Identify relevant information from text, news, videos and webs.
Convert IUSC units and Anglo-Saxon measurements and the opposite way
around.
Evaluate the size rang of living organism.
Realise that animals evolve by adapting to their environment.
Apply the scientific method: hypothesis formulation, data collection and
hypothesis testing.
 Work in groups cooperatively.
Speak and listen to each other in English.
Review English vocabulary (parts of the animals body, size and
measurement units, multiple and sub-multiples of meter.).
 Practice comparative sentences.
Ten tips for learning success
GRUP D’EXPERIMENTACIÓ PER AL PLURILINGÜISME
1-Interactive web: http://htwins.net/scale2/
2- Summarised text from BBC news
The biggest living organism is a parasitic fungus measuring 2.4 miles (3.8 km) across
in the Blue Mountains in Oregon. It is known as honey fungus (Armillaria solidipes).
Scientist have calculated that the fungus covered an area of 3.7 sq miles (9.6 sq km),
and was somewhere between 1,900 and 8,650 years old.
The large clumps of yellow-brown mushrooms that appear above ground are the
fruiting bodies of much larger organisms. They spread out below surface in search of
new hosts, and underground networks of tubular filaments called mycelia.
Biologists have long debated what constitutes an individual organism. The record-
breaking A. solidipes colony passes the test based on a definition of being made up of
genetically identical cells that can communicate, and that have a common purpose
or can at least coordinate themselves.

1. Placing the fungus of Blue Mountains in my village.
Continuing from the “Live size activity”, students have formulated some interesting
questions. One of these questions has been choose as an extension activity.
How much of Argentona would be occuppied by the fungus of Blue Mountains?
- Search for the map of your village in google maps: Argentona map
- Using the scale of the map, cut a piece of paper corresponding to the extention of
Homgenous fungus of Blue Mountains.
-Overlap this piece of paper with the map.
-Mark the area of Argentona the fungus would occupy.
