I just received a mailing about

a special women's event on

Saturday, April 6th at

Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley. I know

nothing of it personally, but it's part of Aspire

Women's events. It features four national speakers,

in person, and as their blurb says, “an evening full of

laughter, learning, stories and music.” For more

information and a group order form, please see the

UMW side of the kiosk in the Narthex. Nancy Milne

GENERAL CONFERENCE 2019 ~ What happened and what does it mean?

Delegates of the 2019 General Conference passed the Traditional Plan (with a vote of 438-384). This plan

retains restrictions against homosexual pastors and same-sex marriage, and also seeks stricter enforcement

of the Book of Discipline rules around those restrictions. Within the Traditional Plan there were seventeen

different petitions or paragraphs. Prior to the Traditional Plan passing, each petition had been referred to

the Judicial Council and seven were deemed constitutional while ten were deemed unconstitutional (one of

which was deemed partially unconstitutional). Judicial Council will review the Traditional Plan as it was

passed. Only what is deemed constitutional will become a part of our church law in the Book of Discipline.

Delegates also passed petitions that secure some financial commitments of pensions for retired clergy.

Finally, delegates passed a disaffiliation, or ‘exit’, plan. The original plan had previously been deemed uncon-

stitutional. While there was an amendment, it is unclear if the amendment fixed the issue(s) with constitu-

tionality.

What does this mean? The short answer is: We don’t really know yet. The Judicial Council will review all

that was passed. Anything that they deem unconstitutional does not go into our Book of Discipline. So for now

we wait.

And while we wait, we at Grace will continue to be the church. Remember, “The church is not a building. The

church is not a steeple.” (and I would add the church is not an institution or governing body.) “The church is

the people”. You and me. All of us together make up the church. And so we will continue to be the church at

Grace, striving to unite those we touch with the grace of God and transforming lives to become the heart,

hands and feet of Jesus in the world.

The decisions of General Conference have left some deeply saddened, hurt and angry, while others are feel-

ing like The UMC took a step toward living more faithfully. However you are feeling, I invite you to pause and

breathe. Stay with me and Grace and one another through Lent. Let’s journey with Christ through the wil-

derness, to Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and celebrate the resurrection on Easter morning

together.

Let’s continue to be the church God has called us to be.

When will we know more? The Judicial Council meets again at the end of April and as soon as I know more,

I’ll communicate that with you.

On Monday, March 11th, I’ll join pastors from around the Minnesota Annual Conference for an All-Clergy

Gathering with Bishop Ough to discuss and debrief what took place at the 2019 General Conference.

Thank you for your commitment to Christ, to one another and to transforming the world through our mission

and ministry together.

Grace & Peace, Pastor Jen

Please help support our Girl Scouts by purchasing cookies from Kiera Palacio, Meg Molitor, Alaina Chmielewski, Katie and Kristin Withrow and Claire Conaway. Cookie sales have begun and will be sold through Sunday, March 24th. A table is set up in the narthex with a spot for each girl. The girls will be at their spots as their schedules allow. We hope there will be someone selling each Sunday but can’t guar-antee it. If you would like to support the girls, but do not want all those delicious cookies in your home, you can donate them to our church for coffee hour, or you can donate boxes to our troops overseas. Just let the girls know what you would like done with the cookies you purchase and they will take care of the rest.

You are cordially invited to this fundraising event on March 10th between services. We

will be serving from 8:45 to 10:00 a.m. Pancakes, sausage, fruit and juice are on the menu.

All proceeds will go to the Re-Roofing Campaign. This will be a free-will donation. All are

welcome. Serving up this wonderful food and fun activity are your board of trustees: Ron

Frattare, Ray Walker, Carol Greibrok, Laurie Farnen, Dale Osborn and Aaron Swanson.

RISE TO THE CHALLENGE: Which group will win the bragging rights of raising the most for the roof?

Grace UMC is in the midst of our Re-Roofing Campaign (running from October 2018 to July 2019). This Campaign is

seeking to raise $100,000.00 to completely replace the original roof over the Fellowship Hall, kitchen, nursery,

youth room, prayer room, and adult Sunday school room as well as mechanical, electrical, storage and other rooms in

the older portion of the building, and also fix some leaks in the newer portion of the building (over the narthex,

sanctuary and education wing).

Nearly 40 percent of the $100,000.00 has already been received and is in the bank! Another 20 percent has been

pledged by members and friends of Grace UMC that has yet to be given, but we trust will come in before the end

of our Campaign in July of this year.

This means roughly 40 percent is left to be raised. And that’s where our challenge comes in. For a little friendly

competition, each group at Grace is being challenged to come up with and carry out a fundraising idea of their

choosing. This can be as simple as everyone in the group pitching in a dollar amount into a group collection, or as

elaborate as 5K fun run, walk-a-thon, auction or whatever else you can dream up and make happen.

As group fundraisers wrap up, we’ll tally the totals and keep you updated on the runnings to see which group will win

the bragging rights of raising the most for the Re-Roofing Campaign. Let the challenge begin!
