ABOUT THE FILM A church destroyed. A congregation silenced. A relationship shattered. Yet even in life’s darkest valleys, a small flame can light the way toward healing and hope. That’s the plot and the promise of GOD’S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN DARKNESS, from Pure Flix, the largest independent faith and family film studio in the world. When a deadly fire rips through St. James Church, devastating the congregation and Reverend Dave (David A.R. White), adjoining Hadleigh University uses the tragedy to try and kick the house of worship off campus. Battle lines are quickly drawn between the small church and the community, pitting Rev. Dave against his longtime friend Thomas Ellsworth (Ted McGinley), the university president, while further estranging college student Keaton (Samantha Boscarino), a member of St. James’ campus ministry, from the Christian faith she has come to question. Facing a court case and his own struggle to see Christ’s light in heartbreak, Rev. Dave asks for help from his estranged brother Pearce (John Corbett), a big-city lawyer turned atheist, to fight for his brother’s church to rebuild. The family reunion opens old wounds, as the brothers wrestle with the questions that pulled them apart years ago: Is God really good all the time? Where is God when bad things happen? Can Christ really heal the brokenhearted? Even while grappling with these personal issues, Rev. Dave must face another dilemma, turning to his former protégé Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper) for wisdom in answering the thorniest practical question before him: Can Christians fight for their rights and still be a loving example for Christ at the same time? These questions aren’t just at the core of the film – they’re at the forefront of society, notes actor David A.R. White. “In our culture right now there is a lot of fighting going on. Whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, left side, ride side, nobody seems to be able to get along and there’s a lot of dissention,” he says. “So we wanted to shine a light on this, but in a GOD’S NOT DEAD way: filled with hope and healing and forgiveness.” GOD’S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN DARKNESS stars David A.R. White (GOD’S NOT DEAD, REVELATION ROAD), John Corbett (MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, ALL SAINTS), Ted McGinley (DO YOU BELIEVE?, Married…with Children), Shane Harper (GOD’S NOT DEAD, Good Luck Charlie), Jennifer Taylor (Two and a Half Men), Benjamin Onyango (GOD’S NOT DEAD, GOD’S NOT DEAD 2), Gregory Alan Williams (REMEMBER THE TITANS, Greenleaf), with special appearances by gospel legend Dr. Cissy Houston (mother of the late chart-topping superstar Whitney Houston) and Academy Award® winner Tatum O’Neal (PAPER MOON, THE BAD NEWS BEARS). The film is written and directed by Michael Mason, and produced by Michael Scott, David A.R. White, Elizabeth Travis, Alysoun Wolfe, and Bittany Yost.

STARTING A DIALOGUE, NOT DELIVERING A MONOLOGUE

It’s rough out there these days in the marketplace of ideas. Many of the voices are less interested in adding insight to the conversation than in winning an argument. We’re talking less about why we think we’re right, and yelling more about why we think the other guy is wrong. And while discussing religion has, since biblical times, generated controversy in some quarters, the disagreements are sharper and more divisive today. Much has changed about how we discuss and practice Christianity in the public square since the surprise success of GOD’S NOT DEAD in 2014 – and the creative team behind the latest installment wanted to address the issue head-on in GOD’S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN DARKNESS. “In our society and culture right now, we have a lot of darkness,” explains David A.R. White, who returns to the role of Rev. Dave and again serves as a producer. “There’s a lot of anger; there’s a lot of fighting. You can’t turn on the news for even a second without seeing something that’s really disturbing. This is a time in our society when it seems like we have so much tension going on – we have the left, we have the right and nobody can agree on anything. This movie really brings that out. It’s a movie about hope, about love, about healing and ultimately, forgiveness.” The film accomplishes its lofty aspirations through the lens of Rev. Dave, who takes on the central role in this film after being a supporting player in the two previous films. When his St. James Church burns to the ground in a suspected act of arson, a conflagration of a different sort rages up in town: The public university on whose land the church resides attempts to use the tragedy to keep it closed for good. Rev. Dave commits to fighting that effort even as growing public opinion questions whether a college campus is the proper location for a house of worship – and even if the church is a necessary part of such a diverse community.

The questions being asked, notes Ted McGinley, who plays Ellsworth, Hadleigh University’s dean and Rev. Dave’s close friend, are legitimate: “Does this church represent everyone on campus? Can this church be for everyone on campus? Are we allowed to put money into a church, because when you do you take away from certain areas.” But the way those questions are being debated by most, including Rev. Dave, are not ideal.

“Many of us are so protective about our own views and our own points of view that we stop listening,” McGinley says. “The reality of this movie is that these are all people who may be right in their own groups. This movie is not about ‘the Christians’ versus ‘the villains.’ It’s about everyone. There are a whole bunch of people in this movie who aren’t incorrect. They’re just two different sides, and they’re not listening to each other.”

Into this contentious environment comes Pearce Hill, Rev. Dave’s brother, a big-city lawyer who drifted away from his family years earlier, when he drifted away from his Christian faith. The siblings’ reunion is rocky on multiple levels, but Dave has nowhere else to turn in his fight to rebuild his church. “Pearce is reluctant to help, but Dave is his brother, so he decides to help,” says John Corbett. “But there’s also something about returning home and breaking through those walls they put up after drifting apart. As it turns out, we find a greater love and understanding when we find a common denominator of leaning on each other. I come alongside my brother to conquer something that was insurmountable.” That breakthrough is, at the micro level, what GOD’S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN DARKNESS hopes to be at the macro level. “This film allows conversation to be OK,” White notes. “It says, ‘Hey, let’s talk about this,’ instead of just beating you over the head with what I believe is right or what your parents believe is right or what your friends believe is right. Let’s just open up and talk about it.” Jennifer Cipolla, who plays Sydney, one of the college students who brashly challenges the wisdom and relevance of having a church on her university’s campus, says the way in which the film encourages dialogue is “going to get audiences’ heads turning.” “It’s not about trying to sway their ideas or make them think a different way, but just think in general. And most of all to come together,” she says. “The idea of this movie isn’t you have to think one way or the other. The idea is that all of us can come together and we can all have our different opinion – and that’s OK.” Jennifer’s castmates, up and down the credits, agree: “My hope is that the overarching narrative of this story would bring light into people’s hearts – feelings of unity and compassion as opposed to anger and frustration,” says Shane Harper, who returns as Josh Wheaton, the role he popularized in the original film. “I want people to be encouraged that we’re in a time that we need the church to be the church and reach out and be loving and be gracious. This film is called A LIGHT IN DARKNESS for a reason: There’s a lot of darkness in the world right now, and we need to focus on grace and compassion and unity rather than division.” “This story is amazing to me,” says Benjamin Onyango, who makes his third franchise appearance as Dave’s best friend and co-pastor, Rev. Jude. “There are all of these conflicts, but there is common ground they are looking to find to end the arguments and work toward something that will benefit the entire community.”

“This film’s important because it can spur a conversation among people with differing views in today’s culture, where oftentimes the loudest voice is the only one we hear,” Corbett says. “And

this film illustrates honest and positive interacting between people who think differently, and it’s done with respect and compassion.” “It’s really about not being judgmental, but loving,” McGinley says. “Just because somebody has a different point of view, a different idea of what they think is right and wrong, it’s OK. It doesn’t mean we can’t listen to each other. That we can’t work it out. Because butting heads, constant conflict, is never going to work. We’re all in this together; it’s not going away. So let’s work together and find a way. And what a great way to do it – through God and with God.” “Our biggest desire is for believers to walk away from this film and stop saying to each other, ‘We’re victims in this.’ When it comes to atheists, especially, we like to play the us vs. them game. And that’s not the case,” Producer Brittany Yost says. “We really need to understand how to minister through love, through unity, through community. “We can easily get caught up in our own bubbles, and I love challenging people to think outside of their own bubbles,” Yost adds. “That’s the challenge to us as Christians, to really explore what it means to love our enemies and love our neighbors as ourselves. If we continually separate ourselves from others, if we continue to say, ‘They don’t understand; they’re not part of my world, they’re not part of my church,’ then they’re not going to know who Christ is.” Key to this theme playing out onscreen are the experiences of Sydney and her boyfriend Teo (Schwayze) – and their friends Adam (Mike C. Manning) and Keaton (Samantha Boscarino), who begin the film dating but break up soon thereafter. The Hadleigh students come at the question of St. James Church’s viability and community relevance from different perspectives; Sydney, Teo, and Adam are skeptical at best, while Keaton is struggling to hold on to her faith amid questions about the way those around her practice it. “[Keaton’s] in that time in her life when she’s figuring out what she actually believes, and she’s surrounded by all these different perspectives,” Boscarino says. “It’s a really interesting journey because she’s confronting all these tough questions and has to deal with these moral issues.” “What she struggles with the most is seeing how the church is operating in this sensitive time of tension,” Boscarino adds. “She hasn’t been happy with the way the pastor, who is supposed to be the ultimate example and leader, is dealing with it. So she learns that the pastor is human – he’s not Jesus, a perfect role model.” Jennifer Taylor, who plays Meg, owner of a restaurant/soup kitchen who has a budding romance with Rev. Dave, says a line spoken by Keaton was key to her desire to do the movie. “When [Keaton] says to Dave, ‘Everybody knows what the church is against, but not what we’re for,’ I just thought it was so beautiful,” Taylor says. “I think there are so many people who don’t go to church, and that’s what they hear. But this movie shows them. This is what we’re for. I don’t have to believe what you believe, but I will lay down my life for you. When I read

the end of the script, I was literally crying. It’s just such a beautiful picture of how we should be acting in our everyday lives. Love permeates this whole movie.” Including the perspective of the Millennial generation, Yost explains, is key to fostering the change the movie hopes to create. “Our youth especially are wanting to address these tough questions,” Yost says. “And instead of asking them, they’re just running from them. And typically running away from the church. We want people to engage those questions, because the more questions they ask, the more conversations we have, the more people are going to find God.” “This is a time when it’s OK to ask questions. It’s OK to question our relationship with God. That’s a healthy thing,” Yost adds. “We want this film to be one that Christians and non-Christians can use as a tool, to reach out to believers and non-believers alike. It’s a vehicle to allow you to dig deeper into what it means to have a relationship with God.” And what does it mean? Who better to ask than Rev. Dave himself. “The message of this movie is how do we as Christians, as individual believers, relate to others? How do we be a light in darkness?,” White says. “The biggest thing I hope all believers will take away is that Jesus was about love. How do we relate to those in need? How to we encourage them? Uplift them? Care for them? “Ultimately that’s what this film is about. I don’t think it’s exactly what people will expect. I think it’s more than what they will expect.”

IS GOD GOOD ALL THE TIME? The interplay between Rev. Dave (David A.R. White) and Rev. Jude (Benjamin Onyango) in discussing the character and constancy of God. “God is good,” one of them will say. “All the time,” the other will respond, adding: “And all the time …” to which the first concludes, “God is good.” Those words are heard again in GOD’S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN DARKNESS, but the context in

which they are said may surprise even the staunchest fans. “As much as that phrase has resonated with audiences, many times all of us question it in our personal walk with God,” Producer Brittany Yost says. “Is God good all the time? When challenges happen, when crises and tragedies happen, is God still good? We really wanted to examine in this film the personal walk of a man of faith, a leader, being challenged with whether God really is good all the time. Where is He in times of hardship and struggle?”

Rev. Dave’s challenges are legion. He begins the film having just been released from jail for not submitting his sermons for scrutiny by city officials. He endures the loss of his church at the hands of an unknown arsonist in a blaze that leaves deep personal tragedy in its wake. The university the church established generations ago is trying to block his efforts to rebuild. The community is at odds over the value of the church in today’s more “enlightened” age. And while all this is taking place he’s trying to carve out enough normalcy to pursue a tentative romance with Meg (Jennifer Taylor), who runs the city’s soup kitchen. White says the character he portrays represents good people everywhere who struggle with bad things – sometimes of the their own making, sometimes not. “In life there’s a lot of hardship. There’s a lot of loss. There are many times life doesn’t go like we think it should or we want it to,” White says. “Rev. Dave goes through a lot in this movie – but that’s life. What is endearing about this film is that this character is just an everyday man who hopefully everyone can relate to.” That he is also a pastor – a man who serves God vocationally – should not surprise anyone, White notes from his own life. His father was a pastor for 40 years, and was in no way immune to the ups and downs and twists of fate life throws at everyone. “From the outside perspective we can look at pastors and think, ‘Eh, they’ve got it all together.’ But nobody really thinks about everything they have to go through,” White explains. “A church is made up of however many people – 50 or 1,000 or 10,000. Think about that. We as individuals often have a hard time getting along with our friends. Or our family members. Think about what that pastor has to go through just to deal with all the people in his or her congregation. That’s a difficult thing to do. So I like that this film looks at that and takes the story in an organic real life way of what not just a pastor has to go through, but what an individual has to go through.” Rev. Dave is hardly the only character in GOD’S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN DARKNESS who is walking a road that has had, or still has, its share of bumps. Corbett points out that Pearce, who thinks his life is set as a successful attorney who walked away from his faith decades earlier, winds up confronting some demons of his own even as he helps his brother in his legal battle. “He learns that there are times we question God’s presence and reasoning and we have to know that this is normal, and that God understands even in times when we’re angry or questioning him. He gets it,” Corbett says. “Sometimes we find those answers later in life, in the middle of circumstances where we least expect it, but when our hearts and minds are ready to receive it.” It is precisely because Meg has experienced turmoil in her own life, Taylor says, that she is able to be a comfort to the man for whom she is falling in love. “Meg, based on her past, she’s had a lot of pain in her life. So she sees that in Dave,” Taylor says. “She sees him suffering. And she wants to help him. She kind of cuts through all those barriers that people put up and cuts right through it.”

Even Josh Wheaton, the hero of the first film, comes back to his college community to run St. James Church’s student ministry after graduating from law school – with some extra baggage, according to Shane Harper, the actor who plays him in both movies. “Some things have happened to Josh in GOD’S NOT DEAD that led him to his current philosophy of life and faith,” Harper says. “He’s now very much about, ‘Let’s not call to arms, but let’s call to love.’ And you have to go through some dark things to get there.” Those challenges have deepened Josh’s wisdom to such an extent, Harper adds, that he’s the one giving spiritual advice to Rev. Dave this time around. The role of college student at a crossroads is now filled by Keaton (Samantha Boscarino), who finds her friends’ passionate skepticism of Christianity jarring not just to her worldview, but to her perceived place in the world. “This is a great opportunity to show the struggles you deal with in your early to mid-20s, especially growing up in the church and coming to a place where you you really have to examine what you always believed,” Boscarino explains. “Keaton has to decide, like so many young people do today, whether she really believes it and if it’s really that important to her. Or is this just a cultural thing she’s accepted? She challenges Rev. Dave with what she thinks is right and wrong with the church. And that fuels amazing growth for both of them.” But the characters aren’t alone in the growth they experience as they dig deeply into what they believe about God in the wake of tragedy and hardship. Mike C. Manning, who plays Adam, Keaton’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, admits “there have been a lot of moments in my life where I’ve been searching for answers. And I’ve felt lost, and worked through the process of discovering the answers I needed.” Academy Award® winning actress Tatum O’Neal, who plays Hadleigh administrator Barbara Solomon, believes the film points the way to hope. Even though she was “turned off” by religion in her youth, she returned to the faith decades later and found the kind of lasting comfort and calm that had so long eluded her. “I feel like I’ve been given a real big second chance in all areas of my life – work, parenting, just life – and that’s been for a while now. So I’m honored to be a part of a movie that reveals the truth of how to press through and overcome those things we struggle with.”

THIS MOVIE STANDS ALONE Creating a movie that captured the essence of what made the first two GOD’S NOT DEAD films resonate with audiences but still carved out exciting and meaningful new ground for itself was the filmmakers’ goal from the onset. Producer Brittany Yost says she and her colleagues “wrestled a lot” with the story and its themes. “We ended up challenging ourselves with looking at today’s issues. And we landed on a very personal story that looks at very personal issues,” she says. “The fans of GOD’S NOT DEAD can get really excited about this film. It’s a totally different approach than we’ve taken in the past.” That approach includes more action than ever before, and some plot twists that will leave some mouths agape, according to Benjamin Onyango, who reprises his role as Rev. Jude. “People are going to be shocked at certain things that happen onscreen,” he says. “But the message is still the same. That’s why it’s called A LIGHT IN DARKNESS – it’s a message that spreads the truth of God and enlightens people that there’s a better path to follow that will lead to a better place.” In doing so, McGinley says, the movie “cuts a wider swatch” of audience appeal than the typical faith-based film. “Here’s the conundrum when you do these films,” says McGinley. “There’s a huge group of people that don’t want to see it because it’s ‘one of those movies.’ And there’s another group of people who are only going to see it because it is ‘one of those movies.’ So the idea is to make it something where people don’t have to be hit over the head with verse, but the people who recognize love, faith and grace will see it in the film. And the people who just come to see the film will be taken aback by love and grace and faith. And say, ‘What was that?’”

Jennifer Taylor, who plays Meg, the love interest of Rev. Dave (David A.R. White), is equally thrilled GOD’S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN DARKNESS doesn’t “fall into the trap of a lot of faith-based films” that only preach to the choir. “You have an audience that wants to see faith-affirming content, and I think that’s awesome. But if you’re trying to reach a broader audience, you have to open it up a little,” explains Taylor. “This movie does that. No matter what your faith is, you can

look at this movie and go, ‘Huh. I never thought of that.’ From both sides. Any side. This movie really fills a gap between Christians and non-Christians. It will bring a little bit more understanding to both sides. A little bit more healing.”

12

“We’re calling the church, and the people who’ve been hurt by the church, to heal and rebuild,” says Shane Harper, who stars as Josh Wheaton. “Because, quite frankly, if we don’t, if we just get stuck in the tension and we can’t have that gracious resolve, things will just get more contentious and darker. I think the focus is more on the unity and less on the division. It’s going to be refreshing for a lot of people to see how we wrap this one up.” For White, a producer of the film as well as its star, the latest movie is the perfect mix of past and present offering hope for the future. “What the GOD’S NOT DEAD [films have] been about is taking these questions that are being asked not just by people of faith but by human beings everywhere, and showing how they relate to our existence and answering them in honest and inspirational ways,” he says. “This movie is as relevant today as the others were during their release, because no matter what side you’re on, it brings important issues to light and opens up conversation.”
