Is deis iontach iad Gradaim Pobail an Chathaoirligh aitheantas athabhairt don tréanobair a dhéanann daoine agus pobail ar fud anChontae agus an obair den scoth seo a cheiliúradh. Léiríonn na Gradaimraon leathan gníomhaíochtaí pobail agus deonacha nach féidir athomhas ach ar féidir aitheantas a thabhairt dóibh.

Ó toghadh mé mar Chathaoirleach an Chontae, bhí deis agam níos móden obair seo a fheiceáil mé féin ar fud an Chontae. Táim go hiomlánumhlaithe ag an tiomantas agus ag an obair chrua a dhéanann napobail gach lá. Is rí luachmhar an obair a dhéanann siad.

Welcome from the Cathaoirleach of the County of Galway

I am delighted to welcome you here tonight to theCathaoirleach’s Community Awards 2015 for County Galway.

The Cathaoirleach’s Community Awards is a great opportunity toacknowledge and celebrate the great work that people andcommunities are involved in around the County. The Awards representa broad range of community and voluntary activities that cannot bemeasured but can be rewarded.

Since I’ve become Cathaoirleach of the County I’ve had the opportunityto see more of this work first hand all around the County. I am trulyhumbled by the dedication and hard work that communities areinvolved in every day. Their contribution is invaluable.

Tonight is a special night for you, whether you are a volunteer, amember of a community group or a business representative supportingyour area. I thank you all for your hard work and hope that you have alovely evening.

Tá lúcháir orm páirt a ghlacadh i nGradaim Pobail anChathaoirligh i mbliana. Tá athrú ag teacht ar an Rialtas Áitiúil. Tá nanaisc atá againn le pobail agus le gníomhaireachtaí eile á neartú againnchun an tseirbhís is fearr is féidir a chur ar fáil.

Déanfaidh Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe a míle dícheall freastal adhéanamh ar phobail chomh maith agus is féidir linn agus tacú leo.Táim an-bhródúil as a bheith i mo Phríomh Fheidhmeannach arlimistéar údaráis áitiúil a bhfuil spiorad pobail chomh láidir sin ann.

Fuarthas beagnach 90 ainmniúchán le haghaidh na nGradam saniomlán. Mar is eol dúinn, ní féidir ach buaiteoir amháin a bheith ann ingach catagóir. Mar sin féin, déanaim comhghairdeas libh go léir asbhur gcuid oibre agus tá súil agam go mbeidh oíche an-taitneamhachagaibh ar fad.

I am delighted to be part of the Cathaoirleach’s Community Awards thisyear. Local Government is changing. We are strengthening our linkswith communities and other agencies to provide the best possibleservice that we can.

Galway County Council will continue to serve and support communitiesas best we can. I am very proud to be the Chief Executive of a localauthority area that has such a strong community spirit.

Nearly 90 Award nominations were received in total. As we know therecan only be one winner in each category. However I congratulate all ofyou on your work and hope you all have a very pleasant evening.

The Award

The Awards tonight have been specially handsculpted by Marcin Calka of Reborn Art Studio,Ballyglunnin, Tuam. The design was inspired by the shape of the letter'G' which is the signature of Galway. The G is sculpted from white ashwhich is the tree of strength. The base is made from walnut, which is asymbol of wealth. They are joined together with three stainless steelrods, symbolising durability.

Marcin also produces a wide range of gifts and small sculptures.Marcin’s signature sculpture piece is his ‘Balancing Boats’. These arewooden sculptures that imitate boats sailing on the ocean, inspired bythe Galway Hooker.
