• A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or

completely covered with vegetation and soil, or a

growing medium, planted over a waterproofing

membrane.

This does not refer to roofs which are merely colored

green, as with green roof shingles. It may also include

additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage

and irrigation systems.

ESRI Canada's Garden in the Sky

ESRI Canada (esricanada.com) officially opened a roof top garden at the head office in Toronto, ON, on Tuesday, September 15, 2009. This green space was designed to provide a meeting and gathering place where staff could experience nature in the city and also to help make the environment more sustainable. This video highlights the environmental and community benefits of a green roof and chronicles the development of ESRI Canada's green roof.
