FINANCIAL SITUATION

•  $150,000 grants this year ($50,000 for preceding reimbursements)

ACADEMIC PROCEDURES COMMITTEE

AT-LARGE REP. (9/6/13)

•  OVCAA – 23 classroom improvements and 24 classroom tech makeovers completed this summer (arch, geo, art, mill, hig, xi, web)

•  OVSC – UH Manoa has been selected for a Title 9 audit (gender equality in education!) Interviewers will be visiting the campus in October and questioning students / faculty / staff about knowledge of harassment policies, and procedures for filing grievances.

ACADEMIC PROCEDURES COMMITTEE

AT-LARGE REP. (9/6/13)

•  Tobacco Free Campus – policy will go into effect on January 1, 2014 to ban cigarettes, tobacco products and e-cigarettes on campus. There will be a week long event in November.

–  Univeristy sponsering a study about the use of e-cigarettes. Participants get $45 gift card. For more info call 808-441-8184 / Principal Investigator Dr. Pallav Pokhrel

•  International Students Offices – International students are required to get authorization from ISS before they do academic / mandatory and/or volunteer internships or practicums—even if unpaid

PHD FUNDING WORK GROUP AT-LARGE REP. (9/5/13)

•  Pat Cooper – Dean of Graduate Division is retiring in December. Process for hiring her replacement is getting ready to begin.

•  Currently revising mixed-model funding draft 8 => 9

–  Basic model is Years 1-4 students will be funded through GA-ships and in year 5 a competitive Dissertation Completion Fellowship / excludes part-time, distance learning & professional degree track students.

–  Each department will develop their own version that is tailored to their program

–  Looking at adding “best practices in mentorship” component to recommendation

–  Strengthening “continued funding is based on adequate time to degree” verbiage

PHD FUNDING WORK GROUP AT-LARGE REP. (9/5/13)

•  Currently revising mixed-model funding draft 8 => 9

–  Still developing the timeline for implementation, but it will definitely take several years to realize charge fully

–  Still working on: integrating extramural awards / allowing departments to fund beyond 5 years / clearly defining “full funding” / including data collection & metrics to test effectiveness

–  Recommendations for funding structure should be finished in the next 2-3 months

•  Moving from formulating policy to finding solutions - tentative agreement from group to work on identifying potential sources for funding and developing list of suggestions in addition to policy recommendations

STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE

AT-LARGE REP. (9/12/13)

•  Sustainability workgroup update – rolling out the new sustainability major (at graduate level) has been delayed due to budget kerfuffle over the summer ($20 million reduction in projected budget compared to May)

•  Innovative Learning’s e-portfolio recommendation may also be delayed due to funding issues.

•  Tuition-based funding – Chancellor Apple explained his intent to change the way tuition dollars are distributed so that the money goes to the units who teach => GAs who teach will be pulling the money into their units to cover their wages. He plans to roll out changes by July of next year.

•  PhD Funding Workgroup – Request to add grant writing workshops and/or grant application completion to graduate curriculum to funding model

•  Business Processes Workgroup – will begin work soon. If you are interested in administration or business, we need GA representatives for this group (ideally at least 2 people)

"   The graduate student experience and culture is unique to each University of Hawai’i campus. In the past, issues such as

compensation, office space, mentoring, morale, and workload have been neglected by system and campus level administration.

In order to build a positive working relationship and avoid collective bargaining, the chancellor should reach out annually to the graduate student representative body to discuss employment

and compensation, time to degree, research opportunities, research responsibilities, assistantship requirements, hours, and all other issues related to working as a graduate assistant at that

campus.

GREENING

•  University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Strategic Planning Committee has formed a working group to develop new degree programs in Sustainability.
