An Introduction to Ayers Rock

Ayers Rock is named for the Premier of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers. It’s also known by its Aboriginal name “Uluru”. It is a magnetic mound and the great wonders of the world.

Ayers Rock is owned and run by the local Aborigines. The Australian government handed ownership of the land back to the Aborigines some years ago. It contains natural and culture value.

The Significance of Ayers Rock to The Australian Aborigines

Two cracks in the rock represent places where a warrior slashed the legs of a member of a raiding party.

Ayers Rock is a sacred place. (In Dreamtime, the Kunia people lived there were transformed into rocks. Their features can be seen on Uluru today.

Caves in the rock represent meanings are as follows:

〈 a〉 Some caves are the open mouths of dead warriors who died shouting at their enemies

〈 b〉 Another cave is the open mouth of a grieving mother.

‧His cracked skull and nose can be seen on the rock with 4 holes representing his eyes and nasal passages. Water stains represents his blood.

‧Ayers Rock is a sacred site because of a birthing-cave in the rock. It’s a place where women went in childbirth in the belief that they would have a painless delivery there.

Images of totems make up a large part of Aboriginal art.

Totems were painted on cave, wall, which we title “Rock Art”.

They also drew many totems on the interiors of their huts and their bodies, and carved in wood
