The brutal killing of 66 year oldJoe Herholdt was described as“completely unacceptable incivilised society’ by Judge RishiSeegobin when he sentenced thethree accused to life plus fifteenyears last Friday in thePietermaritzburg High Court oncharges of murder and robberywith aggravating circumstances.19 year old Lungisani Zungu,20year old Sifiso Phungula and 20

year old Lindokhule Mbhese, despite being caught redhanded, had the temerity, theJudge said to plead not guilty.

Their belated apology to Joe’swidow, Thelma. before thesentencing had “come a bit toolate”and the Judge also said thattheir youth was not a factor

because of the viciousness ofthe crimes committed.

Joe Herholdt was tied up and

stabbed repeatedly –the threehad then conducted a search fora safe and money – this wascaught short when they wereconfronted by Greytown Policeand Field Security guards.

In handing down the sentence,Judge Seegobin also said he hadtaken into account thedevastating impact of Joe’smurder on his family and thecommunity.

Herholdt killers get life and 15 years

The festive season is HERE– atime of giving and a time of buy-ing. The pressure to overspendisofficiallyon!Planningandbud-geting is key to avoid getting intodebtover thisperiod.Legal&Taxwould like to encourage you toconsider how much you can af-ford to spend and to stick to yourbudget to prevent unnecessarydebt.

While credit-hungry South Af-rican are in dire need of a robustculture of saving, they also needto be educated about the pitfallsof giving in to easily accessiblecredit they simply cannot afford. The festive season is a particu-larly vulnerable time for all in-come brackets and consumershave to remember the demandsof going into a new year.

Many people begin the NewYear broke- a few tips on how tosave and stretch your hard-earned money and not get toocarried away by the spirit of theseason…

•The festive season is a time ofspecials. But try not to thinkSALE – always think SAVE. Aword of advice: pay the price ad-vertised! According to the Con-

sumer Act, suppliers mustcharge you the amount adver-tised or reflecting on an item socheck the price at the till beforepaying or double check your re-ceipt.

•Remindyourself ofwhatyourneeds are and don’t confusethem with your wants.

•If you are a property ownerwith an access bond, transferyour full year-end bonus into thebond and only take outmoney asandwhen needed. This will havea positive effect on the interestyou pay on your bond, and alsoassist with that extra bit of self-discipline required in curtailingspending your bonus.

Budget for things that youknow you will have to pay in thenew year, like school fees anduniforms.

•Calculate your budget forJanuary and make sure that youleave that money in your sepa-rate savings account. Also set asum aside for emergencies.

SIR,Since the early 1970s, our re-

search group, Stichting MissingAirmen Memorial Foundation(SMAMF), has been investigatingthe air-war over the northern partof the Netherlands. It is our mainobjective to gather as much infor-mation as possible about the air-craft and the airmen which camedown over the province of Fries-landduring thesecondWorldWar.We consider it very important tokeep the memory to the air-waralive, especially since many flyerspaid with their lives for our free-dom.

Over theyears,ourextensivear-chival research brought us in con-tact withmany former airmen, pi-lot-helpers and other researchersall over the world. In some cases,we have been able to clear up thefate of pilots who were reportedmissing in action. On a few occa-sionswealso succeeded in return-ing recoveredpersonal items fromthe flyers to their families. Our re-searchgroupmadeseveralexhibi-tionsabout theair-warandcloselycooperateswith the FrisianMuse-um and Resistance Museum inLeeuwarden. More informationabout the SMAMF is to be found

She died 16 January1915. The pilot had one brothernamed Kenyon Adkins Stanford,born12March1911.Hewasnevermarried and had no children. Un-fortunately we do not know what

happened with him.It is known that the estate of

Harold Shippey Stanford was in-herited by his niece Mrs. FelicityO'Grady née Stanford. She passedaway in Cape Town in 1990 andleft a daughter named TeresaEthelwynne O'Grady (formerlyNash, divorced).

On 16 April 2015, an informa-tion-panel about the Lancaster-crashwill be unveiled inWorkum. The ceremony will be attended byrelatives of the crew-members.Unfortunately no relatives of F/OStanford have been found yet.

Our Foundation has done quitea lot of research into Mr. Stan-ford's next of kin, but was unableto trace Mrs. Teresa O’Grady orothers.

SIR,A while ago there were letters pub-lished in the Greytown Gazettepointing out the sad state of affairsof our once beautiful town...vergesnot cut, overgrown parks, pot holesin the roads, litter etc.Forquite sometimenow, this is, for-

tunately, no longerso.Congratulations to theParksDe-partment and whichever other de-partment is involved, on theneat verges, well kept BotanicalGarden and King Edward Park andthe neat green belts. The potholesare being filled fairly regularly and

it is once again a pleasure to go forwalks ordrive around Greytown.

Hatsoff forattempting tobeautifythe town further by planting plantsintheflowerbedsatsomeof thestopstreets. Perhaps an idea would becreating more of a “ rockery” look

and plantingwaterwise plants suchasaloes,as thiswouldbe less labourintensive and reduce theneed for watering, yet still look at-tractive.Your efforts have not gone unno-ticed.Ruth Drew

FROMthebeginningofDecember, its diffi-cult to find a television or radio pro-gramme or advertisement that does notfeature a Christmas carol extract.

The original Christmas carols actuallyreferred to a circle dance which did nothave any singing - that came later. As thechurch struggled against the influences ofpagan customs, the singing of carols wasbarred from sacred services. However, outside the church, Nativity carols werewritten and became popular.

Saint Francis of Assisi is credited withbringing carols into the formal worship ofthe church during a Christmas MidnightMass in a cave in Greccio, in the provinceof Umbria in 1223.

Carols enjoyed further development andpopularitywhentheywereused in themys-tery plays of the Middle Ages. Wanderingminstrels traveled from hamlet to castle, performing carols in the distant past.

In later years, villages had their ownbands of waits.

Waitswereoriginallywatchmenwhopa-trolled the streets and byways of the oldwalledcitieskeepingguardagainst fireandsinging out the hours of the night. Duringthe holiday season, they would includesome carols for the people along the way, although some folks complained that theywould rather get a good nights sleep thanhave somebody singing under their win-dow. Eventually the term was used to de-scribe groups of musicians who sang andplayed for various civic events during theChristmas season.

Said to the best selling single record ofall time was “White Christmas” written in1940 by Irving Berlin for the 1942 movie“Holiday Inn” starringBingCrosbywho in-

troduced “White Christmas” to the publiconhisNBCradioshow, theKraftMusicHall,December 25, 1941. By the end of the Warit had become the biggest-selling single ofall time.Bing's recording hit the charts on Oct. 3,1942, and rose to #1 on October 31, whereit stayed for an amazing 11 weeks.

In the following years Bing’s recordinghit the top 30 pop charts another 16 times, even topping the charts again in 1945 andJanuary of '47.The song remains Bing’s best-selling re-cording, and the best-selling Christmassingle of all-time Bing's single of “WhiteChristmas” sold more than 30 million cop-ies worldwide and was recognized as thebest-selling single in any music categoryfor more than 50 years until 1998 whenElton John's tribute to Princess Diana,“Candle in theWind”, overtook it in a mat-ter of months.

THE 26th of December is Box-ingDay, but as such is only cele-brated in a few countries

In South Africa it is known asthe Day of Goodwill.

It is said to have started inBritain about 800 years ago.

Onthisday, thealmsboxesfor

the poor, mostly kept in church-es,were traditionallyopenedsothat the contents could be dis-tributed amongst the poor.

Legend has it that the Ro-mans first brought this type ofcollecting box to the UK butused them to collect money for

betting games played duringwinter.

Traditionally, servants weregiven the day off to celebrateChristmaswiththeir familiesonBoxing Day.

26 December is also St Ste-phen's day - but just to confusehistorians there are two St Ste-phens. The first was an earlyfollower of Jesus and was thefirst Christian matyr, being

stoned to death for his belief. The second St Stephen was a

missionary in Sweden roundabout 800. He loved all ani-mals,especially horses. He wasalso amatyr-killed by pagans inSweden.

In Germany, there was tradi-tion that horses would be rid-den inside the church duringthe St Stephen's day service.
