WELCOME TO RØROS! The TAF International Celebration Of Architecture

The Trondheim Chapter (TAF ) of the National Assosiation of Norwegian Architects has since 1988 been arranging architectural celebrations at Røros. Thesebi-annual have over the years become important events for celebrating the common bonds between architects irrespective of where they work in theworld. And where architects congregate, projects and buildings are presented, discussed, debated, - and enjoyed, as a matter of course.

There were no real high-flying ideas behind the initiative; no problems to be solved, no particular issue to be debated. What we simply wanted to do wasto invite fellow practicing architects from around the world, primarily from areas that we knew little about, architects that struggled with the same chal-lenges we do, but in another setting - and often without due recognition. Out of this came the idea of a celebration: an event that celebrates the tribulati-ons we all go through in creating buildings that enhance the human environment, - and the exuberance felt when buildings come out "warm, dry andnoble", as the late Samuel Mockbee said.

International exchange between architects is easy, too easy sometimes. That is why we make an issue of architects meeting face to face. That is why weinvite lecturers to present the buildings or projects that carry particular significance to them. This is why we meet in the town of Røros, one of Norway'sfour World Heritage Sites, because it is such an extraordinary nice place to be together; and that is why we make a point of keeping it informal.

The architects invited are people we have learnt about by word of mouth, through what to us in Norway would be 'obscure' publications, or through theregular architectural press. Their work has to carry social significance and be architecturally innovative or challenging. And they have to be nice people.

On behalf of the Røros Commitee 2004Tore Wiger, Siri Rørholt, Are Øyasæter, Christiane Johannsen, Sverre Andreassen, Per-Arne Tefre and Hans Skotte.

Kengo Kuma was born in Kanagawa, Japan in 1954. He completed his master`s degree atTokyo University in 1979. From 1985 to 1986 he was a visiting scholar at Columbia University,New York, where he since 1994 also been a visiting critic. He founded Kengo Kuma & Associatesin 1990

Kengo Kuma has often expressed a desire to “erase architecture” to make it vanish. He respectsthe nature of the site, and tries to dissolve architecture into nature. For instance, the Kiro-sanObservatory (1994) is embedded in the mountain and its architectural form is erased. In the water/Glass Villa (1995) every element of architecture is made of glass and when seen fromthe water the architecture becomes a transparent object. For Kengo Kuma digital technologies areanother way of de- territorializing architecture. He has explored them in particular in recent lands-cape projects, which are liquid combinations of computerised surfaces and textures kinds of archi-tecture-less architecture.

Among his major works are: The Water /Glass Villa (1995) for which he received the AIABenedictus Award; Space Design of the Japanese Pavilion, Venice Bienale (1995) A Noh TheatreStage in the Forest, the Toyoma Centre for performing Arts (1997), for which he received theArchitectural Institute of Japan Annual Award; and the Museum Hiroshige Ando (2000), forwhich he received the Director General of Forestry Agency Prize.

Helen & Hard is a young architecture office located in Stavanger at the west coast of Norway. It has had a wide range of commissions from interior projects, exhibitions, larger building com-missions, urban planning and conceptual scenario planning.Several projects reflect the manifold relation between the offshore-industry in Stavanger and atopography of local micro-processes.

Instead of an essentialistic position based on identity or predefined theories and ethics, H&H is try-ing to explore a more open and relational ”project space” which allows experimentation andnegotiation.

The ”project space” is generated by assembling and interacting with multiple parameters of anexisting social, technical and semiotic context.

H&H interest is not lying in specialisation or professionalism, but in investigating territorial multipli-city`s, capacities of interaction, possible assembly patterns and tendencies within the ”projectspace”.

Rifat Chadirji is Iraq’s most celebrated architect – although he left the country in the early1980s. By then he had made his mark throughout the whole of the Middle East. All his life RifatChadirji has worked on joining the qualities and forms of traditional architecture with that ofmodern architecture. In extraordinarily rich and subtle ways Chadriji had brought new technologi-es and materials into regional settings where they still bring awe. And bombs. When speakingabout Chadirji’s most appreciated building, the Post and Telegraph Offices in Baghdad, a fellowIraqi architect bring forth the following:” This beauty was bombed in 1991 and 2003, still stan-ding with pride, like Iraq and Iraqis. We as Iraqi Architects will go back, stand together, shoulderto shoulder, and build hundreds of these masterpieces for a better future for our children”.Chadirji can still inspire, his quest for fusing the traditional with the modern is today a challengeway beyond architecture. The tragedy of Iraq is not only what the UK/US destroyed, there is alsothe horror of what they will come up with as replacements. Chadirji’s buildings offer profoundadvice. If the occupying forces will not listen, we will!

’The sand of an arctic volcanic desert are black, shadowless and constantly shifting. There are notrees, buildings or roads and footprints are instantly erased. To survive one must watch the celesti-al bodies, focus og the horizon, heed the warning of the winds and make clear and precise judge-ments.’

From the practice statement of Studio Granda

With a poetic view of architecture the work of Studio Granda often focuses on the relation tothe landscape and surroundings. The process of design is evident in the care for material, detailand craft.

Studio Granda was established in 1987 by the Icelandic architect Margrét Hardardóttir and Britisharchitect Steve Christer. Based in Reykjavik they gained international attention for the ReykjavikCity Hall (1987-92), and the Supreme Court of Iceland (1993-96). With their more recent projcts;a car park, garden and public space for a shopping mall (1998-99) and the Reykjavik Art Museum(1998-2000), carved from the old stucture of a concrete warehouse the studio consistently illu-strated how every element can be crafted with convincing care.

Throughout the years Studio Granda's work has ranged from prestigious buildings and city plan-ning to small interior works, artistic installations and private houses.

Steve Christer has been taught at the Architectural Assosiation in London and has lectured widely.

Smiljan Radic was born in Santiago de Chile in 1965. He graduated from the PontificalCatholic University of Chile in 1989 and went on to study at the Venice University of Architecture.Together with the architects Nikolas Skutelis and Flavio Zenon he won the competition for thedesign of Freedom Square in Iraklion, Greece in 1993. One year later, he won the competition forthe Sergio Larraín García Moreno Latin-American Information and Documentation Center atSantiago (1994-96) together with Teodoro Fernández Larañaga and Cecilia Puga Larraín. In 2ooo,together with Eduardo Castillo and Ricardo Serpell, he won the competition for the design of thecivic district and public buildings in Concepcíon. Smiljan Radic belongs to a group of young archi-tects in Latin-America, who seek to understand the challenges which are provided through thecountry’s conditions and try to respond to them through their architecture. The focus in Radic’work lies on the design of detached houses in the countryside of central Chile and of models foremergency shelters. For the detached house at Nercón he won the ProCobre prize for the bestarchitectural design at the 12th Biennal of Chilean architecture.

Michael Lloyd has been an important contributor to several Røros Celebrations. With a pro-found understanding of architecture he had made several closing addresses that rest in ourmemory just as much as the preceding lectures. Michael Lloyd started our working with Alto inHelsinki in the 1950s, moved to Norway – and then out into the wide world. For the record: hehas worked in 20 different countries, of which six in Africa. He was organizing a new School ofArchitecture in Kumasi, Ghana when he was called to London in the late 1960s to become headof the AA School of Architecture. From then on his major contribution was in educating goodarchitects rather than practising as one. After AA he was to head two more schools of architectu-re, and his ideas and insight were instrumental when the Bergen School of Architecture was esta-blished in the 1980s. In addition he has been Visiting Professor at several universities, in betweendoing international consultancy work, which also brought him to Baghdad – on the request ofRifat Chadirji!. There are always circles closing at Røros.
