into the student council because there are a lot of good op-portunities and responsibility to try harder and achieve things. My interests are lis-tening to music, Cardi B, Ed Sheeran and Panic at the Disco. I also enjoy hanging out with my friends - Tralee, Amalie, Urban, Broden, Dylan and Carmen. Our school is a happy place with a good community and amazing opportunities for the people in Glen Massey. The people in our school are friendly people so you would be able to fit right in. Yours sincerely, Oakley Robcke

Dear Parents/Whanau/Caregivers
A common cause of sore throats is a bacteria called group A streptococcus, which should be treated with antibiotics. In New Zealand, a small number of children with this bacteria, if not treated with antibiot-ics, can go on to develop a serious disease called Rheumatic Fever. Māori and Pacific children aged 5-14 years are most at risk from this disease.
What is Rheumatic Fever? Rheumatic Fever starts with a bacterial streptococcal infection causing a sore throat. The sore throat may disappear, but a few weeks later the following symptoms may develop:
sore or swollen joints
jerky movements
a rash
fever
shortness of breath
Rheumatic Fever can cause permanent heart damage, which may mean stays in hospital, surgery, and sometimes a shorter life. Someone with Rheumatic Fever needs ten years of antibiotic injections to pro-tect their heart.
Fortunately, if a streptococcal sore throat is treated correctly with antibiotics your child should not get Rheumatic Fever.
What do I need to do if my child has a sore throat? If a child gets a sore throat, please make sure they are checked by a doctor or nurse. If they fall into a “high risk” group – Māori or Pacific people aged 3 – 45 years of age, they should have a throat swab taken. If they have a streptococcal bacterial infection they will need antibiotics to treat the infection. It is important that all of the ten days of antibiotics are taken exactly as prescribed so the streptococcal bac-teria are killed and Rheumatic Fever is prevented.
By taking all sore throats seriously, we can help prevent life-long illness and suffering for our children.
Sore throats matter – get them checked!!
