GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based

navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellite placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense.

INTRODUCTION

Continue……

GPS was originally intended for military application, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS work in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

General Information

• The first GPS satellite was launched 1978.• A full constellation of 24 satellite was achieved in

1994.• Each satellite is built to last about 10 years.

Replacements are constantly being built and launched into orbit.

• A GPS satellite weighs approximately 2,000 pounds and is about 17 feet across with the solar panels extended.

• Transmitter power is only 50 watts or less.

How it work?

• GPS satellites broadcast radio signals providing their location, statues, and precise time form on- board automatic clocks.

• The GPS radio signals travel through space at the speed of light. More than 299,792 km/second .

Continue….

• A GPS device receives the radio signal, nothing their exact time of arrival, and used these to calculate its distance from each satellite in view.

• Once a GPS device know its distance from at least four satellite ,it can used geometry to determine its location on Earth three dimension.

Application in Mining

• The entire opencast mine earthmoving process can be monitored and enhanced by GPS equipped heavy earth moving mining machinery (HEMM).

• Computerized mine operations management, monitoring and diagnostic system, transmission of loading instructions to dumpers etc for better control.

GEOGRAPHY INFORMATION SYSTEM

A GIS (geographic information system) enables you to envision the geographic aspects of a body of data. Basically, it lets you query or analyze a database and receive the results in the form of some kind of map.

Since many kinds of data have important geographic aspects, a GIS can have many uses: weather forecasting, sales analysis, population forecasting, and land use planning, to name a few.

GIS use in Mining

Mining companies use GIS to actively monitor the environmental impacts that may be caused by their activities. Geologists use GIS to analyze and map soils, vegetation, surface hydrology, and groundwater.

Esri and its business partners actively promote sustainable development by collaborating on many GIS applications specifically designed for environmental study.
