EXCURSION WITH US

We were surprised and came to realize the frustration of visitors trying to get reliable information about Guatemala, its destinations and the excursions available through the internet and only receiving partial to none of it. So we decided to design this brochure with plenty of that information trying to answer many of our guests endless

questions and curiosities about our country. Since we know some of our guests repeats their visit, we have included some special discounts for them, bonus for medium to large groups and special savings on longer vacations in a more complete excursion visiting the entire country.

FROM WHICH PORT ARE WE EXPECTING YOUR VISIT?PUERTO QUETZAL

Pacific CoastIt is a small and charming cruise terminal. It has an open outdoor market that offer guests a great variety of well finished handcraft, jewelry and a jade museum. Antigua City, Lake Atitlan are well known destinations for cultural tourism. for more active tourism, Pacaya volcano (lava rivers), bird watching, Whale and other marine life watching, sport sail-fishing, horse back-riding are among the activities Guatemala has to offer.

SANTO TOMAS DE CASTILLA

Western Caribbean (Atlantic)It is a commercial container port. However, the national authorities have done a good job building a tourist area, where passengers can find restroom service, fountain sodas, snacks, jewelry (jade), internet access, transportation, and tour operation services. Our booth is located inside the tourist terminal to the right.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Depending the size of the vessel, ships calls at MARINA PEZ VELA(a), if small or at QUETZAL PORT(b) if large. MARINA PEZ VELA is a tourist cruise terminal, while QUETZAL PORT is a commercial port; free shuttles every 15/30-mins from this port to Marina Pez Vela are offered.

ABOUT THE PORT FACILITIES AND AMENITIES

MARINA PEZ VELA: this cruise terminal was awarded as No.1 for the Pacific Coasts for the 2007/2008 cruise season. Offer guests a beautiful open hand-craft market, a jade museum, a cigar bar, an art gallery, live shows, restaurants, pubs, snack bars and transportation services. US Dollars, Euros and mayor credit cards are widely accepted.

RESTROOMS

Plenty of restrooms are available. Also for the physical impaired at Marina Pez Vela.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

There is a Bank (BANCO DE LA REPUBLICA) open every time a ship calls. The exchange rate is about USD1 for Q7.50 (Quetzales). However, the US Dollar is widely acceptable inside the cruise terminal and most venues visited.

TAXIS, BUSES AND OTHER TRANSPORTATION

There are several associations offering low cost transportation (in-land & water) to the public inside the cruise terminal, as well as out side. Most of these transportations lack of insurance and other reliable operation systems that may put at risk the visitors’ vacations. If guests wishes to contract a low cost transportation, we can gladly arrange it on their behalf, in order to secure a good overall experience.

ABOUT THE TOWN

San Jose is the name of the nearest town. It is basically a fisher-men village with no touristic attraction, which we do not recommend visiting. Monterico town is a famous touristic destination at just 30 Km (21 miles) away from the cruise terminal. This town offers a wide variety of natural reserves, turtles reservoirs, hotels, resorts, restaurants and pubs where guest can spend the day relaxing and enjoying the black volcanic sand beaches.

HOLIDAYS

Some destinations may be closed due a local holiday. We will try to compensate assigning another destination alike.

Due Marina Pez Vela administration, Turix operates excursions only with reservations and pre-paid tours.

The owner of the hotel is a wealthy business man in Guatemala and as hobby enjoys serving guests personally. So, in most cases, he will be the one hosting your stay, giving that special touch to your day experience. He is italian descendant and keeping the words to that, he is and excellent cook! Good wine, fine pasta with fish or shrimps are our favorite! Oh, one thing we should worn you about is that he uses thong swimming suite type. Children are under their parents supervision and responsibility, so please, keep an eye on children at all times.

Volcanic experienceIt’s a family adventure activity. The Pacaya volcano is a National Park and is relatively easy to hike. To try it out, I took my family and friends (280 people in total!) and everybody made it to the top. Some did horse-back riding, others walked. The goal was to reach the top with everyone and see the lava rivers!

PACAYA VOLCANO CLIMBINGDefinitely the most exciting and Geo-adventure tour in Guatemala.

The Pacaya volcano is one of the fewest active volcanoes in America that can be trekked and experience an up-close volcanic activity. It has 2,552 mts high. Average temperature is 15-20 Celsius and 80% humidity level.

Depending on the light exposure and other weather permitting factors, lava rivers can be close spotted. Also it is ideal for scenic photographs since from in the trail and the plateau three other volcanoes and the Guatemalan City valley can be seen, that is if clouds are not present.

From the cruise terminal the CA-9 NORTH highway is taken towards San Vicente Pacaya town and then towards the Pacaya Tourist Centre. Total transit time is 1-hour with 30 minutes. Once reached San Vicente Pacaya, a 15 minute off-road trip through coffee plantations leads to the Pacaya Tourist Centre where vehicles stops and waits till the group returns from the trekking and heads back to the cruise terminal. Each tour guide leads a group of 22 guests. Except on groups traveling in smaller vehicles (Hi-Ace or Coasters) one tour guide per vehicle is assigned.

In the Pacaya Tourist Centre restrooms for women and men and a small souvenir shop are available (no credit cards accepted, US and local currency accepted). Also, horse or mule rentals can be arranged (depending on availability). From this point a 1.2 km up hill trek is done with 3 stops on the way to take photographs, regrouping, and to catch breath. While trekking coffee and corn plantations are seen. Also cedars, bamboo, pines and other tropical vegetation is appreciated. From the tourist centre to the plateau takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. Once at the top, 1 additional hour is taken to appreciate the outstanding volcanic activity, pictures and enjoy the view. Afterwards is all down hill towards the Pacaya Tourist Centre to the assigned vehicles.

Heading back to the cruise terminal, on the CA-9 SOUTH, a stop at Sarita Restaurant is done for 1 hour to enjoy lunch and use of restrooms at guests expenses. This restaurant has A/C and is famous in Guatemala for its ice creams. We encourage guest to enjoy it! Afterwards is a 1 hour smooth ride back to the cruise terminal where the tour guide will say fair well to guests.

Guatemala Fishing has earned a worldwide reputation as THE destination for billfish fishing trip because anglers regularly have shots at 20+ Sailfish per day.

For all of the blue-water anglers, there are opportunities for Blue marlin and Black marlin as well as Tuna and Dorado. The coastline and ecosystem support vast quantities of bait year round and warm eddies hold large pods of sailfish between 2 and 50 miles from port.

Guatemala holds many official (and unofficial!) records for Pacific Sailfish including most in a day on conventional (124) and on the fly (57)...as well as most in a season… So, there is clearly no shortage of action!

Fly-fishing and conventional tackle are both accommodated on our fleet of Bertram sport-fishing boats. Our crews are full time, experienced and offer both encouragement and tuition if you wish; our only objective is for you to have a trip of a lifetime.

High quality Penn Inter-national, Okuma and Shimano conventional gear is included, flyfishing equipment is available with the first fly complimentary.

Almost everything is included in this trip! Snacks, National liquor, beer, lunch and excitement!

DESCRIPTIONOne of Turix representatives will escort you to the designated yacht, which is located right in the same cruise terminal. It is a 3-4 minute walk. He will introduce you to the captain and crew members, including the chef on-board. The yacht will depart in search for Marlins or similar fish banks. On the way some smaller fish can be caught and the chef will prepare them for you to enjoy. It is estimated to spend 8 hours in total for this tour; so it is schedule to be back at the cruise terminal by 4PM. This will give you enough time to shop, stretch and relax from the activity just done.

Santo Tomás de Castilla portWestern Caribbean (Atlantic Ocean) - (o)

GENERAL INFORMATION

Santo Tomás de Castilla, also known as Matías de Gálvez is a port city in Izabal Department, Guatemala. It is located at around 15°41′60″N, 88°37′0″W. (Coordinates: 15°41′60″N, 88°37′0″W) It lies at Amatique Bay off the Gulf of Honduras and is administratively a part of Puerto Barrios. Santo Tomás was settled originally by Belgians in the 19th century. The seaport of the city was built in 1976, after an earthquake had severely damaged the port of Puerto Barrios. Today it is among the busiest in Central America and currently expanding. [2] The port is located next to a free trade zone, the Zona de Libre Industria y Comercio Santo Tomás de Castilla, called Zolic. The port currently employs 2100 workers.

ABOUT THE PORT FACILITIES AND AMENITIES

First thing visitors should know is that since basically is a commercial port, the National authorities have tried to accommodate some basic tourist facilities in it. Ones visitors steps down the ship, on the way to the visitors center, they will be address by several individual & independent shore excursion sellers (1), offering low costs tours. Unfortunately, our experience tell us that Guatemala is a lovely country to visit, but for now, security is an issue that a tour operation company should keep as priority. Hence, we don not recommend to risk your priceless vacation time for a barging. There is a tourist visitor center which is divided in three basic areas. The first area visitors encounter is the shore excursion area, where about eight small tour operators (or travel agents) offer their service, along with an internet rental space. Visitors can locate us at the right side booths near to the bank exchange house (2). The second area is the cafeteria and show area: food & beverages, snacks and live shows are offered (3). The third area is the hand-craft market (4), where Maya textiles and other handcrafts are offered at a very good prices. The good thing is that the artisans in this market represents most of the entire handcrafts produced in Guatemala.

RESTROOMS

There are two restrooms areas inside the visitor center. The first ones are located just at the entrance to the right side. The other ones are at the rear of the hangar.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

There is a Bank (BANRURAL) in the Tour Operators area. You can find it while entering the visitors center at the right side; neighboring our booth. The exchange rate is about USD1 for Q7.50 (Quetzales). However, the US Dollar is widely acceptable inside the cruise terminal and most destination visited.

TAXIS, BUSES AND OTHER TRANSPORTATION (5)

There are several associations offering low cost transportation (in-land & water) to the public inside the cruise terminal, as well as out side. Most of these transportations lack of insurance and other reliable operation systems that may put at risk the visitors’ vacations. If guests wishes to contract a low cost transportation, we can gladly arrange it on their behalf, in order to secure a good overall experience.

ABOUT THE TOWN

Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla (a) is a small town. Basically the base economy is the port and all the activities that comes with it. The population is about 50,000 people. Puerto Barrios (b) is a nearby small city, which is the capital of the Department of Izabal (Guatemala is divided is 22 Departments or States). It’s just at 10Km (6.21 miles) or 15 minutes from the cruise terminal.

HOLIDAYS

Some destinations may be closed due a local holiday. We will try to compensate assigning another destination alike.

Please, find our shore excursion program for 2008/2009. Take in consideration that some tours are only available through reservation 5 days prior the arrival of the ship to Guatemala.

Quiriguá is an ancient Maya site in the Izabal department of Guatemala.Quiriguá is a medium sized site along the lower Motagua river, with the ceremonial center heart of the site about 1 km from the left bank of the river. The city's period of occupation seems to correspond to the length of the Maya Classic period; the site being occupied by 200, construction on the acropolis begun about 550, a great boom of grander construction beginning in the 700s with all construction evidently halting about 850. Quiriguá's boom in the 700s was no doubt tied to the military victory by Quiriguá's king Cauac Sky (also known to the Ancient Maya as"Butz Tiliw" and "K’ak’ Tiliw Chan Yo'at") over Copán in 738, when the most famous king from Copán, Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil or "18-Rabbit", was defeated, captured and then sacrificed in the grand Plaza at Quiriguá. Before thisQuiriguá was probably a vassal state of Copán, afterwards the situation was reversed. The amount of grand ceremonial architecture is perhaps rather small for a site of Quiriguá's importance, but the site remains very impressive thankslargely to its wealth of sculpture, some of the finest of ancient Mesoamerica. This includes unusually huge stelae elaborately carved from single blocks of stone, the largest being 10 meters (35 feet) tall and weighing some 60,000 kg (65 tons), the Stela E, the largest of the Maya civilization. In addition to the tall verticalstelae, the site has a number of boulders elaborately sculpted into the forms of mythological animals; these sculptures are referred to as Zoomorphs. There are also various altars and sculptures used as decoration in the facades of buildings. A few Quiriguá monuments, however, show exceptional artistry. Probably the finest of these are Stela D from 766 which has extravagant full-figure anthropomorphic versions of Maya hieroglyphics on one side, and Zoomorph P(which explorer Maudslay nicknamed The Great Turtle), from 736, which are masterpieces of Mesoamerican art. Stela C depicts the date 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahaw 8 Kumk'u (August 13, 3114 BC), the beginning of the 5th. Maya Era.

DESCRIPTIONA 11/2hrs drive to Quirigua is taken. The tour guide will explain the surroundings and general information of Guatemala. Once there, the tour guide will explain the site, the stelas and the history an importance of this Maya site. Afterwardsa brief visit to the Jade Museum is taken and some time for local shopping is given prior returning to the cruise terminal. The whole tour takes 4 1/2hrs. This is one of those excursions that have a modern and controversial topic as main stream. Guatemala, as many other Latin Countries are producing agro-alternative energy that contra-rests the constant increase in fossil energy prices, as the oil prices.

African Palm Tree plantations are commonly use to extract raw oil and refine it as vegetable oil, commonly used in most kitchens for the national and international markets.

Now-days, Bio-Diesel is a new product that can also be produced from the same African Palm Tree plantation, and is becoming very popular and currently is in a boom market stage, attracting international investors.

DESCRIPTIONIt is a great 2-hour sightseeing tour. The transportation will begin a 30 minute ride through paved road heading south from the cruise terminal. Then it will head to the African Palm Tree plantations for about 15 minutes in a grabble off-road. From this point on, everything at sight will be African Palm Trees. The tour guide will explain the plantation, growth and harvesting process.

Ones at the oil extraction plant, the transportation will slow down and from the vehicle and explanation of the extraction process is done and how 99.9% of the African Palm tree fruit is utilized. Guests are not allowed to step down the vehicle at this point, cause many of the extraction process involves extreme high temperatures.

Afterwards, the vehicle will head back to the main road, but before reaching the paved, it will stop and guests are welcome to step down the vehicle to observe the Water Buffalos work in the African Palm Trees plantation. The tour guide will explain how this farm uses these amazing and huge animals. Did you know the company that owns this farm, also has another farm where they reproduce and grow this amazing creature in Guatemala?!

After this stop, its back to the cruise terminal in a short 30 minute paved ride.

NOTES✓ Most of the tour explanation is done inside the vehicle. So

its great for those guests that have physical limitations. ✓ Business trips can be arranged for International Investors

interested in this topic.✓ For just $8/pp more, we can stop at Hibiscus

Contemporary Maya Textile museum and visit the museum and the exotic gardens.

✓ Or for just $15/pp additional, we can stop at the Iguana Sanctuary and see more than 50,000 iguanas and exotic fruits plantations
