Assignment 3 LIS 630 spring 2012 Rosalind Moore Katie Stollery Administration Module: For this project we set up Group 4 Branch Library in Koha to practice adding patrons, importing MARC records, and create reports from our fictitious library. The initial task of setting up a library was very easy. Going into Koha under “Koha Administrations” then “Libraries and Groups” we were able to set up and create our group library. To create a budget for this library was very easy by clicking on the “Funds and Budget Administration” link and set up a general fund budget of $5000 for our library. Koha gives the user many options for budgets such as choosing budget categories (general, serials, children’s etc) and also allows the user to change the currency or and specify budget dates. Cataloging Module To add MARC records into Koha, we imported two Z39.50 clients to help import record to our library. We used Metro‐Boston Library network and the Hammond Public Library to support our searches.

ReflectionsonKoha Katie‐MypersonalexperienceusingKohahasbeenalearningopportunity.OneaspectofimplementationthatlibrariesholdwhenacquiringanewILSsystemwouldbeishavinganextensivetrainingplanfortheiremployeesandusers.Fromanoviceperspective,Kohaissimpletoself‐teachthebasics,butmoreextensivetrainingwouldberequiredformetofullyusethisILSsystem.IthinkKoha’sstrongestpointisthatausercanself‐teachthemselvesthebasicsofthisprogramsuchasaddingpatrons,addingMARCrecords,checkoutitems,makefines,makelists,etc.,butgoingbeyondthebasicsintosystempreferencesisbeyondaself‐taughtbeginner.ToreallybeabletouseKohatoitsfullestpotential,andmakeitaworthwhileinvestmentforalibrary,wouldrequiretrainingandopportunitiestofurtherexplorethesystemwithoutfearofaccidentlymessingupacriticalaspectoftheprogramthatmightpreventusability(i.e.notbeingabletoimportMARCrecords).Overall,IwouldsaythatmyexperienceusingKohaispositive,butfrustratingattimes.IlearnbestbyhavingsomeoneteachmethenIpracticeformastery,soinbeingabletoteachmyselfhowtousemajorcomponentsoftheILSsuccessfullyreallysayssomethingaboutthequalityoftheKohaprogram.
