Greek GeographyDescriptive Writing

Hello, and welcome to a brief description of the geography of ancient Greece. As you watch, you should have pencil and paper, or another writing tool, handy. You should be trying to write descriptive sentences for each slide you see.

Descriptive Writing

• Presents a word-picture of something, somewhere or someone:

• color, shape, line, texture, sound;

• affect, emotion, frame, image, portrait, landscape.

A descriptive sentence is meant to evoke a portrait or a landscape. It is an attempt to show what someone looks like or what a place looks like. Sometimes there is an emotional component, but mostly it’s about these elements.

Example of Description

• Hebe with all speed fitted on the eight-spoked wheels of bronze that were on either side of the iron axle-tree. The felloes of the wheels were of gold, imperishable, and over these there was a tire of bronze, wondrous to behold. The naves of the wheels were silver, turning round the axle upon either side. The car itself was made with plaited bands of gold and silver, and it had a double top-rail running all round it. From the body of the car there went a pole of silver, on to the end of which she bound the golden yoke, with the bands of gold that were to go under the necks of the horses

• Homer, The Iliad, book V, section v.

Here’s an ancient example of descriptive sentences. There’s only minimal sense of time passing as Hebe sets up the chariot and yokes the horses. Mostly it’s about describing the chariot.

Practice Description

• For each slide....

• Write 2-3 sentences that describe the scene.

• Use images of color, shape, line, texture, and activity; and...

• Be as specific as you can be.

As you see each slide, try writing a few descriptive sentences. Tonight, as part of your homework, you’ll be writing a general description of Greece, to which you’ll add these sentences.

A Map of Greece

Notice in particularly the position of Mt. Olympus, the region of Thessaly in the north, and Attica in the south, and Boeotia in the center. The island of Thera is almost directly north of the center of the island of Crete, as well.
